competitionsattheannualAthensHome&GardenShowbeingheldthisweekendintheClassicCenter,300N.ThomasStreet.
TheAthensHome&GardenShow,sponsoredandorganizedbytheAthensAreaHomeBuildersAssociation,istakingplaceSaturdayand
Sunday,February22and23.Theshowhighlightsthelatesttrendsandproductsinthehomeandgardenindustryandfeaturesbuilders,
architects,landscapersandothercompaniesandservicesassociatedwiththoseareas.Organizerswiththehomeandgardenshowinvited
CulinaryArtsstudentsandInteriorDesignstudentsfromAthensTechnicalCollegetoparticipateintwospecialeventsduringtheweekend
programs.
InteriorDesignstudentswillfaceoffagainsttheirpeersattheUniversityofGeorgiaintheWhiteRoomChallenge.Theymustusea
virtualbudgetof$1,500totransforma12­footby14­foot,three­walled,sheet­rockedspacewithabarefloorintoafurnishedroomfora
home.TheteamsshoppedattheHabitatRestoreforfurnitureandaccessoriesandpurchasedflooringmaterialfromDaltonCarpetOne.
StudentshavetheentiredaySaturdayduringtheeventtopaintthewalls,installtheflooring,furnitureandaccessoriesandcompletethe
designchallengewhileattendeeswatchthework.OnSunday,ajudge'spanelcomprisingdesignandbuildingprofessionalswillcritiquethe
tworoomsbasedonfivecriteria:placement(formandfunction),balance(colorandweight),bestuseofmaterialsandaccessories,most
invitingatmosphere,andbestuseoflighting.JudgeswillannouncethewinnersSundayat1:30p.m.
“Thiscompetitionwillprovidethestudentswith‘realworld’workforceexperiencebydevelopingaprojectundertightspecifics:limited
sourceselections,anestablishbudget,followingdesigndirectivesandcompetingwithanother‘firm’towinthejob,” saidPhillipC.Myer,
programchairforInteriorDesignatAthensTechnicalCollege.“Thecorelearningexperiencewillfocusonhowthestudentsworktogether
asteammembers.Team­basedworkisthecornerstoneofthebuildingartsfields—architecture,interiordesignandconstruction.”
CulinaryArtsstudentsfromthecollegewillvieamongthemselvesforprimacyintheCupcakeWars,sponsoredbytheGeorgiaGrown
(GeorgiaDepartmentofAgriculture),KitchenAid,theGeorgiaPecanCouncilandtheGeorgiaPeachBoard.ThecontestcallsforaGeorgia
themeinthecupcakebaking,meaningcontestantswillincorporatepecansorpeachesintheircreations,saidChefScottHoward,program
chairforCulinaryDesignatAthensTechnicalCollege.
ThejudgespanelforCupcakeWarsincludesTracyTownsend,MollyDeFabio,CarolineAngelo,KaylaMcNair,LisaVaughn,KaylaBallew
allfromAthensTechnicalCollege,andSadieKrawczykfromtheMonroeDowntownDevelopmentAuthority.Thewinningstudentwill
receiveaprofessionalKitchenAidMixeranddoa30­secondcookingdemoonGPBTVGeorgiaGrowntorunonGPBduringtheGeorgia
TravelerTVshow.
“Thisevent,likelastyear,providestheopportunitytospotlighttheoutstandingyoungculinariansinourprogramtotheAthens
community,”ChefHowardsaid.“It’salwaysajoytowatchourstudentsperformduringeventstothehighlevelofskillandprofessionalism
theyconsistentlydemonstrate.“
TheAthensHome&GardenShowwillrunfrom10a.m.to5p.m.Saturday,February22andfromnoonto5p.m.Sunday,February23.
