Food Rule: anything ending in bar is properly not good for you..
Statement: My food rule is “anything ending in bar is properly not good for you.” This is an
example of “what kind of food you should eat.” This rule advises shoppers to be wary of
products that try to replace meals, pretending to be a meal. This rule agrees with multiple
rules from Michael Pollan’s food rules, more importantly rules 19, 55 and also 56. Rule 55
says that you should always eat your meals; don’t skip on meals at all for any reason. Rule
55 also says not to snack a lot. While rule 19 tells us to eat food made of plants not
processed food like these “bars.” DGA 2010 chapter 3 states that you should replace all the
bad things like sugar, saturated fats and anything that is claiming to be healthy with stuff
that is actually good for you like plants and earth grown products. That was the closest I
could get to my food rule. My food rule helps UNT students make healthier choices when it
comes to skipping meals and eating a “bar” to replace missing a meal and thinking its ok to
do. Every morning I walk around campus and see at least 5 or 6 students eating one of the
terrible bars they shouldn’t be eating looking for energy or to fill them up. I graded my food
rule as STRONG. Pollan makes a strong argument against skipping meals and replacing it
with processed foods.
