The Game
The Liberty men’s basketball team returns to the Vines Center on Tuesday to host
third-place Radford. The contest marks the 56th meeting between the two squads with
Radford holding a 31-24 edge over Liberty. Liberty took the first contest against the
Highlanders this season, leaving Radford’s Demon Center with a 60-55 win on Jan. 23.
Tuesday’s matchup will be televised nationally on ESPN FullCourt, as the Flames look to
record their fourth conference sweep of the season. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
Recent Results
On Feb. 4, Liberty played host to Winthrop, falling to the Eagles, 67-43. Two days
later, the Flames bounced back, defeating Presbyterian, 60-57, inside the Vines Center.
The game marked another big night for freshman forward Antwan Burrus, as he finished
with 18 points and nine rebounds.
This past Thursday, the Flames traveled to Asheville, N.C., to take on UNC Asheville.
With fourth place on the line, the Flames found themselves down by 18 in the second half,
but rallied back to cut it to a pair in the closing minutes. In the end, UNC Asheville held off
the relentless Flames, earning the 75-72 decision.
Liberty remained in the Tar Heel State on Saturday, squaring off with Gardner-Webb.
Jeremy Anderson and Evan Gordon led the Flames’ offensive attack, scoring 17 points
apiece. Down by six with 8:03 remaining in the contest, Liberty took advantage of a seven
and a half minute scoreless drought from the field by the Runnin’ Bulldogs to record its
first-ever win inside Paul Porter Arena, 69-61.
Watch and Listen to the Flames
Tuesday’s contest will be televised on the Flames Sports Network with Ray Jones
providing the play-by-play and Tim Scarborough adding color commentary. There will be
a radio broadcast which will air on the Flames Sports Network (flagship WRVL 88.3 FM)
with Nick Pierce providing the play-by-play. Additionally, an Internet audio broadcast on
LibertyFlames.com will be available. There will also be a live video stream of the broadcast via the Big South Network, available on BigSouthSports.com. Flames fans nationwide can also catch the contest on ESPN FullCourt and ESPN360.com.

Entering his first season as head coach of the Flames, Dale Layer is the eighth coach
in program history. Layer returns to Liberty Mountain after previously serving as an assistant coach for the Flames during the 2007-08 season.
This is Layer’s third head coaching stint and first since leaving Colorado State in 2007.
Layer, 50, comes to Liberty most recently from a successful run as an assistant coach at
BIG EAST member and nationally ranked Marquette in 2008-09 where he worked with the
guards. Layer helped the Eagles to a 25-10 record and a second round appearance in the
NCAA Tournament despite lacking the full-time services of All-American Dominic James,
who injured himself near the end of the season.
Dale Layer first served as an assistant at Liberty during the 2007-08 season, helping
the Flames to its best regular season finish since Liberty won the 2004 Big South Championship.
Layer has also demonstrated the ability to develop talent, including former Colorado
State center Jason Smith. The seven-footer scored over 1,500 points for Layer’s Rams
during his three seasons with the program before entering the NBA Draft following his
junior campaign. Due to his development under Layer’s tutelage, Smith was chosen with
the 20th selection of the NBA Draft’s first round by the Miami Heat in 2007. His rights were
traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. When Smith graduated high school he was ranked as
the 276th best player in his class and under Layer developed in three seasons to the 20th
selection in the NBA Draft. Several of Layer’s recruiting classes at Colorado State were
ranked among the top 40 nationally by various recruiting publications.
Layer has a career 282-205 record (17th year) as a head coach, including nine seasons at the helm of Queens University (formally Queens College) in Charlotte, N.C. He
also served as the athletics director while at the school and started the basketball program
in 1989 from scratch at the formerly all women’s institution. Layer’s student-athletes excel
in the classroom too. In Layer’s 16 seasons as a head coach, he has accompanied 43
seniors to be honored on senior night and all 43 earned a college degree, marking 100
percent graduation rate of all players who finish their eligibility under Layer.
After graduating from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1980, Layer started
his coaching career as an assistant under Jim Harley, his former coach. Before moving on
to Queens University, Layer spent seven of the next eight years at Eckerd College except
for the 1982-83 season, when he was an assistant at Eastern Kentucky.
Layer made the jump to Division I in 1998 when Ritchie McKay took the head coaching job at Colorado State and named him to his staff. During McKay’s two seasons with
the Rams, Layer helped lead Colorado State to the NIT Tournament in 1999, where they
beat Mississippi State and Colorado before falling to eventual champion, California.
While with the Rams, Layer had a 103-106 record, including a 17-13 mark in 2007. In
2003, Layer led Colorado State to the Mountain West Conference Championship and its
first NCAA Tournament bid in 13 years, falling to Duke in the first round.

