The upper extremities and back were involved in almost 1-half of all occupational injuries and illnesses. Injuries to the upper extremities, which accounted for 23 percent of all days away from work cases, were largely cuts, lacerations, and punctures; back injuries were most commonly sprains and strains. The most frequently injured part of the body was the back. These cases had a median 7 days away from work, the same as the median for all injuries and illnesses. 25.0% 23.1% 22.4% 21.4% 20.0% 15.0% 13.1% 10.0% 10.0% 5.0% 3.6% 2.9% 1.7% 1.1% 0.7% 0.0% Upper Back extremities Lower Trunk, extremities except back Multiple parts Head, except eye Eye Neck Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, November 2005 Body All other systems
