Out With a Bang
The Lady Flames sent their seniors out in style with a 14-6 win over Longwood on
Senior Day, Saturday. Liberty hit three home runs, with senior Bridgett Woods connecting
for a grand slam and freshman Kelby Allen hitting two homers and driving in four runs. Grace Nordan pitched the first three innings to earn her first career victory.
Four out of the five seniors registered at least one hit in their last game at Liberty
Softball Field.
Prior to Saturday, no Lady Flame had done the following during a regular-season finale: hit a grand slam; hit two homers; or earned their first career pitching victory. All three
were attained against Longwood, by Woods, Allen and Nordan, respectively.
Power Surge
Last season, the Lady Flames hit 61 home runs in 60 games, averaging slightly over
one homer per game.
Liberty has surged during the second half this year, hitting 27 homers in the last 26
games of the regular season to give the Lady Flames 43 round trippers in 2012. Meredith
Crisante has hit seven of her team-high nine homers in the second half. During the past
10 games, the Lady Flames have hit 13 home runs.
Turn of Fortune
Sophomore Grace Nordan started this season as the Lady Flames’ leadoff batter,
getting Liberty’s first hit of the year on Feb. 10 at Elon. She has had other highlights at the
plate, including a go-ahead two-run single at Coastal Carolina, April 15.
Nordan had pitched 9 1/3 innings, mostly in relief, over the past two seasons, prior to
last week, where she went 9 1/3 innings over two starts in the circle. She tossed a complete game in a 4-3 setback at Virginia Tech on May 1, and was the starting pitcher in the
regular-season finale, a 14-6 win over Longwood.
For Starters
Meredith Crisante, Jenny Law and Kaylee West have all started every game this year.
Law has made 177 consecutive starts, dating back to May 7, 2009. Kelly Strickland
started 170 games in a row before missing the USC Upstate Tournament. West has drawn
starting assignments for each of the last 170 games, beginning with the 2010 season
opener.
Two Lady Flames since 1994 have made more than 175 starts in a row. Beth Bennett
started all 248 games of her career, while Lauren Hahn made 237 consecutive starts.
200 Club
On April 7 against Charleston Southern, Kelly Strickland’s name appeared in the starting lineup for the 200th time. She is the 12th Lady Flame since 1994 to make 200 career
starts. Kaylee West then made her 200th career start on April 10 against North Carolina
A&T. Jenny Law’s 200th start came on May 1 at Virginia Tech. This is the first year that
three Lady Flames have made their 200th career start during the same season.
Freshman Feats
Amber Donovan hit her team-leading 10th double of the season, April 20 at Presbyterian College. She is the first Lady Flame to hit 10 or more doubles as a freshman since
Ashley Williams had 11 in 2005.
Chandler Ball struck out eight Presbyterian College batters on April 21, and now has
109 strikeouts this season. She is the first Liberty freshman pitcher with 100 or more
strikeouts since Sarah Swor in 2004.

Conference Recap
The Lady Flames finished with a 9-12 record in Big South play this season, and exhibited extra-base power throughout the conference schedule. Liberty hit 28 doubles and
added 20 homers and one triple during conference play, meaning one-third of the team’s
147 hits during Big South games went for extra bases.
Liberty went 6-5 in conference away games this season, sweeping Gardner-Webb
and taking two of three at Presbyterian College. Over the past two seasons, the Lady
Flames are 13-8 in Big South road contests.
Sammi Shivock batted .367 with four doubles, four homers, 16 RBIs and 13 runs
scored in league games. Meredith Crisante hit .294 in conference play, with a .647 slugging percentage, as she hit six doubles and six homers while driving in 18 runs. Jenny
Law hit .318 against conference competition, and Kelly Strickland hit three homers.
That’s a Wrap
The Lady Flames won four Big South series finales in dramatic fashion this season.
Liberty downed Coastal Carolina, 4-2, on April 15. Sammi Shivock hit the game-winner, a two-RBI double in the seventh, while Chandler Ball pitched a four-hitter.
On April 7, the Lady Flames erased two four-run deficits against Charleston Southern,
tying the game on a Kelly Strickland grand slam in the sixth. Jenny Law registered a walkoff single in the eighth, winning the game for Liberty, 9-8.
The previous Saturday, March 31, saw Liberty rally from a 3-2 deficit with two outs in
the seventh, as Law came through with a walk-off single for a 4-3 win over Winthrop.
On March 25, Amber Donovan hit a two-out, three-run homer in the top of the seventh
inning to down Gardner-Webb, 7-5, in the series finale.
Extra, Extra
Liberty posted its first extra-inning win of the season on April 7, defeating Charleston
Southern, 9-8 in eight innings. Before that game, the Lady Flames’ most recent extrainnings win came April 16, 2011, when Liberty beat Gardner-Webb, 11-8, in eight innings.
Each of Liberty’s last six extra-inning victories has gone eight innings. The last time
the Lady Flames won a game of nine innings or longer was April 29, 2008, a 5-4 win over
Gardner-Webb that took nine stanzas to decide.
What a Comeback!
