Adult Education instructor Nelma Hamby named Rick Perkins Award nominee
Nelma Hamby, lead instructor for Athens Technical College’s Walton County Adult Education Center, recently became the college’s nominee for
this year’s Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction. The award recognizes the state's outstanding instructors in technical
education.
An external committee comprising members from the college’s local board of directors and from the business community picked Ms. Hamby
to represent Athens Technical College from among three finalists at the college. The other two finalists were Tonya Trapp, program chair for
Drafting Technology; and Dr. Randall Fameree, a Life Sciences coordinator and instructor for Anatomy and Physiology. The selection committee
members said they were impressed with the college’s high-quality, dedicated and knowledgeable faculty.
Another committee consisting of former Rick Perkins Award nominees from Athens Technical College named the three finalists from a larger
group that included faculty members Michael Fowler, a Mathematics instructor; Howard Sokol, program director for Paralegal Studies; and Jill
Drerup, a Radiography instructor.
Prior to being selected as the 2013 Rick Perkins Award nominee for the college, Ms. Hamby’s dedicated work as the Adult Education lead
instructor at the Walton County Campus in Monroe also garnered her other recognition and awards over the years. Just last year, she received the
J.L. McGarity Citizenship Award from the Walton County Chamber of Commerce as well as a citation from the Georgia Department of Labor.
Her educational background includes an associate in arts degree from Truett-McConnell College, a bachelor of science degree in human
resources management from Brenau University, and a master’s in education from Brenau.
For Ms. Hamby, instructing in the Adult Education program represents not only a job, but a way of life.
“Education is the key to success, and I am so proud to have a part in these students’ lives as they turn the education key to doors that have
been locked tightly,” Ms. Hamby said.
The Rick Perkins Award has been an ongoing statewide recognition since 1991. The state-wide recipient of this annual award is recognized
as the Georgia Technical College System’s Instructor of the Year. Formerly known as the Commissioner’s Award of Excellence, the Rick Perkins
Award was renamed in memory of Thomas “Rick” Perkins, an instructor at West Central Technical College, who received the Commissioner’s
Award of Excellence prior to his untimely death. The Rick Perkins Award winner serves as an ambassador for technical education in Georgia. He or
she will make public appearances throughout the year including addresses to the Georgia General Assembly, the Governor, and the Georgia
Technical College System Leadership Conference.
Annually, all 26 technical colleges, plus the four Regents system schools with technical divisions, each nominate an instructor to represent
their college for the statewide honor. As Athens Technical College’s nominee, Ms. Hamby now will go on to represent the college in a regional
competition in February to be held at Lanier Technical College. Regional winners then will compete for the state-wide award.
