College's spelling team members give spirited performance
Athens Technical College’s spelling bee team, ATC — Free to Bee — fell one word short of winning the “gold” in the Athens-Clarke Adult
Literacy Council’s seventh annual Spirited Spelling Spectacular fundraiser August 26 at Hotel Indigo’s Rialto Room. But that was not before
correctly spelling numerous tough words and outlasting 12 other teams to make it to the finals with The Hot Spells, last year’s champions.
Eventually stumped by the word “orfevrerie” — which fittingly means a goldsmith’s or jeweler’s work — the Athens Technical College team
of Science Laboratory Manager Amy Abrahamsen, Workforce Investment Act Counselor Trina Lawrence, and Director of Library Services Carol
Stanley left out the “I.” Nevertheless, they took the second-place spot in the spelling bee and had fun doing it, they said. Along the way, they fielded
some zingers, including phrontistery, malfeasance, antipyretic, maneuver, cantankerous, edame, and antediluvian — the word that determined the
two teams vying for the championship.
With the competition narrowed, the rounds got progressively more difficult. Both finalist teams missed daguerreotype, laodicean, triskelion,
and sophrosyne before “orfevrerie” settled the contest.
“The last round was grueling, with the judges asking us several hard words that we and the Hot Spells all missed,” Ms. Abrahamsen said.
Even so, Ms. Abrahamsen, Ms. Lawrence and Ms. Stanley all said they really enjoyed the entire event, which included a reception and silent
auction.
“I loved being a member of the ATC Spelling Bee team,” Ms. Lawrence explained. “It was fun to compete against the other teams, and it was
great to raise money to help students receive their GED’s. These students will be one step closer to enrolling at Athens Tech and improving their
lives through education!”
The Athens-Clarke Literacy Council, chaired this year by Athens Technical College’s Director of Admissions Lenzy Reid, is a nonprofit,
volunteer organization that promotes and supports learning opportunities for adult residents in the Athens community. The group helps provide Adult
GED classes, Adult English as a Second Language classes and scholarships for GED testing.