The Lady Flames battled back from a 12-2 deficit during a 14-13 victory over East
Tennessee State, March 6. Liberty scored 10 runs on 11 hits in the bottom of the fourth to
tie the game at 12-all, and won on a sixth-inning sacrifice fly by Hanna Nichols.
.Liberty’s 14-13 win over East Tennessee State:
- Marked the largest deficit overcome in Liberty’s NCAA Division I softball history.
- Was the first game ever played under lights at Liberty Softball Field.
- Saw the Lady Flames post a 10-run inning for the first time since April 1, 2006.
- Included a Liberty Softball Field-record 18 base hits by the Lady Flames.
- Tied Liberty’s season high with 14 runs scored.

Liberty in the Big South Softball Championship By the Numbers
0 - Tiffani Smith pitched a no-hitter against host Winthrop, May 13, 2011, Liberty’s first no-hitter in conference tournament
play.
1 - The Lady Flames earned the No. 1 seed in the Big South Championship in 1999, 2000 and 2007 by virtue of winning the
conference regular-season title in each of those seasons.
2 - Liberty won its second Big South Softball Championship title in 2011, competing as the No. 2 seed. The team’s first conference tournament title came in 2002, as the fifth-seeded team.
3 - Three Lady Flames, all pitchers, have earned Big South Tournament MVP. Katie Phillips was named Co-MVP in 1998,
while Ali Thompson and Tiffani Smith won in 2002 and 2011, respectively.
3a - Liberty has competed in the final round of the Big South Softball Championship in three out of the last four seasons 2008, 2009 and 2011.
4 - Combined runs scored by Liberty in its two championship-winning games. The Lady Flames won the title, 1-0, on May
12, 2002, and downed Radford, 3-1, in the final on May 14, 2011. Both of Liberty’s Big South tournament titles have come
in Rock Hill, S.C.
4th - Inning in which the Lady Flames scored the eventual winning runs in Liberty’s 2011 title-game victory over Radford.
Sammi Shivock hit a solo homer, and Jenny Law hit an RBI single, extending the lead from 1-0 to 3-0.
5 - Number of current Lady Flames (Meredith Crisante, Jenny Law, Sammi Shivock, Kaylee West, Katie Zavodny) who recorded a base hit during the 2011 conference title game.
6 - Liberty’s seed for the 2012 Big South Softball Championship. The last No. 6 seed to win the Big South Softball Championship was Texas A&M Corpus Christi, which beat No. 1 seed Coastal Carolina twice on May 10, 2003 to win the title. The
only other time a No. 6 seed has qualified for the Big South final was 1994, when No. 6 UMBC fell to No. 3 UNC Greensboro.
7 - Total number of runs allowed in five games by the Lady Flames during 2011 Big South Softball Championship. Only four
of those runs were earned, good for a 0.80 ERA. Liberty also allowed only four earned runs during their conference tournament championship run in 2002.
8 - Number of current Lady Flames who have started at least one conference tournament contest during their career.
9 - Position at which Jenny Law has started each of the last 170 games. Law and Strickland are the only current Lady
Flames to start in all of the team’s 15 conference postseason games over the last three seasons.
10 - The Lady Flames have posted a 10-5 record over the last three Big South Softball Championships. The most conference tournament victories that Liberty softball has had over a four-year span is 13, from 2008-2011. The conference record
for Big South tournament victories over the course of four seasons is 18, when UNC Greensboro won four straight titles,
1994-97.
36 - Number of conference tournament victories for the Lady Flames since entering the Big South in 1994, an average of
two per season. During that time frame, Liberty has posted more wins in the Big South Softball Championship than any other
league school besides Coastal Carolina, which has 38 conference tournament victories since 1994.
527 and Counting
Liberty softball head coach Paul Wetmore is the winningest head coach in Liberty history, with 527 coaching victories.
The Lady Flames’ head coach since the program was reinstated in 1994 following a seven-year absence, Wetmore has
coached every game that Liberty softball has played at the Division I level. He is the third Big South softball coach to reach
500 victories, joining current Winthrop head coach Mark Cooke and former Coastal Carolina head coach Jess Dannelly.
Championship Memories
Liberty entered the 2011 Big South Softball Championship in Rock Hill, S.C., as the No. 2 seed. After falling to host
Winthrop in the opening round, the Lady Flames won four straight games, capped by a 3-1 win over top-seeded Radford
in the final to claim its first title since 2002.
The Lady Flames posted a 0.80 team ERA during the tournament, earning a pair of shutouts. Tiffani Smith earned
Tournament MVP honors after throwing a no-hitter against host Winthrop, May 13.
Sammi Shivock hit two game-winning home runs, one against Gardner-Webb and another in the final against Radford. Meredith Crisante went yard twice on May 13 at Winthrop. Crisante, Shivock and Katrina Johnson all earned AllTournament honors.
Liberty qualified for the NCAA Softball Championship Knoxville Regional, where the Lady Flames faced No. 5 Tennessee and No. 19 Georgia Tech. The team led Georgia Tech, 2-1, going into the bottom of the fifth inning on May 21, before
the Yellow Jackets rallied to down Liberty, 4-3.
