The primary goal of this one day training is to assist
mainstream teachers and teachers of English as a second
language in developing lessons and implementing
instructional practices that align with the Common Core
to meet the needs of both ELLs and mainstream students.
The training is aligned with the EQUIP rubric, which
is a tool that is used nationwide to evaluate the quality
of instructional materials designed to help students meet
the Common Core. The training will focus on four key areas
targeted by the rubric: alignment to the letter and spirit
of the CCSS, three key shifts in instruction, responsiveness
to varied student learning needs, and regular assessment
to determine if students are mastering standards-based
content and skills. During the training the presenter will
focus on how to teach ELLs so they are able to meet the
Common Core Standards. She will model research-based
practices in each of the four key areas and will provide
participants with opportunities to work together to apply
what they have learned. Participants will receive a 5 hour
professional development certificate.

This day-long institute will provide teachers of grades
K-5 and administrators (general education, literacy, and
bilingual/ESL) with strategies for differentiating the
Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) in language
arts instruction and assessment for ELLs and emergent
bilinguals who are at different levels in the new and home
language progressions. Participants will be introduced to
a series of guiding questions that they will be able to use
to execute their CCSS-aligned unit and lesson planning in
English or in bilingual contexts. The presenter will model
the use of these questions by drawing on a sample unit
from Expeditionary Learning, using a sample from the New
and Home language Arts Progressions for four emergent
bilinguals. Participants will apply what they have learned
in a close reading activity. The session will conclude with
an exploration of how ESL, English language arts, Spanish
language arts and LOTE teachers can collaborate to enrich
students’ opportunities to learn. Participants will receive a
5 hour professional development certificate.
