ATC Rotaract members busy raising funds for
charities
Members of the Rotaract chapter at Athens Technical College
recently raised nearly $1,500 for charitable causes including the Athens
Rotary Club’s inaugural Plungefest, in which Rotaract members
participated. Rotaract, sponsored by the Athens Rotary Club, is a service
club for young men and women aged 18-30.
During the Christmas holidays, Rotaract members raised $309.45
for the local Salvation Army by ringing the bell at one of the Salvation
Army collection kettles on Dec. 3.
The ATC chapter also raised more than $1,000 for the Athens
Rotary Club’s first ever Plungefest that was held Saturday, Feb. 4 at
Sandy Creek Park. Members of the Rotaract Club also won several prizes
in the Plungefest for their fundraising.
Rotaract adviser Kala Jones won a $50 gift certificate for raising
the most money for the youngest plunger; the Rotaract team won a $100
gift certificate for having the most plungers and volunteers of any group;
and ATC student Anzio Gartrell, as Rotaract president, won a $100 gift
certificate from downtown Athens vendors for raising the most money of
any individual.
The Rotaract Plungefest team comprised student member plunge

participants Anzio Gartrell, Nathanial Whitney and Eva Rholetter
and advisor Kala Jones; student chicken dip participant Shawn Moore;
and volunteers Chief Magistrate Judge Patricia Barron, Thomas McNair,
Jeri Lynn Whitney, Jennifer Ciarochi, Jane Brown and Mac Brown.
By raising at least $1,000, the Athens Technical College Rotaract
Club has covered the entire cost of a ShelterBox from ShelterBox USA,
sponsored by Rotary Clubs and other civic organizations around the
world. The ShelterBox (http://www.shelterbox.org/about.php?page=9) is
a disaster relief kit comprising a waterproof, durable plastic box that
holds a variety of items that can be used by people affected by a major
disaster. The box contains a disaster relief tent for an extended family, a
compact cooking stove, a tool kit, water purification kits, blankets
drawing books and crayons for kids and other items specified for a
particular type of disaster.
The ShelterBox will be sent out with the Athens Technical College
Rotaract Club’s name on it, and the club members will be given a number
so they can track the box, wherever it may go in the world.
Arrangements are being made to bring the ShelterBox to the Athens
Technical College Athens Campus to recognize the club’s volunteer work
on behalf of the organization.
