Rotaract members get chance to show off ShelterBox
Members of the Athens Technical College Rotaract Club pitched a big tent for their exhibit/booth during the Spring Fling
for Students in March. The tent and a variety of other survival goods were part of a ShelterBox, a disaster relief kit, distributed by
the international non-profit ShelterBox USA, (http://www.shelterbox.org/about.php?page=9).
Rotaract, sponsored by the Athens Rotary Club, is a service club for young men and women aged 18-30. In February,
Rotaract members raised more than $1,000 for the Athens Rotary Club’s first ever Plungefest that was held at Sandy Creek Park.
The Rotaract chapter’s Plungefest efforts garnered enough money to cover the cost of a ShelterBox that will bear the Athens
Technical College Rotaract’s name on it. Members will be assigned a number to track the box whenever it is put into service at
some disaster relief site around the world.
Attendees at the college’s Spring Fling for Students could walk in the spacious tent that is big enough to accommodate an
extended family. The display included the waterproof, durable plastic ShelterBox and other materials it holds, such as a compact
cooking stove, a tool kit, water purification kits, blankets, drawing books and crayons for kids and other items specified for a
particular type of disaster.
