Women’s college scholarship foundation honors Dr. Tydings
The Jeannette Rankin Foundation honored Athens Technical College President Flora W. Tydings during the organization’s
annual Women’s Scholarship Fund dinner August 30 at the University of Georgia Tate Grand Hall.
The foundation presented Dr. Tydings with its Founders’ Award, recognizing her for outstanding initiatives and achievements in
adult technical education as well as her leadership in economic development in the region, state and beyond.
For more than two decades, Dr. Tydings, President of Athens Technical College, has maintained educational and economic
leadership roles. She has been instrumental in establishing a partnership between Athens Technical College and construction
equipment manufacturing company Caterpillar by creating training programs that provide educational courses for potential Caterpillar
employees. Dr. Tydings also was among the team that worked to convince Baxter International to locate in Georgia near the college’s
Walton County Campus, because of Athens Technical College’s biotechnical training programs that could help develop the company’s
workforce.
Dr. Tydings further contributes to the community through her service on the board of directors for the Athens-Clarke County
Chamber of Commerce and the Athens Tech Foundation. She previously served as chairwoman of the Athens-Clarke Economic
Development Foundation.
The Jeanette Rankin Foundation awards scholarships to low-income women aged 35 and older who are intent on furthering their
education. Many scholarship recipients begin their journey back to school at technical institutions like Athens Technical College. Named
after the first woman elected to U.S. Congress, the Jeannette Rankin Foundation is a national organization that was founded in Athens
in 1976 and is among the oldest nonprofits dedicated to adult women students. The foundation has awarded $1.8 million in
scholarships to date to more than 700 women. In 2012, 85 women are receiving scholarships of $2,000 each. Half of the recipients are
the first in their families to go to college, and 74 percent are heads of their households.
