ATC students stand out in IAAP conference competition
Athens Technical College students Justin Arthur and Pamela Strawn recently captured two awards each in competition at a conference in
Augusta for the International Association of Administrative Professionals.
The two Business Administrative Technology students were part of a group of eight Athens Technical College IAAP members and one
advisor who attended the Annual Certification and Development Workshop/Student Conference sponsored by the Georgia Division of the IAAP and
the Evans Towne Center Chapter (Kansas City) of IAAP. The event was held March 1-2 at the Double Tree by Hilton hotel in Augusta. The theme
for the conference was “Rise to the Top! And Be the One.” Events for the weekend included student competitions, educational training and
networking opportunities.
In the competitive categories held Friday, March 1, students vied for awards in four categories: Microsoft Office 2010, Grammar
Rules/Business Writing, CAP Mock Exam, and Public Speaking.
Mr. Arthur, president of Athens Technical College’s student chapter of IAAP, won second place in Microsoft Office 2010 and in Public
Speaking. After graduating, Mr. Arthur intends to earn his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Georgia’s Terry College
of Business. An MBA will ensure that he is prepared to run his family’s farm that raises chickens, angus beef cattle and goats, Mr. Arthur said.
“The education that I have received at Athens Technical College has helped ensure that I am on the path to achieving my dream,” he said.
Ms. Strawn won second place in Grammar Rules/Business Writing and third place in Public Speaking. Once she completes her Business
Administrative Technology diploma, Ms. Strawn plans to pursue her associate’s degree in the same area of study at Athens Technical College. She
expects to graduate after spring semester 2014, then look for a job that will utilize her educational credentials.
“I hope to secure a business position at UGA, Athens Technical College or a local medical facility,” she said.
She is entertaining the idea of pursuing other educational opportunities as well.
