Barbecues slated to fire up support for Adult Education
The Athens Tech Foundation kicked off a series of barbecue luncheons Friday, September 7, in Greensboro to raise awareness and funding
for Athens Technical College’s Adult Education program.
The September 7 affair at the Greene County Schools Transportation Center was the first of four events scheduled in September at Athens
Technical College campuses or Adult Education Centers in Northeast Georgia to celebrate Georgia Adult Education Literacy Month. The luncheons
are sponsored by Athens Regional Health System and Georgia Power.
Titled “Be a Stone, Cause a Ripple,” the Athens Tech Foundation campaign is designed to emphasize the economic impact of getting the
equivalent of a high school degree and moving toward a post-secondary education, said foundation Director Liz Dalton. To help reinforce the
message “Be a Stone, Cause a Ripple” guests and donors at the luncheons are encouraged to take with them engraved stones provided by Kaiser
Permanente.
“We want to raise awareness of the economic impact of adult education programs in a community,” Ms. Dalton said. “Completing a high
school education or earning your GED is a step toward more earning power.”
To further promote the importance of getting a GED, Athens Technical College’s Adult Education department is joining Adult Education
programs across the state in offering free GED practice tests this week — September 10-14 — at all its Adult Education Centers. More than one
million adults in Georgia don’t have a high school diploma. Obtaining a GED can make a big difference in those people’s job prospects, and a
practice test can help them prepare for that step. All prospective test-takers need to do is visit one of the centers and see how a small investment of
their time can open the door to greater opportunities for them and their families.
The Athens Tech Foundation luncheons are being held in Greene, Walton, Washington-Wilkes and Athens-Clarke during September. Another
barbecue event is scheduled in the college’s Hart County Adult Education Center in October. Funds raised at the events mainly will help cover GED
testing fee scholarships, but also could be applied toward instruction costs and equipment for computer-based testing.
The other three September luncheons will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the following dates: Thursday, September 13, Walton
County; Friday, September 14, Washington-Wilkes County; and Friday, September 21, Athens-Clarke County. The Hart County event will be held
from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on October 15.
