Among the honors won by the Chi Zeta chapter were: Chapter president Wayne Martin earned the Hausman Siegel Distinguished Chapter President Award; Dr. Yancey Gulley, director of Student Activities, received the Excellence in Administration Award; Student Kayla Ballew received The Eva Bobrow Memorial Medallion of Excellence Award and The Dr. Mary Bone Competitive Essay (for Ms. Ballew’s essay titled, “What Alpha Beta Gamma Means to Me.” The Chi Zeta chapter also earned awards for Best Chapter Website and The Professor Donald Bertram Community Service Award for the chapter that demonstrates innovation in service to the community. During the conference held in late March, members of the national honor society also elected two Athens Technical College students to executive positions. Mr. Martin was named National Student President, and Chi Zeta chapter Secretary Winona Meddings was elected to the Student Executive Committee as Secretary. Six Athens Technical College students represented the ABG chapter at the conference this year along with chapter adviser John Haley, an instructor in Computer Information Systems. Those Athens Technical College students attending included: Ms. Ballew (chapter executive vice president); Denny Galt; Mr. Martin, Ms. Meddings, Emily Nix, and Jamie Sconyers. The students who attended the conference are the core of the college’s chapter, Mr. Haley said. “Several other members help out with various projects, but these six students have given numerous hours of their time to ensure that the campus and community service projects are carried out effectively,” Mr. Haley said. “They have a service minded attitude and are always looking for ways to help others on campus or in the community.” The six students have taken the lead with a variety of local activities and projects, efforts that earned the chapter the Excellence in Community Service Award, Mr. Haley said. The chapter has supported the science fair , the Optimist Club, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, the American Heart Association's Heart Walk, Books for Keeps, and Soles4Souls.
