Elberton company donates flat-bed trailer to truck driving program
Athens Technical College just expanded its commercial truck driving training repertoire through a generous gift from an
Elberton manufacturing company.
IMEX International, Inc., an Elberton plant that manufactures diamond segments, cutting blades, diamond wire and related
equipment used in the granite industry , recently donated a 1995 Fruehauf flatbed trailer to Athens Technical College’s
Commercial Truck Driving program fleet.
The college has been using several box (or van trailers) and one tanker in its instruction — but no flat-beds. With IMEX
International’s gift to the fleet, Mr. Don Nestor, program chair, will be able to train students on the unique aspects of pulling a flatbed trailer. Being able to train students with a flat-bed will be particularly useful because the local granite industry uses flatbed
trailers almost exclusively in hauling large blocks of granite.
Dr. Flora W. Tydings, president of Athens Technical College, expressed appreciation for IMEX’s donation and commented
on the value of the gift.
“The importance of this donation cannot be overstated,” she said. “Students enrolled in the Commercial Truck Driving
program can now receive hands-on training with a flat-bed trailer, and as a result, graduates of the program will be better prepared
for employment in the granite industry.”
IMEX International Inc. also services all types of saws and blades ranging in size from 12 inches to 14 feet. IMEX
employees provide round-the-clock service for segment tipping, tensioning and after-sale customer assistance.
The flat-bed trailer donation was arranged by Mr. Rod Daniel, a corporate officer at IMEX, on behalf of IMEX President
and CEO Massoud Besharat. Mr. Daniel is a member of the Athens Tech Foundation Board of Directors. Rod Daniel’s son,
Sterling Daniel, is employed at Athens Technical College in the office of inventory control, and his daughter-in-law, Andrea
Daniel, is vice president for student affairs at Athens Technical College.
