GOAL program shines spotlight on academic, leadership excellence
AprilMooreSkelton,aPhysicalTherapistAssistantstudentatAthensTechnicalCollege,haswonthehonorofrepresentingthecollegein
the2014GeorgiaOccupationalAwardofLeadership(GOAL)competitionwiththeTechnicalCollegeSystemofGeorgia.
TheGOALprogramrecognizesexcellenceinacademicsandleadershipamongthestate’stechnicalcollegestudents. GOALwinnersare
selectedateachofthestate’s26technicalcollegesaswellasthetwoBoardofRegentscollegeswithtechnicaleducationdivisions.
Ms.SkeltonwaschosentorepresentthecollegefromagroupofAthensTechnicalCollegestudentswhowereselectedasthecollege’s
GOALsemi­finalists,accordingtoDr.YanceyGulleycoordinatorforthecollege’sGOALprogram.
Theothersemi­finalistsincludedJoanaBarbosa,InteriorDesignprogram;TiffanyGarrett,DentalHygieneprogram;andBruceGrant,
ParalegalStudiesprogram.
“ThesestudentsrepresentsomeofthebesteffortsofAthensTechnicalCollege,”saidcollegePresidentFloraTydings.“Theyareproven
leadersbothintheiracademicendeavorsandthroughtheirinvolvementoncampusandintheircommunity.Wearehonoredtohavesuch
talentedanddedicatedindividualsasmembersofthecollegecommunity.”
ApanelofcommunityleadersmetwiththeAthensTechnicalCollegeGOALsemi­finaliststudentsinJanuarytoselectthecollege’sGOAL
winner.
Ms.Skelton,whoearnedabachelor’sdegreebeforeenrollingatAthensTechnicalCollege,decidedtopursuetechnicaltrainingsothat
shecanusehereducationandworkexperiencetopromotethefieldofphysicaltherapy,serveothers,andhelpbringaboutgreaterhealthin
hercommunity,shesaid.
WhenaskedwhyshechoseAthensTechnicalCollege,shereplied,“Iamintheprimeofmyworkinglifeandneededacareerchange.
Whenseekingrigorous,career­focusedtrainingthatwouldnottakemeoutoftheworkforcefortoolong,Ifoundmylocaltechnicalcollege
tobeaperfectfit.Knowingthatsuchawonderfuleducationalopportunityexistedinmydesiredfield,IknewthatAthensTechnicalCollege
wastheplaceforme.Theaffordabilityoftechnicaleducation,therelativelyshortdurationoffull­timeschooling,thequalityoftraining,and
thehealthyjobmarketinmychosenfieldmeansmyreturnoninvestmentlooksveryfavorable,indeed.”
Dr.EllenO’KeefeandDr.DianaCarman,facultyinthePhysicalTherapistAssistantprogram,praisedMs.Skelton’soutstanding
leadershipandcommunicationskills,andphenomenalorganizationalskills.
“Sheexemplifiesprofessionalisminappearanceanddemeanor,”saidDr.O’Keefe,whoservesasthePhysicalTherapistAssistant
programchair.“Herstrongleadershipskills,workethic,andwillingservicetothecommunityandprofessionsetherapartfromother
students.”
GOALwinnersfromeachcollegecompetedinregionaljudginginFebruary.InApril,allcollegewinnerswilltraveltoAtlantawherethe
ninesemi­finalists(threefinalistsfromeachofthethreeregions)willbeannouncedandwillcompeteatthestate­level.Onestudentwillbe
namedasthestatewideGOALwinner.ThestateGOALwinnerbecomesthestudentambassadorfortheTechnicalCollegeSystemofGeorgia.
"ThepurposeoftheGOALprogramistospotlighttheoutstandingachievementbystudentsinGeorgia'stechnicalcollegesandto
emphasizetheimportanceoftechnicaleducationintoday’sglobalworkforce,"Dr.Gulleysaid.
