Mountain-Plains: Price Movements of Top Exports and Other Highlights May 2017 www.bls.gov/mxp Total exports for the Mountain-Plains region, which consists of Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming, were approximately $46.2 billion in 2016, decreasing 4.2 percent from 2015. Over the 3-month period ended in April, export prices for transportation equipment, the export industry having the largest share of exports by dollar value for the region, increased 0.5 percent. Over the same period, the export price indexes for chemicals, food, and primary metals also advanced. Top Six Mountain-Plains Region Exports by Trade Dollar Value, 2016 The Mountain-Plains region’s largest export in 2016 was transportation equipment manufacturing ($7.9 billion), representing 17.2 percent of the total export trade dollar value for the region. The second largest export for the region by trade value was chemicals with over $6.1 billion in trade dollar value. The top six export industries for the Mountain-Plains region accounted for just under 73.8 percent ($34.1 billion) of the region’s total exports. U.S. Export Price Indexes: Transportation Equipment Manufacturing Export prices for transportation equipment and all manufacturing each increased 0.5 percent over the 3-month period ended in April. The price index for transportation equipment advanced 1.9 percent over the past year. The increase in export transportation prices over the 12-month period was driven by higher aerospace product and parts prices, especially in January. Import/Export Price Indexes (MXP) and Mountain-Plains Highlights www.bls.gov/mxp U.S. Export Price Indexes: Chemical Manufacturing Export prices for chemicals rose 0.6 percent over the 3 months ended in April. Higher prices for basic chemicals as well as resin, synthetic rubber, and artificial synthetic fibers and filaments drove the 3-month increase. Nonetheless, export chemical prices rec- orded a 0.6-percent over-the-year decline from April 2015 to April 2016. U.S. Export Price Indexes: Food Manufacturing The price index for food exports rose 1.0 percent over the 3-month period ended in April. Higher animal slaughtering and processing prices contributed to the 3-month increase in the price index for food. Over the past year, export prices for food manufacturing increased 4.6 percent.
