Trail Blazers Environmental Education Intern
Trail Blazers seeks graduate students as Environmental Education Interns to assist with our yearround program, Under One Sky, which works to empower youth to become urban
environmental stewards through hands-on after school programming. Interns will help to
facilitate the implementation the program in select Central Brooklyn schools, receiving ongoing
professional development, programmatic and curriculum support from the Program Director.
About Trail Blazers
In 1887, John Ames Mitchell, editor of Life magazine, raised $800 to send 266 children from NYC
to his Life Fresh Air Farm in Branchville, CT. The program evolved into present day Trail Blazers,
moving to 1100 forested acres in Sussex County, NJ currently owned by the Nature Conservancy,
and continues the mission of providing outdoor adventure-based experiences where youth learn
lessons and skills for life. Trail Blazers remains the nation's second oldest American Camp
Association-accredited program, and the first to offer environmental education.
Trail Blazers Environmental Education Intern should:

Be enrolled in a graduate program studying Education, Science, Psychology, Sustainability,
Environmental Studies, or related field.

Have experience with and a passion for education, working with elementary school children,
community development projects and/or environmental justice.

Have interest in working with children, teachers, and community members in an educational
capacity to build sustainable communities.

Have confidence, flexibility and comfort working with at-risk youth in urban environments.

Have a passion for innovative approaches that encourage sustainable habits and civic
engagement in children, including interactive games, art and science activities, gardening
and project-based learning.

Have availability 1 to 3 days a week (3 to 9 hours per week during after school hours) during
the fall 2015 and spring 2016 semesters (mid-September to mid- June)
Trail Blazers Environmental Education Intern will:

Assist the Program Director with program planning and execution.

Gain experience in the classroom teaching environmental education lessons in an after
school program with elementary aged students in Brooklyn.

Assist in curriculum development and editing.

Provide consistent leadership and act as role models and mentors to younger students.

Be eligible to receive course credit, if applicable.
Program Stipend: $500-$1,500 per semester, depending on teaching commitment
