Down to the Wire
Liberty has trailed with two outs in the seventh inning during each of its last three wins.
Most recently, Hanna Nichols tied the score at 8-8 with a two-out double on Saturday
against CSU. Jenny Law then registered a walk-off single in the eighth, winning the game
for Liberty for the second Saturday in a row.
Law cashed in with a walk-off, two-run single in a 4-3 win over Winthrop, March 31.
She drove in Megan Robinson and Marybeth Sciolino with the winning runs.
Previously, Amber Donovan belted a three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning,
March 25 at Gardner-Webb, clinching the 7-5 win and series sweep of the Runnin’ Bulldogs. Donovan faced a 1-2 count with two outs, as Liberty was down to its last strike.
Go the Distance
Chandler Ball fashioned three straight complete games against Charleston Southern
this past weekend, pitching all 22 innings. She tossed a three-hitter on Friday against the
Buccaneers, and registered an eight-inning win on Saturday.
She is the second Lady Flames pitcher this season to have pitched three complete
games in a row. Alyssa DiMartino tossed three straight complete games, March 28-30.
The last time that two Lady Flames pitchers both tossed three or more consecutive
complete games during the same year was 2009. Sarah Ellis recorded four straight CGs
from April 4-8, and Tiffani Smith went the distance three times in a row, March 7-9.
Clear the Bases
Kelly Strickland tied Saturday’s game against Charleston Southern with a grand slam
in the bottom of the sixth inning. It marked the fifth grand slam of Strickland’s career, and
the first by a Lady Flame this season. It also helped spur Liberty to a 9-8 come-frombehind win. Strickland has hit each of Liberty’s last three grand slams.
Meredith Crisante is the only other active Lady Flame with a grand slam in her career,
hitting a four-RBI homer in a 16-3 win over Hampton on April 19, 2011.
Since 2001, Jessica Moore has hit the most grand slams by a Lady Flame, with
seven.
200 Club
Three Liberty seniors appeared in their 200th career softball game during this past
week. Kelly Strickland made her 200th career appearance on Wednesday against UNCG,
while Kaylee West’s 200th game was the series opener against Charleston Southern,
Friday. Jenny Law ended her 200th career contest with a walk-off single on Saturday.
On Saturday against CSU, Strickland’s name appeared in the starting lineup for the
200th time. She is the 12th Lady Flame since 1994 to make 200 career starts. West is not
far behind, having started 198 games, and Law is at 184.
Hit Parade
Liberty is 9-0 this season when registering 10 or more hits, recording 10+ base hits
during each of its first eight victories of 2012. The Lady Flames then had nine hits in a 7-5
win over Gardner-Webb, March 25, to break the trend. Liberty’s 10th hit against Charleston Southern on Saturday sealed the Lady Flames’ 9-8 victory in the eighth inning.
Moving on Up
Meredith Crisante hit her 18th career home run on Saturday against Charleston
Southern, passing current Liberty Associate Athletics Director Meredith (Hollyfield) Eaker
for 11th place on the Lady Flames’ career home run list.

Extra, Extra
Liberty posted its first extra-inning win of the season on Saturday, defeating Charleston Southern, 9-8 in eight innings. Before that game, the Lady Flames’ most recent extrainnings win came April 16, 2011, when Liberty beat Gardner-Webb, 11-8, in eight innnings.
Each of Liberty’s last six extra-innings victories has gone eight innings. The last time
the Lady Flames won a game of nine innings or longer was April 29, 2008, a 5-4 win over
Gardner-Webb that took nine stanzas to decide.
What a Comeback!
The Lady Flames battled back from a 12-2 deficit during a 14-13 victory over East
Tennessee State, March 6. Liberty scored 10 runs on 11 hits in the bottom of the fourth to
tie the game at 12-all, and won on a sixth-inning sacrifice fly by Hanna Nichols.
Liberty’s 14-13 win over East Tennessee State:
- Marked the largest deficit overcome in Liberty’s NCAA Division I softball history.
- Was the first game ever played under lights at Liberty Softball Field.
- Saw the Lady Flames post a 10-run inning for the first time since April 1, 2006.
- Included a Liberty Softball Field-record 18 base hits by the Lady Flames.
First Things First
Marybeth Sciolino started made her first career start on April 4, and drew a walk during her first time to the plate. She is the fifth current Lady Flame to reach base on her
first career plate appearance. Grace Nordan hit a home run during her first time to bat in
a Liberty uniform. Kelby Allen and Jill Stephens both singled in their first at bat as a Lady
Flame. Bridgett Woods drew a walk during her first career plate appearance.

That’s a Record
Amber Donovan tied an NCAA Division I single-game record with three doubles on
Feb. 24 versus Savannah State. Six Lady Flames have a three-double game to their
credit, most recently Jessica Moore versus Bethune-Cookman, April 3, 2006.
Donovan also tied a program record with four hits during that contest, making her the
third Lady Flame with a four-hit game so far this season (Katie Zavodny and Kaylee West,
Feb. 11 vs. N.C. Central). The only other time in program history that three Liberty players
had a four-hit game in the same year was 2000.
Championship Memories
Liberty entered the 2011 Big South Softball Championship as the No. 2 seed. After falling to Winthrop in the opening round, the Lady Flames won four straight games,
capped by a 3-1 win over top-seeded Radford in the final to claim its first title since 2002.
The Lady Flames posted a 0.80 team ERA during the tournament, earning a pair of
shutouts. Tiffani Smith earned Tournament MVP honors after throwing a no-hitter against
host Winthrop, May 13.
Sammi Shivock hit two game-winning home runs, one against Gardner-Webb and
another in the final against Radford. Meredith Crisante went yard twice on May 13 at Winthrop. Both Shivock and Crisante both earned All-Tournament honors.
Liberty qualified for the NCAA Softball Championship Knoxville Regional, where the
Lady Flames faced No. 5 Tennessee and No. 19 Georgia Tech. The team led Georgia
Tech, 2-1, going into the bottom of the fifth inning on May 21, before the Yellow Jackets
rallied to down Liberty, 4-3.
All-American
Kelly Strickland made history for the Lady Flames last season, as she became Liberty’s first softball All-American by being named to the Easton Fastpitch All-America squad.