A Look at the Highlanders
Heading into Saturday’s contest, Radford holds a 14-11 record on the season and
a 10-5 posting in conference play. Since their first meeting with Flames this season, the
Highlanders have gone 4-2 in Big South play.
Coming off an overtime win against Charleston Southern this past Thursday, the
Highlanders hosted conference leader Coastal Carolina on Saturday. Art Parakhouski
recorded 16 points and nine boards in the contest, followed by Lazar Trifunovic, who finished with 13 tallies and 9 rebounds to match the center. However, the Highlanders were
unable to defend home court against the Big South’s best, falling narrowly to the Chanticleers, 52-51.
Parakhouski is averaging a double-double on the season, leading the Highlanders in
scoring and rebounding with 21.5 points and 13.2 rebounds. The center is also Radford’s
leading shot blocker with 60 this season. Radford’s point guard Amir Johnson is currently
the Big South’s assist leader, averaging 5.7 dimes per game.
Liberty-Radford Series Notes
Saturday’s matchup marks the 56th meeting between Liberty and Radford, with the
Highlanders holding a 31-24 edge over the Flames in the all-time series. The Commonwealth clash began on Jan. 28, 1975 during Liberty’s days as a member of the National
Christian Collegiate Athletic Association. Liberty hosted the inaugural meeting, defeating
Radford, 99-85.
The Flames and Highlanders split the season series during the 2008-09 campaign,
with each team picking up a win on the road. The first meeting took place inside the Vines
Center on Jan. 24, 2009, resulting in a double overtime thriller. Seth Curry led the way for
the Flames with 30 points, followed by Anthony Smith and Kyle Ohman, who each finished
with 18. Smith also achieved a double-double, adding 12 rebounds to his scoring performance.
Unfortunately, the Flames were unable to seal up the contest, as Radford pulled
away in the second overtime period, earning a 94-82 decision. Five Highlanders reached
double-digit scoring figures in the contest — Artsiom Parakhouski (22), Kenny Thomas
(21), Amir Johnson (16), Joey Lynch-Flohr (13), Chris McEachin (10). Parakhouski and
Thomas also finished with double-doubles, grabbing 16 and 12 boards, respectively.
The Flames avenged the loss in the Dedmon Center the following month. Curry and
Smith each scored 25 and 24 points apiece, as Liberty ended the regular season on Feb.
28 with a 92-85 victory.
Liberty took the opening contest against the Highlanders this season, edging Radford inside the Demon Center on Jan. 23, 60-55. Jesse Sanders and Evan Gordon each
finished with 16 points, while Radford’s Art Parakhouski recorded a double-double with a
game-high 26 points and 15 boards.
Layer Versus the Big South
Dale Layer holds a 12-9 record all-time against current Big South opponents. Prior to
returning to Liberty, Layer went 2-1 against Gardner-Webb as head coach of the Colorado
State Rams. At the time, the Runnin’ Bulldogs were members of the Atlantic Sun Conference. During his stint at Division II member Queens, Layer garnered a 2-2 record against
the Winthrop Eagles.
Second Time Around
When Layer served as a Liberty assistant during the 2007-08 season, the Flames
went 7-7 in conference play. Liberty posted at least one win over all but one conference
opponent. That season, the Winthrop Eagles took both contests against the Flames, 5548 (Jan. 15, 2008) and 59-50 (Feb. 12, 2008). Liberty managed to sweep one Big South
opponent, as they went 2-0 against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, 78-59 (Jan. 21,
2008) and 66-51 (Feb. 16, 2008).
Liberty split in its meetings with Radford that season, narrowly losing to the Highlanders in the first meeting on Feb. 2, 2008 in the Dedmon Center, 89-88. Martell McDuffy and
Amir Johnson led the way for the Highlanders with 22 and 21 points respectively. Four
Flames finished in double scoring figures in the contest — B.J. Jenkins (21), TeeJay Bannister (19), Jeremy Anderson (14) and Anthony Smith (10).
The Flames hosted the Highlanders on March 1, 2008, in the regular season finale,
besting Radford 78-71. Anthony Smith netted 29 points in the win, while B.J. Jenkins
and Kyle Ohman each chipped in 18 and 13 points respectively. Four Highlanders also
achieved double digits in scoring — Joey Lynch-Flohr (19), Amir Johnson (15), Eric Hall
(14) and Martell McDuffy (13).

