The two, who will receive their associate of applied science degrees during the May 8 graduation ceremony, will be recognized during the ceremony as Athens Technical College Presidential Scholars. Earlier this year, they were selected as the college’s nominees for the All-Georgia Community College Academic Team, which recently met to determine regional finalists for the All-USA Community College Academic Team. The All-USA Community College Academic Team essentially is a scholarship program presented by USA Today and Phi Theta Kappa and sponsored by Follett Higher Education Group. Students are nominated from their home institution for their all-around academic success, leadership qualities, and community service. Nominees from each community college around the state attend a luncheon and competition sponsored by Coca-Cola to determine the regional finalists. Regional finalists then go on to the national competition with the possibility of being named one of the 20 students for the national team. Ms. Smith is graduating with an associate of applied science degree in Marketing. Her goal is to transfer and continue her education in order to become an illustrator. A 2008 graduate of Cedar Shoals High School, Ms. Smith joined the U.S. Air Force and worked in security before being discharged for medical reasons. She decided to enroll at the college to obtain practical skills in order to meet her career goals. Rebecca Reese is graduating with an associate of applied science degree in Biotechnology and is scheduled to complete her work at the end of summer semester. She wants to continue her education in order to work in immunology or possibly bio-manufacturing, and is currently working in immunology and bio-manufacturing at Abeome Corporation in Athens. Ms. Reese graduated from Dacula High School in 1998 and entered Life University for a short time before becoming an office manager. After losing her job to lay-offs, she realized she needed specialized skills, and in pursuing her studies at Athens Technical College, she discovered her love of math and science.
