Elberton garage boosts college’s Diesel Tech program with big tool cache
Darrell Moon’s Garage in Elberton played Santa Claus this summer and donated more than $18,000 worth of tools and equipment to Athens
Technical College’s Elbert County Campus, said Charles Dawson, the college’s program chair for Diesel Technology.
“That’s exactly what it was — Christmas in July,” Mr. Dawson said. “It sure was nice to get.”
Darrell Moon, the automotive service business owner and a member of the college’s Diesel Equipment Technology Program Advisory
Committee, bought out an Elberton Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac dealership that had gone bankrupt, Mr. Dawson said. Mr. Moon’s garage did not need
the tools and equipment, so he donated the goods to the college and used the philanthropic present as a tax write-off.
The unexpected gifts filled the back of two and a half pick-up trucks, Mr. Dawson said, and they included numerous GM specialty tools such
as testing equipment that determines the type of Freon an air conditioning system has in it, and an instrument that holds an automatic transmission for
a mechanic when it’s being rebuilt.
The inventory count and assessment, which was conducted by Mr. Dawson and students who volunteered after classes, included more than
500 items, many of them in hard plastic cases, which added to the overall value. Mr. Dawson and the students used laptop computers to log in the
part numbers and values, and they obtained information about pricing from comparable items on eBay, Mr. Dawson said. They determined that the
tools were worth a total of $17,800, and the hard tool cases probably cost $50 each, Mr. Dawson estimated.
Many of the tools in the summer windfall made possible by Moon’s Garage represent specialty items the Diesel Technology program could
never have found or afforded, and they will provide very valuable and rare opportunities for training, Mr. Dawson said.
