Jones, an Athens Technical College student in the Nursing program, was one of only 20 recipients across the country to receive this prestigious honor. Jones found a passion for assisting others through nursing after her husband was severely burned in a kitchen fire. The nurses caring for him in the burn unit encouraged her to pursue an education in nursing. After earning a Healthcare Science certificate and completing a competitive selection process, Jones was accepted into the Nursing program at Athens Technical College. “In my course she showed dedication as a student and is very deserving of the award,” said Rob Nichols, Anatomy and Physiology instructor at Athens Technical College. Nichols is also the advisor for the Alpha Tau Zeta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. A resident of Rutledge, Ga., Jones owned an antiques business before devoting her time to her Nursing education. To assist with her educational expenses, Jones has received scholarships, in addition to the Frank Lanza Memorial Scholarship, from the Jeannette Rankin Foundation and the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. Jones has been a member of the Athens Technical College chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society since 2012 and currently serves as the vice president-elect for membership. Frank Lanza Scholars are awarded $2,500 scholarship to facilitate completion of associate degrees in nursing, respiratory care, or emergency medical services. The award criteria includes outstanding academic achievement and leadership accomplishments. The Frank Lanza Memorial Scholarship was established to honor Lanza’s visionary business leadership and generous commitment to charitable causes. -MORE- Lanza Scholar- Page 2 Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Miss., is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,285 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, plus Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, Peru, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates, and U.S. territorial possessions.
