Diagnostic Medical Sonography program continues accreditation
The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs recently awarded continuing accreditation to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography
program at Athens Technical College, thereby recognizing the program’s substantial compliance with nationally established standards.
The accreditation followed a recent peer review and site visit conducted by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
The accreditation process evaluates the quality of institutions, programs and services, and measures them against accepted quality standards to ensure that
those standards are met. CAAHEP serves as a programmatic, or specialized, accreditation commission that examines specific programs within an educational
institution. The national standards for programs have been developed primarily by professionals involved in the discipline being taught in the respective
programs. Many health care fields require that prospective employees earn their credentials from accredited schools.
According to information from the CAAHEP, the accreditation process involves a selfstudy by program staff members who assess how the program adheres
to the national standards. A peer review team then visits the college to determine how well the selfstudy reflects the status of the program. An accreditation
committee specific to the profession being taught then reviews the report from the site review team and develops a recommendation that is sent to the CAAHEP
Board of Directors for final action.
Glenn Henry, dean of Life Sciences for Athens Technical College, credited Christine Schara, program director for Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at
the college, and Anna Turner, clinical coordinator for the program, with the successful effort to obtain the accreditation.
“Christine Schara and Anna Turner are to be commended for all of their hard work to ensure continuing accreditation for the DMS program,” Mr. Henry
said.
