In 2004, injury and illness rates ranged from 1.9 cases per 100 full-time workers for small establishments to 5.9 cases per 100 full-time workers for midsize establishments. Nationwide, injury and illness incidence rates in 2004 generally were higher for midsize establishments employing 50 to 249 workers than for smaller or larger establishments, although this pattern did not hold for all industries. While incidence rates remained relatively unchanged for establishments employing fewer than 250 workers, the rates for establishments with 250 to 999 workers and 1,000 or more workers both declined in 2004, to 5.4 cases per 100 full-time workers, down from 5.8 and 5.7 cases per 100 workers, respectively, in 2003. 8 Incidence rates per 100 full-time workers 2003 2004 6.2 6 All establishments, 2004 = 4.8 5.9 5.8 5.7 5.4 4.3 5.4 4.2 4 2 2.0 1.9 0 1–10 11–49 50–249 250–999 Employment size class Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, November 2005 1,000 or more