Barefoot for Bare Feet
The Big South Conference, in affiliation with Samaritan’s Feet, is doing its part to bring
attention to the 300 million children worldwide who are subject to disease, infection and
death due to not owning a single pair of shoes. Throughout the remainder of the 2009-10
season, Big South coaches in both men’s and women’s basketball will coach games barefoot in selected game. During Tuesday’s contest, head coach Dale Layer will walk the sidelines shoeless in support of the Barefoot for Bare Feet campaign.
Regular 9-5
Liberty has yet to play an overtime game this season and is currently on a 37 game streak
without an extra period. The last time the Flames played a game that went past regulation
was on Feb. 4, 2009, as Liberty fell to Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, 95-90. Liberty has
not gone to overtime inside the Vines Center since squaring off with Radford on Jan. 24,
2009, dropping the double overtime affair, 94-82.
Dishing it Out
Flames’ guard Jesse Sanders is currently third in the Big South in assists per game,
averaging 5.08 per contest. Radford’s Amir Johnson leads the way with 5.70 dimes per
contest. Sanders is also third in the conference in total number of assists with 132. Against
conference opponents, Sanders is currently averaging 5.07 assists per game, with 71 dimes
in Big South play this season.
The point guard surpassed the 250-assist mark in Liberty’s 60-57 win over Presbyterian
on Feb. 6. Needing only three helpers to reach the milestone, Sanders finished the night with
eight dimes.
Flames in February
Heading into Tuesday’s matchup with Radford, the Flames hold a 166-150 all-time record in the month of February. Liberty’s best posting in the second month of the year occurred during the 1996-97 season, when the Flames went 9-1 in February.

with 15 boards. The mark surpasses the point guard’s previous personal best of 11, which
he achieved on two occasions this season (Nov. 27 against Mississippi Valley State and

Career-High Tie
In Liberty’s contest against Radford on Jan. 23, Jesse Sanders scored a seasonhigh 16 points, hitting five-of-eight shots from the field and five-of-six from the charity

Tournament quarterfinal against matchup against James Madison last season (March 23,
2009).
Ending the Streak
Senior Kyle Ohman came off the bench in Liberty’s contest against UNC Asheville on
Jan. 16, due to a wrist injury suffered in a matchup with Gardner-Webb, ending his streak
of 55-consecutive starts. Prior to the contest with UNC Asheville, the last time Ohman entered a game off the bench was on March 1, 2008, as the Flames hosted Radford in their
final game of the 2007-08 regular season.

Double Triple-Doubles
Kyle Ohman became the third player in school history and the second in three weeks
to record a triple-double when he posted 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists against
VMI on Jan. 2. Ohman’s achievement marks Liberty’s fourth triple-double in school history
and the third in the Division I era.
Three weeks prior to Ohman’s achievement, Jesse Sanders became the first player
in school and Big South history to achieve two career triple-doubles. In the Flames’
matchup against Kentucky Christian on Dec. 12, Sanders finished with 11 points, 10
rebounds and 10 assists. The sophomore grabbed the last board needed to complete
the three-category achievement with just 20 seconds remaining in the contest, following
a missed free throw. Sanders’ previous triple-double occurred on Feb. 9, 2009, when he
posted 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists against Presbyterian. Both of Sanders’
triple-doubles occurred inside the Vines Center.

