Rotaract members plunge into community service
The ATC Plungers — members of the Athens Technical College Rotaract Club — made a big splash in the annual Athens Rotary Club Polar
Bear Plungefest, held February 2 at Sandy Creek Park, by raising the most funds of any participating team. Members of Rotaract, a service club
sponsored by the Athens Rotary, raised more than $2,000 for the event that benefits a new Habitat for Humanity home in Athens.
The $1,500 includes matching funds from Athens Rotary Club member Justin Widener and from Chief Magistrate Judge Patricia Barron,
Athens Technical College’s local Board chair and Athens Rotary Club advisor to Rotaract.
For the Plungefest, in which participants charge across the sandy beach and into the frigid waters of Lake Chapman at Sandy Creek Park,
Rotaract showed up in force with 30-plus representatives, comprising club members, family members and friends. They sported costumes depicting a
construction theme, and props of saws, hammers and shovels were provided by club member Nat Whitney and his wife, Jeri. Marchelle Sandoval,
club supporter and Student Affairs assistant, customized the hard hats worn by the team members.
The ATC Plungers won several awards besides Most Money Raised by a Team. Club member Kala Jones McNair, assistant director of
Registration and Records for the college, won Best Costume by a Female and Most Money Raised by an Individual. Club member Becky Reese’s 4year-old daughter Rhielle won Youngest Plunger for getting her pinkies in the cold surf.
Rotaract members also will work on the new Habitat house being constructed on Carter Drive in west Athens. The club members gathered
March 1 with dignitaries at the construction site for a ground-breaking ceremony.
Athens Technical College’s Director of Student Affairs Jane Brown expressed her pride in the Rotaract Club’s selfless efforts for the
community.
“I am so proud of each and every one of the ATC Plungers for all the work they did in preparation and on the day of the Plungefest event,”
Ms. Brown said. “Our students are the best.”
