Gifts of tool sets round out scholarships for ATC students
Industrial supplies distributor Grainger recently donated customized tool sets to Athens Technical College students Johnny Canazon and
Nathan Major as the capstones to scholarships the two young men earned this past year from Grainger.
Canazon, an industrial systems technology student, and Major, an automotive and diesel technician student, each used $2,000 scholarships to
pay for their tuition and books through Grainger’s Tools for Tomorrow® scholarship program for 2011. After completing their respective programs,
Canazon and Major each also received individualized Westward® toolkits from Grainger to help launch their careers.
“Today’s Athens Technical College students will become tomorrow’s industrial skilled tradesmen, dedicated to keeping Georgia
communities working and growing,” Walter Wellborn, manager of Grainger’s branch in Athens, said when the scholarships were first announced in
2011. “One of the best ways to invest in local communities is to contribute to the education of our future tradesmen and women.”
Wellborn presented the two young men with their customized tool sets Monday, August 27. The tool sets were valued between $1,000 and
$1,500.
Both Major and Canazon decided to pursue technical degrees to improve their skills in their respective trades.
After graduating high school, Major enrolled in Athens Technical College to pursue his passion for automotive repair. He earned his Diesel
Engine Service Technician Technical Certificate of Credit and his Diesel Electrical Systems Technician TCC in December, followed by his Diesel
Equipment Technology diploma in early August.
Canazon is using his Athens Technical College education to enhance the custom cabinet shop he operates with his wife. Canazon earned his
Industrial Fluid Power TCC in December and his Industrial Motor Controls Technician TCC at the end of April.