Points in the Paint
In Liberty’s contest against VMI on Jan. 2, the Flames had success driving to the
basket, scoring a season-high 64 points in the paint. The mark surpassed the previous
season-high of 58, set on Dec. 12 in Liberty’s contest against Kentucky Christian.
1,000 Point Club
Senior Kyle Ohman reached a milestone Jan. 14 against Gardner-Webb, becoming
the 21st member of Liberty’s 1,000-point club. Ohman posted 17 points on the Runnin’
Bulldogs, giving him 1,014 career points. In the process, Ohman surpassed Mike Minnett
and Mike Goad to take the 19th spot on Liberty’s all-time scoring list. He now needs 52
points to grab the 18th position from Mike Coleman.
Ohman leads the Flames with 15.2 points per game and is ninth in the Big South in
scoring. The senior currently has 273 points on the season and was the first Flame to
score over 200 points this season.
Liberty’s 1,000-point club features notable Flames, including Anthony Smith, Peter
Aluma, Ed Vickers, Julius Nwosu, Eric Gordon and others. Three members of the 1,000
point club are also members of Liberty’s 2,000-point club — Karl Hess (2,373), Larry Blair
(2,211) and Bailey Alston (2,115).
Watch List Week
The Nov. 17 contest against Clemson marked Liberty’s first encounter with a member
of the 2009-10 Naismith Award Watch List this season, as Trevor Booker entered the
Vines Center, collecting 12 points and 12 rebounds. The second meeting with a watch
list member took place on Nov. 22, when the Flames traveled to South Bend, Ind., for a
match-up with Notre Dame’s Luke Harangody. The Fighting Irish’s center posted 32 points
and nine rebounds on the night.
The Naismith Award Watch List consists of the nation’s top 50 players, who are selected based on their performances last season and expectations heading into the 200910 campaign. The list will be narrowed down to 30 players in February and four finalists in
March. In addition to making the list, Harangody is also nominated for the 2009-10 Lowe’s
Senior CLASS Award.
Like Father, Like Son
The addition of Evan Gordon to the Flames’ roster this season makes him the program’s first second-generation player. Evan’s father, Eric Gordon, Sr., suited up for the
Flames from 1981-1984. The three-year letterwinner is currently No. 16 on Liberty’s all
time scoring list with 1,154 points.
While Gordon is the first second-generation Flame, he is not the first player whose
father is also in the Liberty men’s basketball annals. Mark Manley, who played three seasons with the Flames between 1998 and 2002, is the son of Dan Manley, the program’s
first head coach (1973-77).
All-American Brothers
Two members of the 2009-10 Flames roster are younger brothers of 2008 All-Americans. Eric Gordon, Jr., is the older brother to freshman guard Evan Gordon. The elder
Gordon spent one season at Indiana and was Third Team All-America member in his lone
season with the Hoosiers. Gordon was picked seventh overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2008 NBA Draft and averaged 16.1 ppg his rookie season in the league. He is
currently averaging 18.9 ppg with the team.
Sophomore point guard Jesse Sanders’ older brother Thomas received an honorable mention on the 2008 All-America listing. The elder Sanders played four seasons
at Gardner-Webb prior to the team joining the Big South. In his senior season with the
Runnin’ Bulldogs, he was named 2008 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year. He currently plays
professionally in Spain.
Foreign Born
Freshman forward Patrick Konan, a native of the Ivory Coast, is the first Flame hailing
from outside the United States since the 2004-05 season, when Liberty’s roster featured
three foreign-born players ― power forward Leo Lightbourne (Andros, Bahamas), guard
John Clarke (Freeport, Bahamas) and Glyn Turner (Auckland, New Zealand).
Standing out among the trio was Lightbourne, who was named to the 2005 Big South
second team his senior season. After finishing his collegiate career at Liberty, Lightbourne
began playing professionally in Europe.
