Physical Therapist Assistant students tee up for fundraiser
Students with Athens Technical College’s Physical Therapist Assistant program are massaging the details for a brand new golf tournament the group
is planning in November as a fundraiser to help cover costs for the American Physical Therapy Association Combined Sections Meeting in January
on the west coast.
The annual meeting is a great educational opportunity but involves travel costs and expenses, says PTA student Chris Morris, coordinator for
the golf tournament.
“It’s all about the learning experience,” says Mr. Morris, one of 17 Athens Technical College PTA students working on the event and wanting
to attend the January conference. “We want to see that every one of our classmates takes part in the meeting and not be limited by finances,” says
Mr. Morris, an Elberton resident.
The PTA students are organizing the Inaugural Athens Technical College PTA Classic Golf Tournament for Friday, November 16 at Lane
Creek Golf Course in Bishop. Proceeds from the event will pay for the students to attend the national gathering scheduled in January. Athens
Technical College PTA students try to participate every year, Morris says. Attendance at the annual meeting can be very helpful in a physical
therapist assistant’s career, he adds.
Fellow PTA student and Gainesville resident Jessie Mutchler, sponsorship coordinator for the tournament, agrees.
“This is the biggest conference they hold,” she says. “We will be exposed to potential jobs, and they offer classes for continuing education we
wouldn’t otherwise have. We’ll be learning our whole lives, but these specialty sessions at the annual meeting will be helpful in the field of
practice.”
Students can attend local or state meetings during the year, but they have to pay for each class they attend. At the annual meeting, however,
one fee covers all the classes they attend.
Some years, the annual sections meeting has been held in closer locations such as Nashville, Tennessee or other cities easily accessible by car
and more affordable for the Athens Technical College students. Other years, the event is held in more distant places such as the January conference’s
venue of San Diego, which requires students to pay for airline fares to get there. The costs for travel and registration for all 17 PTA students to
attend the 2013 conference is expected to exceed $14,000, Ms. Mutchler says.
Previously, the PTA students have paid for the annual meetings through support from student activity fees and other fundraisers. This year
they’ll need more funding sources, so they decided to organize a golf tourney, something in which Mr. Morris has experience.
Mr. Morris and Ms. Mutchler both are second-year PTA students and expect to graduate in May with their associate’s degrees. They also
worked as aides for physical therapists before enrolling in the PTA program at the college.
The November 16 golf fundraiser will feature a four-man team, Lauderdale format, meaning each team member hits their ball from the lie of
the best previous shot. Entry fees for the tourney are $75 per player, and the cost includes 18 holes of golf at Lane Creek, range balls to practice at the
course, lunch and dinner, and a tee gift. Mulligans and Par-3 string holes also are available.
The deadline for registering to play is November 9. Sign-in on the day of the tournament begins at 10:30 a.m. at Lane Creek with lunch
served at 11:30 a.m. and tee time set at 12:30 p.m.
