The $5,000 will be used to purchase computers to administer GED testing to Adult Education students. In January 2013, the state of Georgia will require all GED testing to be conducted on computers, and the grant from Plum Creek Foundation will enable the college’s Adult Education program to purchase computers for that testing software. Jim Rundorff, senior director of land asset management with Plum Creek’s Oconee County office stopped by Athens Technical College April 5 to present the grant check to college administrators. Grant committee members with Plum Creek praised the work that the adult education program does, Mr. Rundorff said. “Everybody deserves the chance to expand their knowledge, and people get that chance through free courses offered by Athens Technical College’s Adult Education program,” Mr. Rundorff said. “It is wonderful to see that an organization such as this really cares about its community and wants to see citizens grow and improve.” The Plum Creek Foundation’s grant for Adult Education is very timely, Athens Technical College President Flora Tydings said. “This grant comes at a crucial time for us, and we are so grateful for Plum Creek’s generosity in helping our Adult Education program,” Dr. Tydings said. “Budget cuts and a mandate for all GED testing to be done on computers means our Adult Education centers will have to purchase upgraded computers to handle the capacity. Plum Creek’s gracious gift is helping make that possible.” Plum Creek is one of the largest private landowners in the nation and the most geographically diverse, with approximately 6.4 million acres in major timber producing regions of the United States. The company produces lumber, plywood and medium density fiberboard (MDF) in its wood products manufacturing facilities in the Northwest and also operates a estate development business that is a taxable REIT subsidiary Photo caption: Left to right: Athens Technical College Vice President for Student Affairs Andrea Daniel, college President Flora Tydings, Plum Creek's senior director of land asset management Jim Rundorff, and the college’s Adult Education Director Temple Bennett.
