Haley to kick off Braves game singing the National Anthem
Athens Technical College instructor John Haley will raise his voice and Atlanta Braves fans’ patriotic spirits when he belts
out the “Star Spangled Banner” at the Braves baseball game against the Philadelphia Phillies Friday, July 27 at Turner Field in
Atlanta.
The event will mark Mr. Haley’s second time singing the National Anthem at Turner Field.
Mr. Haley’s July 27 delivery of the National Anthem will kick off “Athens Tech Night” at Turner Field with the baseball
game scheduled to start at 7:35 p.m. The Athens Tech Night was organized by the college’s business honor society, Alpha Beta
Gamma, of which Mr. Haley is the faculty advisor. ABG members are selling tickets to the game for Athens Technical College
students, staff, and their friends and family members. Turner Field Upper Pavilion tickets that normally cost $10 are available for
only $8 for those associated with the college. Game tickets are available from any Alpha Beta Gamma member or from Mr. Haley
— Room B-1128.
The event offers a way to celebrate the end of summer semester classes. Participants will provide their own transportation
and can take their own food and beverages but cannot take cans, glass or alcohol.
The first 10,000 fans to arrive at the stadium will receive a Tim Hudson Home Alternate T-shirt. Mr. Haley will sing just
prior to the start of the game.
Mr. Haley, a computer information systems instructor, annually sings the “Star Spangled Banner” at Athens Technical
College graduation ceremonies and has been delivering his rendition of the National Anthem at other Athens-area events for many
years. He has sung at Veterans Day commemorations and at various sporting events — among his most notable are a University of
Georgia baseball game at Foley Field and the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships when they were held at UGA’s
Gabrielsen Natatorium.
His experiences singing the National Anthem over the years piqued Mr. Haley’s desire to sing in a larger venue. He
researched online how to be considered as a singer at a Braves game and last year, he sent the Braves organization a DVD
recording from his graduation ceremony performance. He also had inquired about group tickets on behalf of Alpha Beta Gamma.
That request for group tickets prompted Turner Field officials to invite him to sing on that night.
Mr. Haley spent 21 years in the Navy, six working as an aviation technician and 15 as a supply officer. He received his
training in Athens at the U.S. Navy Supply Corps School, and after retiring from the service returned to Athens. After a few years
working as a product scheduler and manager in manufacturing, he began teaching at Athens Technical College and has been at the
college for 11 years.
