Jeannette Rankin legacy maintains local connections
The2014themeforWomen’sHistoryMonth,heldinMarch,celebrates“WomenofCharacter,Courage&Commitment.”Thatthemefits
particularlywellforhistoricfigureJeannetteRankin(1880­1973),whoin1916wonelectiontoserveasthefirstwomanRepresentativein
theU.S.House.Shealsohasalocalconnection.
Ms.Rankin,whowasastaunchproponentofwomen’srights,waselectedtoCongressasaMontanarepresentative,andendedup
buyingpropertyandahomeinWatkinsvilleinthelate1920s.Fromthe1940stoherdeathin1973,shesplittimebetweenGeorgia,
Montana,andtheCaliforniacoast.
ItwasthroughMs.Rankin’sOconeeCountyhomethatanotherlocalconnectiontoherlegacywasestablished.Inherwill,Ms.Rankinleft
$16,000fromherGeorgiaestatetoassist"mature,unemployedwomenworkers."Thatestategiftwastheseedmoneyin1976— threeyears
afterMs.Rankin’sdeath— tolaunchtheJeannetteRankinFoundation,whichisbasedinAthensandprovidesscholarshipstohelplow­
incomewomenovertheageof35completetheireducationsandbetterpreparethemforsuccess.
In1978,theJeannetteRankinFoundation(nowcalledtheJeannetteRankinWomen’sScholarshipFund)awardedonescholarshipinthe
amountof$500,accordingtotheorganization’swebsite.Sincethattime,thefundhasawardedmorethan$1.8millioninscholarshipsto
morethan700women.
In2012,theJeannetteRankinWomen’sScholarshipFundhonoredAthensTechnicalCollegePresidentFloraW.Tydingsduringthe
organization’sannualWomen’sScholarshipFunddinner.ThefoundationpresentedDr.TydingswithitsFounders’Award,recognizingher
foroutstandinginitiativesandachievementsinadulttechnicaleducationaswellasherleadershipineconomicdevelopmentintheregion,
stateandbeyond.
TheJeannetteRankinScholarshipFundmightprovideafundingsourceforsomefemalestudentsenrolledinoracceptedtoAthens
TechnicalCollege.Studentsfirstmustdetermineeligibilitybeforeapplying.
Applicantsmustbe:awomanwhois35orolder;low­income;aU.S.citizenorpermanentresidentoftheUnitedStates;pursuinga
technicalorvocationaleducation,anassociate’sdegree,orafirstbachelor’sdegree;andenrolledinoracceptedtoaregionallyoraschool
accreditedbytheAccreditingCouncilforIndependentCollegesandSchools.AthensTechnicalCollegeisaccreditedthroughtheSouthern
AssociationofCollegesandSchoolsCommissiononCollege,whichisanacceptedaccreditationfortheJeannetteRankinScholarshipFund.
