The Game
The Liberty men’s basketball team returns to the Vines Center Thursday to host Winthrop. The contest marks the 42nd meeting between the two squads, with the Eagles leading the all-time series, 27-14. Winthrop took the first contest against Liberty this season,
holding off the Flames inside the Winthrop Coliseum, 65-62, on Jan. 9. Tipoff for Thursday’s rematch inside the Vines Center is set for 8 p.m. The matchup is the second half of
a double header which features a women’s hoops contest between the Lady Flames and
North Carolina Central at 5 p.m.
Recent Results
Hoping to control the third spot in the conference, the Flames played host to UNC
Asheville, on Jan. 16. Throughout the contest, Liberty rallied on numerous occasions to
make it a one-possession ball game, but was unable to grab the lead in the second half,
ultimately falling to the Bulldogs, 74-70.
The Flames traveled to High Point, N.C., on Jan. 21, taking on the High Point Panthers. Looking to finish the night in third place in the Big South standings, the Flames
played without leading scorer Kyle Ohman, falling, 81-53.
Liberty remained on the road on Jan. 23, making a stop in Radford, Va., to face
the second place Radford Highlanders. The Flames kept it close with the Highlanders
throughout the contest, before taking the lead with 9:29 remaining, en route to a 60-55
win.
The Flames returned to the Vines Center on Jan. 28, hosting fellow Commonwealth
competitor VMI. Antwan Burrus finished with a career-high 20 points and 13 rebounds,
while Jesse Sanders also posted a career-high 15 boards, leading the Flames past the
Keydets, 91-73.

Entering his first season as head coach of the Flames, Dale Layer is the eighth coach
in program history. Layer returns to Liberty Mountain after previously serving as an assistant coach for the Flames during the 2007-08 season.
This will be Layer’s third head coaching stint and first since leaving Colorado State
in 2007. Layer, 50, comes to Liberty most recently from a successful run as an assistant
coach at BIG EAST member and nationally ranked Marquette this past season where he
worked with the guards. Layer helped the Eagles to a 25-10 record and a second round
appearance in the NCAA Tournament despite lacking the full-time services of All-American Dominic James, who injured himself near the end of the season.
Dale Layer first served as an assistant at Liberty during the 2007-08 season, helping
the Flames to its best regular season finish since Liberty won the 2004 Big South Championship.
Layer has also demonstrated the ability to develop talent, including former Colorado
State center Jason Smith. The seven-footer scored over 1,500 points for Layer’s Rams
during his three seasons with the program before entering the NBA Draft following his
junior campaign. Due to his development under Layer’s tutelage, Smith was chosen with
the 20th selection of the NBA Draft’s first round by the Miami Heat in 2007. His rights were
traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. When Smith graduated high school he was ranked as
the 276th best player in his class and under Layer developed in three seasons to the 20th
selection in the NBA Draft. Several of Layer’s recruiting classes at Colorado State were
ranked among the top 40 nationally by various recruiting publications.
Layer has a career 281-204 record (17th year) as a head coach, including nine seasons at the helm of Queens University (formally Queens College) in Charlotte, N.C. He
also served as the athletics director while at the school and started the basketball program
in 1989 from scratch at the formerly all women’s institution. Layer’s student-athletes excel
in the classroom too. In Layer’s 16 seasons as a head coach, he has accompanied 43
seniors to be honored on senior night and all 43 earned a college degree, marking 100
percent graduation rate of all players who finish their eligibility under Layer.
After graduating from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1980, Layer started
his coaching career as an assistant under Jim Harley, his former coach. Before moving on
to Queens University, Layer spent seven of the next eight years at Eckerd College except
for the 1982-83 season, when he was an assistant at Eastern Kentucky.
Layer made the jump to Division I in 1998 when Ritchie McKay took the head coaching job at Colorado State and named him to his staff. During McKay’s two seasons with
the Rams, Layer helped lead Colorado State to the NIT Tournament in 1999, where they
beat Mississippi State and Colorado before falling to eventual champion, California.
While with the Rams, Layer had a 103-106 record, including a 17-13 mark in 2007. In
2003, Layer led Colorado State to the Mountain West Conference Championship and its
first NCAA Tournament bid in 13 years, falling to Duke in the first round.

