National nursing group selects Callahan as evaluator
Athens Technical College’s Nursing program Chair Lori Callahan’s expertise in nursing and nursing education has earned her a prestigious spot on a
national accrediting organization.
The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission in February appointed Ms. Callahan as one of 50 new evaluators who will travel
the country assessing nursing and medical educational programs.
and 23.
The appointment was unexpected, said Ms. Callahan, who found out at during the NLNAC Nursing Program Evaluator Forum, February 22
“I was surprised when I went for a training session to learn I was one of a relatively few selected,” Ms. Callahan said. “I didn’t realize I was
in such a select group.”
The forum covered the 2013 NLNAC standards and criteria and a “detailed insight” on each criterion, Ms. Callahan added.
The National League for Nursing monitors up to 1,500 nursing programs across the nation. Ms. Callahan will join other evaluators who will
help make 100 visits in the fall and 100 in the spring to evaluate different nursing education programs.
The NLNAC can be beneficial for her job and Athens Technical College as well, Ms. Callahan said.
“For me personally, it gives me the opportunity to see what other programs around the country are doing and see if I can bring something
back to our college as a positive outcome,” she said. “Plus, I’ll be communicating with my peers and colleagues around the country.”
Ms. Callahan obtained her bachelor of science in degree in nursing from the Medical College of Georgia – Athens in 1988. She
graduated from Georgia State University in 1997 with a master of science, Nurse Practitioner degree, specializing in women’s health and nursing
education.
She worked for Athens Regional Medical Center as the assistant unit director of the family care unit until she began her career in nursing
education, nurse consulting and program evaluator. During her career she has worked as a nurse educator in associate degree and bachelor degree
programs for public and proprietary nursing programs throughout Florida, South Carolina and Georgia. She previously taught in the associate degree
nursing program at Athens Technical College as an adjunct and faculty member. She moved to Florida for five or six years and then returned to
Athens Technical College in July 2012 when the program director slot opened up for the college’s Nursing department.
