No. 3 Winthrop EAGLES (16-13, 12-6 BSC)
Rock Hill, S.C. - Winthrop Coliseum
7 p.m.
The Game
The No. 6 seed Flames stop in Rock, Hill, S.C., on Tuesday for the opening round of
the 2010 Advance Auto Parts Big South Championship. Liberty takes on No. 3 Winthrop
inside the Winthrop Coliseum at 7 p.m. The Eagles took both contests against the Flames
this season, winning 65-62 on Jan. 9 and 67-43 on Feb. 4. The Flames hope to end two
streaks by defeating the Eagles, as Liberty is winless in the Winthrop Coliseum since 2004
and has not won a Big South Championship game outside the Vines Center since 2001.
Recent Results
The Flames returned to the Vines Center on Feb. 16, playing host to third-place Radford. Despite Liberty holding the edge the majority of the first half, Radford countered in
the second, edging the Flames 74-69.
Liberty finished out its regular-season home slate against High Point last Saturday.
Kyle Ohman went out in style on Senior Night, achieving a career-high 39 points en route
to a 76-67 win over the Panthers.
Hoping to stay alive in the fight for the No. 4 seed, Liberty stepped into Kimbel Arena
on Thursday to take on conference leading Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers jumped
out to an early lead en route to a 71-48 decision, earning their first regular season conference title since 1991.
Liberty closed out the regular season at Charleston Southern this past Saturday, defeating the Buccaneers 74-61. The Flames were led by Evan Gordon and Jesse Sanders,
who each tied career-highs in scoring with 24 and 16 tallies, respectively. With the victory,
Liberty concluded the regular season with a 15-15 record and a 10-8 posting in conference play.
Watch and Listen to the Flames
There will be a radio broadcast which will air on the Flames Sports Network (flagship
WRVL 88.3 FM) with Nick Pierce providing the play-by-play. Additionally, an Internet audio
broadcast on LibertyFlames.com will be available. There will also be a live video stream
broadcast via the Big South Network, available on BigSouthSports.com.

Entering his first season as head coach of the Flames, Dale Layer is the eighth coach
in program history. Layer returns to Liberty Mountain after previously serving as an assistant coach for the Flames during the 2007-08 season.
This is Layer’s third head coaching stint and first since leaving Colorado State in 2007.
Layer, 50, comes to Liberty most recently from a successful run as an assistant coach at
BIG EAST member and nationally ranked Marquette in 2008-09 where he worked with the
guards. Layer helped the Eagles to a 25-10 record and a second round appearance in the
NCAA Tournament despite lacking the full-time services of All-American Dominic James,
who injured himself near the end of the season.
Dale Layer first served as an assistant at Liberty during the 2007-08 season, helping
the Flames to its best regular season finish since Liberty won the 2004 Big South Championship.
Layer has also demonstrated the ability to develop talent, including former Colorado
State center Jason Smith. The seven-footer scored over 1,500 points for Layer’s Rams
during his three seasons with the program before entering the NBA Draft following his
junior campaign. Due to his development under Layer’s tutelage, Smith was chosen with
the 20th selection of the NBA Draft’s first round by the Miami Heat in 2007. His rights were
traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. When Smith graduated high school he was ranked as
the 276th best player in his class and under Layer developed in three seasons to the 20th
selection in the NBA Draft. Several of Layer’s recruiting classes at Colorado State were
ranked among the top 40 nationally by various recruiting publications.
Layer has a career 284-207 record (17th year) as a head coach, including nine seasons at the helm of Queens University (formally Queens College) in Charlotte, N.C. He
also served as the athletics director while at the school and started the basketball program
in 1989 from scratch at the formerly all women’s institution. Layer’s student-athletes excel
in the classroom too. In Layer’s 16 seasons as a head coach, he has accompanied 43
seniors to be honored on senior night and all 43 earned a college degree, marking 100
percent graduation rate of all players who finish their eligibility under Layer.
After graduating from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1980, Layer started
his coaching career as an assistant under Jim Harley, his former coach. Before moving on
to Queens University, Layer spent seven of the next eight years at Eckerd College except
for the 1982-83 season, when he was an assistant at Eastern Kentucky.