Soaring with the Eagles
Winthrop enters Thursday’s contest with an 11-10 record overall and a 7-4 posting in
conference play. Since its previous meeting against Liberty on Jan. 9, Winthrop has gone
4-1 in the Big South and is currently riding a three-game win-streak.
The Eagles are flying high after a win over conference leader Coastal Carolina this
past Saturday, successfully defending their home court against the Chanticleers, 67-64.
Reggie Middleton and Mantoris Robinson led the offensive attack for Winthrop, scoring 16
and 15 points, respectively. The Eagles shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the field, while
holding the Chanticleers to 37.3 percent (22-of-59).
While there is not a dominant scorer within the Winthrop lineup, the Eagles appear
to share their team’s scoring duties. Middleton leads the way, averaging 8.6 points per
contest, followed by Matt Morgan (7.9 ppg), Robinson (7.8 ppg), Andre Jones (6.9 ppg),
Andy Buechert (6.8 ppg) and Robbie Dreher (6.3 ppg). Buechert is also the team’s leading
rebounder, grabbing 7.0 boards per game.
Liberty-Winthrop Series Notes
Thursday’s contest marks the 42nd meeting between Liberty and Winthrop, with the
Eagles currently holding a 27-14 series lead over the Flames. The two teams first met
during the 1991-92 campaign, Liberty’s inaugural Big South season. The first encounter
occurred on Jan. 30, 1992, as the Flames defeated the Eagles, 72-58. Both teams met
just nine days later on Feb. 8, 1992. Liberty walked away with another victory, besting the
Eagles in the Vines Center, 63-52, capping off a six-game conference winning streak. That
season, Liberty finished with a 22-7 record overall and a 10-4 record in conference play.
Last season, the Flames nearly kicked off 2009 with a road win against the Eagles,
but critical misses at the free throw line helped Winthrop hold off Liberty in the Winthrop
Coliseum, 59-57, on Jan. 3, 2009. Anthony Smith and Seth Curry led the way for the
Flames, finishing with 24 and 18 points, respectively. Three Eagles managed to reach
double figures in scoring — Byron Fasion (16), Charles Corbin (12) and Mantoris Robinson (10).
The following month, Liberty avenged the loss, defeating the Eagles inside the Vines,
57-47, on Feb. 7. Seth Curry netted 16 tallies in the contest, followed by Kyle Ohman, who
finished with 11. Anthony Smith and Jesse Sanders posted solid numbers on the glass,
grabbing eight and seven rebounds, respectively.
In their first meeting with the Eagles this season (Jan. 9), the Flames nearly escaped
Rock Hill, S.C., with a win. Despite Liberty holding a one-point lead in the final minute, the
Eagles were able to find nylon with 27 seconds left, when Andre Jones knocked down a
trey. The downtown dagger ultimately cemented the contest, as the Eagles successfully
defended home court, 65-62.
Layer Versus the Big South
Dale Layer holds a 10-7 record all-time against current Big South opponents. Prior to
returning to Liberty, Layer went 2-1 against Gardner-Webb as head coach of the Colorado
State Rams. At the time, the Runnin’ Bulldogs were members of the Atlantic Sun Conference. During his stint at Division II member Queens, Layer garnered a 2-2 record against
the Winthrop Eagles.
Layer Versus the Eagles
During Dale Layer’s tenure at Queens, the Royals matched up with the Eagles on four
occasions. The first meeting took place on Nov. 24, 1990, as the visiting Royals shocked
the Eagles in their season opener in Rock Hill, S.C., 72-64.
Winthrop also opened its season at home against Queens during the 1992-93 campaign on Dec. 2, 1992. The Eagles avenged the loss from the previous meeting, besting
the Royals, 92-84. The following season, the Royals upset the Eagles once again, earning
an 85-77 decision (Dec. 15, 1993).
Layer’s last meeting with Winthrop occurred on Dec. 11, 1994. The Eagles managed
to even the series with Queens, edging out the Royals, 73-70.
Second Time Around
When Layer served as a Liberty assistant during the 2007-08 season, the Flames
went 7-7 in conference play. Liberty posted at least one win over all but one conference
opponent. That season, the Winthrop Eagles took both contests against the Flames, 5548 (Jan. 15, 2008) and 59-50 (Feb. 12, 2008). Liberty managed to sweep one Big South
opponent, as the Flames went 2-0 against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, 78-59 (Jan.
21, 2008) and 66-51 (Feb. 16, 2008).

