College offers pocket-sized Constitution booklets to highlight the significance of September
17
More than 225 years ago, on September, 17, 1787, delegates attending the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia signed and adopted the
United States Constitution. The document, which was ratified in 1788 and put into effect in 1789 as America’s supreme law, is the world’s longest
surviving written government charter. It established the United States’ system of government and outlined the basic freedoms Americans have held
so dearly to this day. Using “We the People” as its opening line, the U.S. Constitution emphasizes the government’s role of serving all its citizens.
In 2004, Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia introduced a Senate resolution that was enacted as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act,
Public Law 108-447, designating September 17 as Constitution Day. The act requires all educational institutions that receive federal funds to
implement educational programs relating to the U.S. Constitution on September 17 each year in an attempt to increase students' knowledge and
understanding of the Constitution and to encourage stronger participation in citizenship, civics, and the government.
To help increase the knowledge and appreciation of the United States Constitution among its students, Athens Technical College is joining
colleges and universities around the nation in celebrating Constitution Day 2013 and offering free pocket-sized U.S. Constitution booklets to
students. The free pocket Constitution booklets are currently available to all students in the Financial Aid Office in H-700 on the Athens Campus.
Students attending classes at the Elbert, Greene, and Walton campuses may obtain copies of the booklet in the main offices of their campuses on
September 17 or by sending an email to [email protected].
