SCHOOL OF EDUCATION STANDARDS Professionalism & Leadership Candidates work collaboratively with one another, participate in professional endeavors, advocate for educational initiatives that improve student learning, and demonstrate high ethical standards. Content Knowledge Candidates have an understanding of their content areas and professional specialty areas; they promote global awareness and relevancy to the subjects they teach, and they seek to incorporate 21st century skills in their teaching. Middle Birth- Kindergarten Exceptional Children Reflection Candidates think critically about all aspects of their education and their classroom; they actively investigate and consider new ideas to improve upon teaching and learning. Secondary/K12 Elementary Diversity Candidates nurture relationships, embrace diversity, maintain high expectations, engage all students, and communicate and collaborate with families and communities. Pedagogy & Professional Skills Candidates know how students think and learn and can differentiate instruction accordingly; they collaborate, use data for decisionmaking, use a wide-range of methods, utilize technology for collaboration and creation, and help students work in teams to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Professional Education Dispositions 1. To be accepting of others from diverse backgrounds (diverse including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, special needs, tolerance of minority beliefs, and non-native speakers) 2. To be proactive and take initiative (by focusing on developing problem solving and critical thinking skills necessary to recognize and act upon areas in need of change, and controversial issues related to education) 3. To be collaborative and collegial practitioners (by developing skills in how to work together as professionals to achieve professional goals) 4. To be proactive in maintaining a professional understanding of current issues and trends in education (introduction to professional organizations at both the state and national levels and how membership can promote professionalism beyond the degree and initial licensure)
