Early childhood group honors Buxton, Chisholm
The Georgia Association of Young Children, a non-profit professional organization that promotes quality early care and education for young
children, recently announced that Athens Technical College graduate Amber Buxton has won the group’s Student of the Year Award.
Ms. Buxton, who graduated this past spring with an associate degree in Early Childhood Care and Education, will receive the award at the
GAYC’s annual conference banquet in Gwinnett on September 28. She was selected from a pool of students nominated from all the two-year and
four-year colleges across the state.
In addition, the GAYC will recognize Athens-Clarke County Solicitor General C.R. Chisholm with the Southern Early Childhood Association
Marian B. Hamilton Award for his oversight of the educational program Hands are Not for Hitting, a program that addresses bullying and violent
behavior. Volunteers with Hands are Not for Hitting use puppets to get the message across to young children that there are nonviolent alternatives to
bullying. The program also addresses domestic violence situations that some children experience in their homes.
Ms. Buxton and other students in Athens Technical College’s Early Childhood Education serve as volunteer puppeteers in the Hands are Not
for Hitting program and present the show 13 or 14 times a year to a total of about 1,800 children, said Early Childhood Care and Education Chair
Lisa White, who nominated Ms. Buxton and Mr. Chisholm and who serves as an advisor to the GAYC.
Ms. Buxton represented an exemplary nominee for Student of the Year, Ms. White said.
“Amber is an outstanding student. She is involved and participates in classes, and is a founding member and current president of the Early
Childhood Education Student Association at the college,” Ms. White said.
Ms. Buxton plans to attend Piedmont College and earn her elementary education teaching certificate.
