Interior Design, Culinary Arts students showcase skills at home and garden show

competitionsattheannualAthensHome&GardenShowbeingheldthisweekendintheClassicCenter,300N.ThomasStreet.
TheAthensHome&GardenShow,sponsoredandorganizedbytheAthensAreaHomeBuildersAssociation,tookplaceSaturdayand
Sunday,February22and23.Theshowhighlightsthelatesttrendsandproductsinthehomeandgardenindustryandfeaturesbuilders,
architects,landscapersandothercompaniesandservicesassociatedwiththoseareas.Organizerswiththehomeandgardenshowinvited
CulinaryArtsstudentsandInteriorDesignstudentsfromAthensTechnicalCollegetoparticipateintwospecialeventsduringtheweekend
programs.
InteriorDesignstudentsfacedoffandwonagainsttheirpeersattheUniversityofGeorgiaintheWhiteRoomChallenge.Theyuseda
virtualbudgetof$1,500totransforma12­footby14­foot,three­walled,sheet­rockedspacewithabarefloorintoafurnishedroomfora
home.TheteamsshoppedattheHabitatRestoreforfurnitureandaccessoriesandpurchasedflooringmaterialfromDaltonCarpetOne.
StudentshadtheentiredaySaturdayduringtheeventtopaintthewalls,installtheflooring,furnitureandaccessoriesandcompletethe
designchallengewhileattendeeswatchthework.OnSunday,ajudge'spanelcomprisingdesignandbuildingprofessionalscritiquedthetwo
roomsbasedonfivecriteria:placement(formandfunction),balance(colorandweight),bestuseofmaterialsandaccessories,mostinviting
atmosphere,andbestuseoflighting.JudgesannouncedtheAthensTechnicalCollegeInteriorDesignstudentsasthewinnersSundayat1:30
p.m.
“Thiscompetitionprovidedthestudentswith‘realworld’workforceexperiencebydevelopingaprojectundertightspecifics:limited
sourceselections,anestablishbudget,followingdesigndirectivesandcompetingwithanother‘firm’towinthejob,” saidPhillipC.Myer,
programchairforInteriorDesignatAthensTechnicalCollege.“Thecorelearningexperiencefocusesonhowthestudentsworktogetheras
teammembers.Team­basedworkisthecornerstoneofthebuildingartsfields—architecture,interiordesignandconstruction.”
CulinaryArtsstudentsfromthecollegebattledamongthemselvesforprimacyintheCupcakeWars,sponsoredbytheGeorgiaGrown
(GeorgiaDepartmentofAgriculture),KitchenAid,theGeorgiaPecanCouncilandtheGeorgiaPeachBoard.ThecontestcalledforaGeorgia
themeinthecupcakebaking,meaningcontestantshadtoincorporatepecansorpeachesintheircreations,saidChefScottHoward,program
chairforCulinaryDesignatAthensTechnicalCollege.
Whenallthecupcakebatterhadsettled,studentYvonneSprinkledbestedherfellowstudentswithawinforhercranberryorange
cupcakesonanuttypecancrust,filledwithatoastedpecancaramel,icedwitharichcreamcheesefrosting,andtoppedwithglazedpecans
andahandcraftedmodifiedorangeblossomflower.
ThejudgespanelforCupcakeWarsincludedTracyTownsend,MollyDeFabio,CarolineAngelo,KaylaMcNair,LisaVaughn,KaylaBallew
allfromAthensTechnicalCollege,andSadieKrawczykfromtheMonroeDowntownDevelopmentAuthority.Ms.Sprinklewonaprofessional
KitchenAidMixerandwillprovidea30­secondcookingdemoonGPBTVGeorgiaGrowntorunonGPBduringtheGeorgiaTravelerTV
show.
“Thisevent,likelastyear,providestheopportunitytospotlighttheoutstandingyoungculinariansinourprogramtotheAthens
community,”ChefHowardsaid.“It’salwaysajoytowatchourstudentsperformduringeventstothehighlevelofskillandprofessionalism
theyconsistentlydemonstrate.“
