Season Opening
Liberty is 12-13-1 all-time in softball season openers, including a 10-7-1 mark in the
NCAA Division I era. The Lady Flames have faced 25 different opponents in their 26 season openers. The only team that Liberty has opened two seasons against is Hampton,
who the Lady Flames defeated to open the 1997 and 1998 seasons.
The Lady Flames have gone 0-3-1 in their last four season openers, with their last
season-opening win coming Feb. 17, 2007, a 5-3 victory over Appalachian State. A 2-2 tie
against Tennessee Tech, the second tie in program history, led off the 2008 season.
This will be the 11th time since 1994 that the Lady Flames has begun a season in the
state of North Carolina, more times than in any other state. Liberty opened each year, from
1999-2007, in North Carolina. The Lady Flames are 6-4 in season openers held in North
Carolina.
500th Win
Liberty head coach Paul Wetmore became the first Liberty coach to reach 500 victories, in any sport, thanks to a 7-1 win over Norfolk State April 20, 2011. Wetmore, in his
19th season, is the third Big South softball coach to amass 500 career wins.
Coach Wetmore has been at the helm ever since 1994, when the program restarted
after a seven year layoff. He has led the Lady Flames to nine 30-win seasons, six appearances in the conference championship game, two Big South titles, and two appearances
in the NCAA Regionals.
Championship Memories
Liberty entered the 2011 Big South Softball Championship as the No. 2 seed. After falling to Winthrop in the opening round, the Lady Flames won four straight games,
capped by a 3-1 win over top-seeded Radford in the title contest to claim its first title since
2002.
The Lady Flames posted a 0.80 team ERA during the tournament, earning a pair of
shutouts. Tiffani Smith earned Tournament MVP honors after throwing a no-hitter against
host Winthrop, May 13.
Sammi Shivock hit two game-winning home runs, one against Gardner-Webb and
another in the final against Radford. Meredith Crisante went yard twice on May 13 at Winthrop. Both Shivock and Crisante both earned All-Tournament honors.
Liberty qualified for the NCAA Softball Championship Knoxville Regional, where the
Lady Flames faced No. 5 Tennessee and No. 19 Georgia Tech. The team led Georgia
Tech, 2-1, going into the bottom of the fifth inning on May 21, before the Yellow Jackets
rallied to down Liberty, 4-3.
Comeback Kids
Liberty dealt with adversity well in 2011. After dropping its first conference tournament
contest, the Lady Flames won four straight elimination games to claim the championship.
Earlier in the season, on April 16, Liberty trailed Gardner-Webb, 8-1, with two outs and
nobody on in the top of the seventh inning. The Lady Flames scored seven runs to tie the
game and then won, 11-8, with three tallies in the eighth inning.
Honors for Lady Flames
A total of nine Lady Flames were honored by the Big South with postseason awards,
setting a new program record. After Liberty tied a program record, set in 2010, with six
all-conference players, three additional Lady Flames made the all-tournament squad in
2011.
Six Lady Flames earned all-conference honors. Keely McMillon and Ashley Bensinger
were named to the all-conference first team, while Kelly Strickland, Amber DePasquale,
Katrina Johnson and Kaylee West earned second team honors.
In addition, Strickland was named the 2011 Big South Co-Player of the Year, along
with Radford’s Nichole Beall. She became the fourth player in Liberty history to win the
award, and the first since Jessica Moore took the honor in 2005 and 2007.
Meredith Crisante, Sammi Shivock and Johnson were named to the Big South Championship All-Tournament Team, while Tiffani Smith earned tournament MVP honors.

Preseason Postings
Liberty has been predicted to finish second in the Big South Preseason Softball
Coaches Poll, behind Radford. This marks the second season in a row that the Lady
Flames were chosen to finish second in the conference.
2012 Big South Softball Preseason Poll
Team (First-place votes)
1. Radford (6)
2. Liberty
3. Charleston Southern (1)
4. Campbell
5. Coastal Carolina
6. Gardner-Webb
7. Winthrop (1)
8. Presbyterian College
Conference Leading
Liberty led the Big South in eight offensive categories as a team, including batting average (.281), slugging percentage (.432), runs scored (289), hits (462), RBIs (266), home
runs (61), total bases (711) and sacrifice flies (14).
Additionally, the Lady Flames had three league leaders in individual categories. Kelly
Strickland led the Big South with 16 home runs and tied for the lead with 47 RBIs. Ashley
Bensinger scored 42 runs to lead all conference players.
On a Roll
Liberty seemed to get better as the game went along in 2011. For the year, the Lady
Flames outscored opponents 53-43 in the fifth inning, 51-22 in the sixth and 37-9 in the
seventh. All told, Liberty outscored opponents, 92-38, from the sixth inning on.
Going Yard
Liberty continued to show its strength this past season, hitting 61 home runs. Over
the past two seasons, the Lady Flames have hit 113 home runs in 117 games played, an
average of nearly one home run per game.
On April 19, Liberty tied a program record by hitting six home runs on the way to a
16-3 victory over Hampton. Kelly Strickland hit two homers, while Sammi Shivock, Ashley
Bensinger, Meredith Crisante and Amber DePasquale all hit homers as well.
All-American
Kelly Strickland made history for the Lady Flames last season, as she became Liberty’s first softball All-American by being named to the Easton Fastpitch All-America squad.
Strickland and Ashley Bensinger were named to the NFCA Lousiville Slugger All MidAtlantic Region team, becoming the first Liberty softball teammates to earn all-region
honors in the same season.
For Starters
Kelly Strickland has started 166 consecutive games, a streak that dates back to her
freshman campaign. The last Lady Flame to make 175 consecutive starts was Ashley Williams, who did so from 2005-2008.
The program record for most starts in a row is 248, as Beth Bennett drew the nod in
all of Liberty’s games from 2006-2009. Lauren Hahn, with 237 consecutive starts from
2001-2004, is the only other Lady Flame with 200 or more in a row.
Jenny Law has made 123 straight starts, including the last 117 contests in right field.
Kaylee West has made 117 consecutive starts at first base.
Back for More
Six starters return from last year’s Big South championship team. Aside from five
seniors, the team features 14 freshmen and sophomores. A total of six returning sophomores earned postseason playing time last season. Sammi Shivock and Katie Zavodny
both started each of Liberty’s two NCAA tournament contests.
