Students win medals in SkillsUSA competition
Several Athens Technical College students demonstrated outstanding skills and knowledge in their fields of study during
the 2012 SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference and Career Expo held in Atlanta in March.
The state-wide competition, themed, “SkillsUSA: Champions at Work – Skilled and Motivated” tests the abilities of
Georgia’s future workers and leaders.
Drafting Technology students Robert Denson and Leo Barron, along with Interior Design student Dawn Land, earned a
bronze medal for their team project, “Green Your School.” This contest challenged students to work with industry professionals to
analyze energy audits, review recycling practices, measure LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) scores, and
propose plans for Athens Technical College to become more green.
Drafting Technology student Kevin White also captured a bronze award for his work in the technical drafting category. Mr.
White took on the challenge of converting an 8’-6”x8’x40’ metal storage container into a living space.
The competition took place at the Marriott Marquis and Georgia International Conference Center in Atlanta, March 15-17.
