The foundation will present Dr. Tydings with its Founders’ Award, recognizing her for outstanding initiatives and achievements in adult technical education as well as her leadership in economic development in the region, state and beyond. For more than two decades, Dr. Tydings has maintained educational and economic leadership roles. She has been instrumental in establishing a partnership between Athens Technical College and construction equipment manufacturing company Caterpillar by creating programs that provide educational courses and training that could prepare students for the types of jobs at Caterpillar’s planned plant in Athens. To honor Dr. Tydings, Caterpillar made its first gift to an Athens nonprofit by donating a $1,000 sponsorship to JRF for the annual dinner. Caterpillar was attracted to this event and organization initially because JRF is honoring Dr. Flora Tydings, but also because of JRF’s national impact and support of women studying engineering, said Mike White, human resource manager for the BCP Division/Athens GA of Caterpillar. Dr. Tydings also was among the team that worked to convince Baxter International to locate in nearby Walton County, because of Athens Technical College’s biotechnical training programs to develop the workforce. Dr. Tydings further contributes to the community through her service on the board of directors for the Athens-Clarke County Chamber of Commerce and the Athens Technical Foundation. She previously served as chairwoman of the Athens-Clarke Economic Development Foundation. Many Jeannette Rankin scholars begin their journey back to school at technical institutions like Athens Technical College. Named after the first woman elected to U.S. Congress, JRF is a national organization that awards scholarships to low-income women ages 35 and older The Annual Dinner event on Aug. 30 is a fundraiser supporting JRF’s scholarship program.
