Silver Medal Awarded to Culinary Arts Students
Athens Technical College Culinary Arts Team Competes in the Georgia State Student
Championships
ATHENS, GA (1/13/2015) – A silver medal was awarded to the Culinary Arts team from Athens Technical
College during the recent Georgia State Student Championships. The competition was held at the
Walton County Campus of Athens Technical College on November 23, 2014.
Culinary Arts students competed in areas of entrée course, fish course, dessert course, and salad course.
During the competition, students had to prepare portions of a four course meal. Students also
completed a skills relay focused on preparing meats, knife techniques, and pastry preparation. Each
team member was responsible for a specific part of the competition, as well as showing a proficiency in
all four skills categories. The Athens Technical College team consisted of Mark Weinfurter, team captain
and entrée course; Madelyn Carroll, fish course; Leslie Dills, dessert course; Darlene Brand, salad course;
Autumn Williams, team kitchen sous chef.
“Over half of our team was composed of students in their first semester,” commented Chef Scott
Howard, Culinary Arts program chair. “They practiced and used their skills to impress the judges.”
Howard also added, “Chef Holtzer commented on how well they worked together and the passion they
showed for cooking.”
Students from the Interior Design program created fall tablescapes to showcase the culinary creations.
Helmut Holtzer, a Certified Master Chef, was one of the competition judges. Holzer is one of only 68
Certified Master Chefs in the world. Steve Barron and Chris McCook, both Certified Executive Chefs with
the American Academy of Chefs, served as judges with Holtzer. The competition chairman was Mark
Milliron. Students from Le Cordon Bleu-Atlanta also competed. The officials awarded both teams silver
medals.
Culinary Arts courses are taught at the Athens Technical College Walton County Campus and the Athens
Community Career Academy. For additional information on the Culinary Arts program, contact Chef
Scott Howard at (770) 207-4140.