Layer made the jump to Division I in 1998 when Ritchie McKay took the head coaching job at Colorado State and named him to his staff. During McKay’s two seasons with
the Rams, Layer helped lead Colorado State to the NIT Tournament in 1999, where they
beat Mississippi State and Colorado before falling to eventual champion, California.
While with the Rams, Layer had a 103-106 record, including a 17-13 mark in 2007. In
2003, Layer led Colorado State to the Mountain West Conference Championship and its
first NCAA Tournament bid in 13 years, falling to Duke in the first round.

Soaring with the Eagles
Winthrop finished out the regular season with a 16-13 record overall and a 12-6 posting in conference play. After going on a seven game win-streak during the season, the
Eagles dropped three of its last four.
This past Saturday, Winthrop took on Radford inside the Dedmon Center in a matchup
to determine the No. 2 seed in the Big South Championship. Down 52-40 with 9:25 remaining, Radford rallied with a 14-0 run to defeat the Eagles, 54-52. Art Parakhouski became the Highlanders’ hero, connecting on a put back layup with one second remaining
to grab the second-place spot for Radford.
While there is not a dominant scorer within the Winthrop lineup, the Eagles appear to
share their team’s scoring duties. Reggie Middleton leads the way, averaging 9.6 points
per contest, followed by Matt Morgan (9.4 ppg), Mantoris Robinson (8.0 ppg), Charles
Corbin (6.4 ppg), Robbie Dreher (6.2 ppg) and Andy Buechert (6.0 ppg). Buechert is also
the team’s leading rebounder, grabbing 6.7 boards per game.
Liberty-Winthrop Series Notes
Thursday’s contest marks the 43rd meeting between Liberty and Winthrop, with the
Eagles currently holding a 28-14 series lead over the Flames. The two teams first met
during the 1991-92 campaign, Liberty’s inaugural Big South season. The first encounter
occurred on Jan. 30, 1992, as the Flames defeated the Eagles, 72-58. Both teams met
just nine days later on Feb. 8, 1992. Liberty walked away with another victory, besting the
Eagles in the Vines Center, 63-52, capping off a six-game conference winning streak. That
season, Liberty finished with a 22-7 record overall and a 10-4 record in conference play.
In their first meeting with the Eagles this season (Jan. 9), the Flames nearly escaped
Rock Hill, S.C., with a win. Despite Liberty holding a one-point lead in the final minute, the
Eagles were able to find nylon with 27 seconds left, when Andre Jones knocked down a
trey. The downtown dagger ultimately cemented the contest, as the Eagles successfully
defended home court, 65-62.
On Feb. 4, Liberty played host to Winthrop, falling to the Eagles, 67-43. Matt Morgan led the way for the Eagles with 16 points, while Charles Corbin chipped in 15 off the
bench. Despite entering the matchup with a free throw percentage of 72.3 percent, the
Flames shot a season-low 38.1 percent from the charity stripe.
Layer Versus the Big South
Dale Layer holds a 14-11 record all-time against current Big South opponents. Prior to
returning to Liberty, Layer went 2-1 against Gardner-Webb as head coach of the Colorado
State Rams. At the time, the Runnin’ Bulldogs were members of the Atlantic Sun Conference. During his stint at Division II member Queens, Layer garnered a 2-2 record against
the Winthrop Eagles.
Layer Versus the Eagles
During Dale Layer’s tenure at Queens, the Royals matched up with the Eagles on four
occasions. The first meeting took place on Nov. 24, 1990, as the visiting Royals shocked
the Eagles in their season opener in Rock Hill, S.C., 72-64.
Winthrop also opened its season at home against Queens during the 1992-93 campaign on Dec. 2, 1992. The Eagles avenged the loss from the previous meeting, besting
the Royals, 92-84. The following season, the Royals upset the Eagles once again, earning
an 85-77 decision (Dec. 15, 1993).
Layer’s last meeting with Winthrop occurred on Dec. 11, 1994. The Eagles managed
to even the series with Queens, edging out the Royals, 73-70.
