Week to Date
The Lady Flames traveled to Charlottesville on Wednesday to face Virginia of the
ACC.
During game one, Liberty took a 4-3 lead by scoring three runs in the top of the fourth
inning on a Kelly Strickland homer and a two-RBI single by Kelby Allen. The Cavaliers
responded with a three-run fourth of their own to regain the lead on the way to a 6-5 win.
Liberty trimmed an early deficit to three, 4-1, on a sacrifice fly by Kaylee West in the
fifth inning in game two. Virginia went on to win, 7-1, behind the strong pitching of ace
Melanie Mitchell. Jill Stephens went 2-for-2 for the Lady Flames in the nightcap.
Going Yard
Kelly Strickland and Bridgett Woods both hit home runs at Virginia on Wednesday.
Both players have hit five home runs this season, tying Sammi Shivock for second on the
team behind Meredith Crisante’s eight homers.
Strickland connected for the 44th home run of her career on Wednesday, tying her for
second all-time at Liberty with Ashley Williams (2005-08). With 145 RBIs, she is now four
shy of second place, held by Shannon Tanski (1995-97)
For Starters
Meredith Crisante, Jenny Law and Kaylee West have all started every game this year.
Law has made 170 consecutive starts, dating to May 7, 2009. Kelly Strickland started
170 games in a row before missing the USC Upstate Tournament. West has drawn starting assignments for each of the last 163 games, beginning with the 2010 season opener.
Ashley Williams is the last Liberty player to make 175 starts in a row, doing so from
the 2005 through 2008 seasons.
Weekend Wrapup
The Lady Flames downed Presbyterian College twice on April 20, 3-1 and 4-1, and
won the series, two games to one.
In game one, Chandler Ball yielded just three hits. Liberty scored three runs in the
second inning, on an RBI single from Hanna Nichols and a homer by Kelly Strickland.
Game two saw Alyssa DiMartino scatter seven hits, striking out four. Sammi Shivock
doubled and hit a two-run homer, while Meredith Crisante hit a two-run blast of her own.
On April 21, Shivock slugged a three-run homer to give the Lady Flames a 3-2 lead
after three innings, but the Blue Hose rallied for the 4-3 victory.
1,100/1,400 and Counting
Head Coach Paul Wetmore will coach his 1,100th career game on Friday. Friday’s
contest will also be the 1,400th game in program history. Coach Wetmore has led the
Lady Flames ever since 1994, when the program restarted after a seven-year absence.
He has coached all but 300 Liberty softball contests all-time.
The winningest head coach in Liberty history, Wetmore became the third Big South
softball coach all-time to win 500 games, April 20, 2011 against Norfolk State.
Moving on Up
Meredith Crisante hit her 22nd career home run on April 20 at Presbyterian College,
and is tied with Dawn Jeffs (2006-07) for eighth place in program history. She stole her
39th career base, April 21, tying her for fourth all-time at Liberty.
Kaylee West, the program’s career leader in sacrifice flies, registered the eighth sac
fly of her career on Wednesday at Virginia. She is also ranked seventh on the career list
with 36 doubles, and is in eighth place with 94 career RBIs.
Freshman Feats
Amber Donovan hit her team-leading 10th double of the season, April 20 at Presbyterian College. She is the first Lady Flame to hit 10 or more doubles as a freshman since
Ashley Williams had 11 in 2005.
Chandler Ball struck out eight Presbyterian College batters on April 21, and now has
105 strikeouts this season. She is the first Liberty freshman pitcher since with 100 or more
strikeouts since Sarah Swor in 2004.

That’s a Wrap
The Lady Flames are 4-2 in conference series finales this season, and each win has
been secured in the seventh inning or later.
Most recently, Liberty downed Coastal Carolina, 4-2, on April 15. Grace Nordan hit a
go-ahead two-run single in the sixth inning. Sammi Shivock hit the game-winner, a twoRBI double in the seventh inning. Chandler Ball pitched a four-hitter to seal the victory.
On April 7, the Lady Flames erased two four-run deficits against Charleston Southern,
tying the game on a Kelly Strickland grand slam in the sixth. Jenny Law registered a walkoff single in the eighth, winning the game for Liberty, 9-8.
The previous Saturday, March 31, saw Liberty rally from a 3-2 deficit with two outs in
the seventh inning, as Law came through with a walk-off single for a 4-3 win.
Extra, Extra
Liberty posted its first extra-inning win of the season on April 7, defeating Charleston
Southern, 9-8 in eight innings. Before that game, the Lady Flames’ most recent extrainnings win came April 16, 2011, when Liberty beat Gardner-Webb, 11-8, in eight innings.
Each of Liberty’s last six extra-inning victories has gone eight innings. The last time
the Lady Flames won a game of nine innings or longer was April 29, 2008, a 5-4 win over
Gardner-Webb that took nine stanzas to decide.
What a Comeback!
The Lady Flames battled back from a 12-2 deficit during a 14-13 victory over East
Tennessee State, March 6. Liberty scored 10 runs on 11 hits in the bottom of the fourth to
tie the game at 12-all, and won on a sixth-inning sacrifice fly by Hanna Nichols.
.Liberty’s 14-13 win over East Tennessee State:
.- Marked the largest deficit overcome in Liberty’s NCAA Division I softball history.
- Was the first game ever played under lights at Liberty Softball Field.
- Saw the Lady Flames post a 10-run inning for the first time since April 1, 2006.
- Included a Liberty Softball Field-record 18 base hits by the Lady Flames.
