Walker’s enthusiasm earns EAGLE Spirit Award from peers
DentalAssistingstudentMarkeyWalker,whowasAthensTechnicalCollege’sdelegateforthestatewideEAGLEAwardwiththe
TechnicalCollegeSystemofGeorgia,wasgivenanewiPadforwinningtheprogram’sSpiritAward,asvotedbyherfollowdelegatesMarch
27inAtlanta.
“HispeergroupofEAGLEdelegatesvotedhimtopsinenthusiasmfortheEAGLEprogram,”saidGwenEvans,executivedirectorfor
AdultEducationwithAthensTechnicalCollege.“Markeyreceivedastandingovationafteraheartfeltdeliveryofhisspeechhighlightingthe
impactAdultEducationhasmadeinhislife.”
TheopportunitytorepresentAthensTechnicalCollegeintheEAGLEprogramwasa“positivelearningexperience,”saidMr.Walker.
HeplanstousethenewiPadforhisstudiesatAthensTechnicalCollege,hesaid.
OfficialswiththeTCSGpresentedthespecialawardtoMr.Walkerduringaceremonyhonoringthe28adultlearnerswhowereselected
asdelegatefinalistsintheEAGLEAwardprogram.EachdelegatewaspresentedwithanEAGLEAwardstatueattheeventheldintheGrand
HyattHotel.
Nowinits21styear,thesystem’sEAGLE(ExceptionalAdultGeorgianinLiteracyEducation)Awardacknowledgestheoutstanding
accomplishmentsofGeorgianswhoenrollintheTCSG’sadulteducationprogramsinordertostudyforandearntheirGED®credential.
Morethan71,000menandwomentookpartinGeorgia’sadulteducationprogramslastyear,and15,450receivedtheirGEDcredential.
EachMarch,the28localEAGLEwinnersaretheguestsofathree‐dayconferenceinAtlantathatendswithalunchbanquetintheir
honor.Almost300guestsapplaudedthestudentsforovercomingobstaclesthatoncestoodinthewayoftheireducationandthenexcelling
intheclassroomwhilepreparingfortheirGEDcredential.
TheawardswerepresentedbyTCSGCommissionerRonJacksonandBeverlySmith,theTCSGassistantcommissionerforadult
education.Jacksonpraisedthestudentsfortheirachievementandaskedthemtosharetheirpositivemessageintheirhometowns.
“Yoursuccessmakesyougreatrolemodelsforthe1.2millionadultsinGeorgiawhostilldonotpossessahighschooldiploma,”Mr.
Jacksonsaid.“WeneedyoutospreadthewordtoyourfellowGeorgiansthatobtainingaGEDcredentialisanimportantsteptoward
discoveringyourpotential,gettingabetterjob,andimprovingthefutureforyou,yourfamilyandyourcommunity.”
JacksonthenannouncedthatapanelofjudgesfrombusinessandeducationhadselectedUniqueBunch,anEAGLEdelegatefromAtlanta
TechnicalCollege,tobetheTCSG’s2014adulteducationstudentoftheyear.Hehandedherasetofkeystothegrandprize,anew2014
MitsubishiLancerESthatwasdonatedbyJeffSmith,theowneroftheJeffSmithMitsubishi,ChevroletandForddealershipsinByron,
Georgia;theJeffSmithKiaandDodgeChryslerJeepindealershipsinPerry;andtheJeffSmithAutomotiveGroupinWarnerRobins.
Overthecomingyear,BunchwilltravelthestateinthenewcarwhilesheservesasGeorgia’sEAGLEambassadorforadulteducation.
Shewillbespeakingtostudents,civicgroups,legislatorsandothersaboutlifelonglearningandtheimportanceofearningaGEDcredential.