Second Time Around
When Layer served as a Liberty assistant during the 2007-08 season, the Flames
went 7-7 in conference play. Liberty posted at least one win over all but one conference
opponent. That season, the Winthrop Eagles took both contests against the Flames, 5548 (Jan. 15, 2008) and 59-50 (Feb. 12, 2008). Liberty managed to sweep one Big South
opponent, as the Flames went 2-0 against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, 78-59 (Jan.
21, 2008) and 66-51 (Feb. 16, 2008).
Half Court Rock at Rock Hill
The last time the Flames played at the Winthrop Coliseum on Jan. 9, freshman guard
Chris Perez threw up a shot just past the half court line, banking it off the glass as the
halftime bell sounded. Perez’s half court heave helped the Flames keep the contest close,
cutting it to four (29-25) at the midway point.

Regular 9-5
Liberty has yet to play an overtime game this season and is currently on a 40 game
streak without an extra period. The last time the Flames played a game that went past
regulation was on Feb. 4, 2009, as Liberty fell to Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, 95-90
in double overtime. Liberty has not gone to overtime inside the Vines Center since squaring off with Radford on Jan. 24, 2009, dropping the double overtime affair, 94-82.
Ohman Shines on Senior Night
Playing his final regular season contest of his collegiate career inside the Vines Center last Saturday, Kyle Ohman went out in style, posting a career-high 39 points and 10
rebounds. Ohman’s point total surpasses his previous career of 38, which he achieved at
Gardner-Webb’s Paul Porter Arena on Feb. 4, 2009.
Ohman’s 39 points on Saturday is the 10th-highest single-game scoring output in
school history, falling just shy of Matt Hildebrand’s Vines Center record of 41, which he set
on Feb. 19, 1994 against Charleston Southern. The senior was also one point away from
becoming the eighth player in school history to score 40 points in a game. The last time
a Flame scored 40 points was on Feb. 21, 2007, when Alex McLean posted the mark at
VMI.
Ohman’s 25 free throw attempts on Saturday set a school record, surpassing the old
mark of 20 held by Peter Aluma and Matt Hildebrand. His 18 makes from the charity stripe
was just one shy of matching Hildebrand’s mark of 19.
Dishing it Out
Flames guard Jesse Sanders is currently third in the Big South in assists per game,
averaging 4.97 per contest. Radford’s Amir Johnson leads the way with 5.74 dimes per
contest. Sanders is also third in the conference in total number of assists with 149. Against
conference opponents, Sanders is currently averaging 4.89 assists per game, with 88
dimes in Big South play this season.
The point guard surpassed the 250-assist mark in Liberty’s 60-57 win over Presbyterian on Feb. 6. Needing only three helpers to reach the milestone, Sanders finished the
night with eight dimes. Sanders is now 14 shy of reaching the 300 mark with 286 career
assists.
Ending the Streak
Senior Kyle Ohman came off the bench in Liberty’s contest against UNC Asheville on
Jan. 16, due to a wrist injury suffered in a matchup with Gardner-Webb on Jan. 13, ending his streak of 55-consecutive starts. Prior to the contest with UNC Asheville, the last
time Ohman entered a game off the bench was on March 1, 2008, as the Flames hosted
Radford in their final game of the 2007-08 regular season.
Grabbing the Boards
In Liberty’s contest against VMI on Jan. 28, the Flames garnered their best rebounding
mark of the season with 53 boards, outrebounding the Keydets by a margin of 28.
Double Triple-Doubles
Kyle Ohman became the third player in school history and the second in three weeks
to record a triple-double when he posted 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists against
VMI on Jan. 2. Ohman’s achievement marks Liberty’s fourth triple-double in school history
and the third in the Division I era.
Three weeks prior to Ohman’s achievement, Jesse Sanders became the first player
in school and Big South history to achieve two career triple-doubles. In the Flames’
matchup against Kentucky Christian on Dec. 12, Sanders finished with 11 points, 10
rebounds and 10 assists. The sophomore grabbed the last board needed to complete
the three-category achievement with just 20 seconds remaining in the contest, following
a missed free throw. Sanders’ previous triple-double occurred on Feb. 9, 2009, when he
posted 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists against Presbyterian. Both of Sanders’
triple-doubles occurred inside the Vines Center.

