Dean biking to Savannah for good cause
Athens Technical College Dean of General Education Carol Myers will pedal her way more than 200 miles this weekend to
the Georgia coast as part of a bike ride fundraiser that will benefit education in Clarke County.
Bikers will spend two days, Friday and Saturday, traveling from Athens to Savannah in the 11th Annual Athens to
Savannah Double Century Cycle, which raises money for the Clarke County School District’s Foundation for Excellence in
Education. Dr. Myers is matching her $200 entry fee and donating to Athens Technical College’s Learning Support Scholarship,
overseen by the Athens Tech Foundation.
Dr. Myers, who has been training for the 11th Annual Athens to Savannah Double Century Cycle by riding 100 to 150
miles a week, will join more than 70 other riders on Friday when the depart from Homewood Hills Shopping Center, 2475
Jefferson Road, to begin the trek to Savannah. The two-day ride comprises two legs. The first is 107-mile ride from Athens to
Louisville. The second is 100 miles from Louisville to Savannah, where bikers will overnight before returning home via vans.
This year represents Dr. Myers’ second time riding in the event, which she said provides a great time of fellowship with
fellow riders and “an incredible sense of accomplishment, not just for the ride itself, but the training that made the ride possible.”
But the cycling fundraiser means so much more, she said.
“Ultimately, though, I feel very, very fortunate that I have the physical fitness and the resources to participate in rides like
this,” Dr. Myers said. “That the funds go to good causes is an extra benefit. In many ways, it is much easier for me to do a two-day
207 mile ride like this than it is for many of our students to find the resources, time, focus, and freedom to attend and succeed at
ATC. They have many more obstacles and responsibilities in their lives.”
