Award nominees give good showing at regional event
Rhonda Lastie, program chair for Athens Technical College’s social work assistant program, and Jeffrey Barnett, a
Marketing Management Program student at the college, represented Athens Tech at a recent regional awards competition held by
the Technical College System of Georgia.
Lastie, Athens Tech’s nominee for the Rick Perkins Award for Technical College Instructor of the Year, and Barnett, the
college’s Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) nominee, attended the regional event February 21 at the Forsyth
Conference Center of Lanier Technical College. Rick Perkins Award and GOAL nominees representing eight other colleges in the
Northern Region were in attendance as well. Colleges in the Northern Region include Gwinnett Tech, Lanier Tech, Georgia
Piedmont Tech, Chattahoochee Tech, Atlanta Tech, North Georgia Tech, Athens Tech, Georgia Northwestern Tech, and West
Georgia Tech.
Each of the nominees participated in a 20-minute interview that included a three-minute introductory “speech” followed by
a question-and-answer session. Once the interviews were complete, TCSG officials held a luncheon to honor RPA and GOAL and
to thank the judges. The panel of judges included a business, industry, and government representatives from all over North
Georgia. The judges will select three winners from the regional contest for each award, and those instructors and students will be
announced at a dinner in Atlanta April 25. The regional representatives will compete on the state level, April 26 and the state-wide
winners will be announced that evening.
Lastie said the competition was fun because she enjoys getting to talk about her students and her program. She said she is
looking forward to the state competition to be held April 25 in Atlanta. Barnett offered his thoughts, insights, and experiences
regarding technical education in the state of Georgia.
“Jeffrey always does a stellar job of sharing his compelling personal story of how Athens Technical College is making a
significant impact on his current life and setting him up for a successful future,” said Yancey Gulley, director of student activities
at Athens Tech. “He is a terrific advocate for technical education in this state and when he speaks, always emphasizes the power of
an education from one of the technical colleges in the state.”