Points in the Paint
In Liberty’s contest against VMI on Jan. 2, the Flames had success driving to the
basket, scoring a season-high 64 points in the paint. The mark surpassed the previous
season-high of 58, set on Dec. 12 in Liberty’s contest against Kentucky Christian.
1,000-Point Club
Senior Kyle Ohman reached a milestone Jan. 14 against Gardner-Webb, becoming
the 21st member of Liberty’s 1,000-point club. Ohman posted 17 points on the Runnin’
Bulldogs, giving him 1,014 career points. In the process, Ohman surpassed Mike Minnett
and Mike Goad to take the 19th spot on Liberty’s all-time scoring list. With 1,058 career
points, Ohman now needs eight points to grab the 18th position from Mike Coleman.
Ohman leads the Flames with 15.2 points per game and is ninth in the Big South in
scoring. The senior currently has 273 points on the season and was the first Flame to
score over 200 points this season.
Liberty’s 1,000-point club features notable Flames, including Anthony Smith, Peter
Aluma, Ed Vickers, Julius Nwosu, Eric Gordon and others. Three members of the 1,000
point club are also members of Liberty’s 2,000-point club — Karl Hess (2,373), Larry Blair
(2,211) and Bailey Alston (2,115).
Like Father, Like Son
The addition of Evan Gordon to the Flames’ roster this season makes him the program’s first second-generation player. Evan’s father, Eric Gordon, Sr., suited up for the
Flames from 1981-1984. The three-year letterwinner is currently No. 16 on Liberty’s all
time scoring list with 1,154 points.
While Gordon is the first second-generation Flame, he is not the first player whose
father is also in the Liberty men’s basketball annals. Mark Manley, who played three seasons with the Flames between 1998 and 2002, is the son of Dan Manley, the program’s
first head coach (1973-77).
Watch List Week
The Nov. 17 contest against Clemson marked Liberty’s first encounter with a member
of the 2009-10 Naismith Award Watch List this season, as Trevor Booker entered the
Vines Center, collecting 12 points and 12 rebounds. The second meeting with a watch
list member took place on Nov. 22, when the Flames traveled to South Bend, Ind., for a
match-up with Notre Dame’s Luke Harangody. The Fighting Irish’s center posted 32 points
and nine rebounds on the night.
The list, which originally consists of 50 of the top players in the country was recently
narrowed down to 30 players on Feb. 24, with Booker and Harangody remiaining as two
of the 30 nominees. Before a winner is selected, the field will be downsized again to four
finalists in March. In addition to making the list, Harangody is also nominated for the 200910 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.
All-American Brothers
Two members of the 2009-10 Flames roster are younger brothers of 2008 All-Americans. Eric Gordon, Jr., is the older brother to freshman guard Evan Gordon. The elder
Gordon spent one season at Indiana and was Third Team All-America member in his lone
season with the Hoosiers. Gordon was picked seventh overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2008 NBA Draft and averaged 16.1 ppg his rookie season in the league. He is
currently averaging 18.9 ppg with the team.
Sophomore point guard Jesse Sanders’ older brother Thomas received an honorable mention on the 2008 All-America listing. The elder Sanders played four seasons
at Gardner-Webb prior to the team joining the Big South. In his senior season with the
Runnin’ Bulldogs, he was named 2008 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year. He currently plays
professionally in Spain.
Foreign Born
Freshman forward Patrick Konan, a native of the Ivory Coast, is the first Flame hailing
from outside the United States since the 2004-05 season, when Liberty’s roster featured
three foreign-born players ― power forward Leo Lightbourne (Andros, Bahamas), guard
John Clarke (Freeport, Bahamas) and Glyn Turner (Auckland, New Zealand).
Standing out among the trio was Lightbourne, who was named to the 2005 Big South
second team his senior season. After finishing his collegiate career at Liberty, Lightbourne
began playing professionally in Europe.