Career-High Night
Jesse Sanders set a new career-high in rebounds last Thursday versus VMI, finishing
with 15 boards. The mark surpasses the point guard’s previous personal best of 11, which
he achieved on two occasions this season (Nov. 27 against Mississippi Valley State and Jan.
2 against VMI).
Dishing it Out
Flames’ guard Jesse Sanders is currently third in the Big South in assists per game,
averaging 4.82 per contest. Radford’s Amir Johnson leads the way with 5.55 dimes per contest. Sanders is also third in the conference in total number of assists with 111.
Against conference opponents, Sanders is currently averaging 4.5 assists per game,
with 45 dimes in Big South play this season.
Big Night for Burrus
In Liberty’s matchup against VMI last Thursday, Antwan Burrus finished out the night
with a career-high 20 points and 13 rebounds, marking the first 20-10 performance and the
second double-double of his collegiate career. The freshman forward also chipped in six
assists and one blocked shot during the contest. Heading into Thursday’s contest, Burrus is
averaging 6.7 points and 3.9 boards per game.
Flames in February
Heading into Thursday’s match-up with Winthrop, the Flames hold a 164-148 all-time
record in the month of February. Liberty’s best posting in the second month of the year occurred during the 1996-97 season, when the Flames went 9-1 in February.
A Look at Last Season
Through its first 10 games in conference play, Liberty sits in fifth place with a 6-4 record.
Liberty’s performance mirrors that of last season, as the Flames were 6-4 after their first 10
contests during the 2008-09 campaign.

Career-High Tie
In Liberty’s contest against Radford on Jan. 23, Jesse Sanders scored a seasonhigh 16 points, hitting five-of-eight shots from the field and five-of-six from the charity
stripe. The mark also ties the guard’s career high for points set in Liberty’s CollegeInsider
Tournament quarterfinal against matchup against James Madison last season (March 23,
2009). Sanders’ currently leads the team in boards, averaging 6.6 per contest.
Ending the Streak
Senior Kyle Ohman came off the bench in Liberty’s contest against UNC Asheville on
Jan. 16, due to a wrist injury suffered in a matchup with Gardner-Webb, ending his streak
of 55-consecutive starts. Prior to the contest with UNC Asheville, the last time Ohman entered a game off the bench was on March 1, 2008, as the Flames hosted Radford in their
final game of the 2007-08 regular season.
First Double-Double
Earning his first collegiate start in Liberty’s 77-67 win over Presbyterian, Antwan Burrus proceeded to garner a double-double, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The
dual-category achievement is the first of his collegiate career.
Burrus was the first Flame to earn weekly conference honors this season. The forward
was tabbed the Big South Freshman of the Week on Dec. 14 for his 15-point, five-rebound
performance against Kentucky Christian (Dec. 12). He is currently averaging 5.4 points
and 2.9 boards per game.
Flames in January
Last Thursday’s win against VMI gives the Flames a 160-164 record all-time in the
month of January. The Flames finished the month with a 5-3 record this season. Liberty’s best January showing occurred during the 1991-92 season, when the Flames went
8-2. That season, Liberty finished with a 22-7 record.
Points in the Paint
In Liberty’s contest against VMI on Jan. 2, the Flames had success driving to the
basket, scoring a season-high 64 points in the paint. The mark surpassed the previous
season-high of 58, set on Dec. 12 in Liberty’s contest against Kentucky Christian.
Grabbing the Boards
In Liberty’s contest against VMI on Jan. 2, the Flames garnered their best rebounding mark of the season with 50 boards, outrebounding the Keydets by a margin of
28.
Double Triple-Doubles
Kyle Ohman became the third player in school history and the second in three weeks
to record a triple-double when he posted 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists against
VMI on Jan. 2. Ohman’s achievement marks Liberty’s fourth triple-double in school history
and the third in the Division I era.
Three weeks prior to Ohman’s achievement, Jesse Sanders became the first player
in school and Big South history to achieve two career triple-doubles. In the Flames’
matchup against Kentucky Christian on Dec. 12, Sanders finished with 11 points, 10
rebounds and 10 assists. The sophomore grabbed the last board needed to complete
the three-category achievement with just 20 seconds remaining in the contest, following
a missed free throw. Sanders’ previous triple-double occurred on Feb. 9, 2009, when he
posted 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists against Presbyterian. Both of Sanders’
triple-doubles occurred inside the Vines Center.

1,000 Point Club
Senior Kyle Ohman reached a milestone Jan. 14 against Gardner-Webb, becoming
the 21st member of Liberty’s 1,000-point club. Ohman posted 17 points on the Runnin’
Bulldogs, giving him 1,014 career points. In the process, Ohman surpassed Mike Minnett
and Mike Goad to take the 19th spot on Liberty’s all-time scoring list. He now needs 52
points to grab the 18th position from Mike Coleman.
Ohman leads the Flames with 15.2 points per game and is ninth in the Big South in
scoring. The senior currently has 273 points on the season and was the first Flame to
score over 200 points this season.
Liberty’s 1,000-point club features notable Flames, including Anthony Smith, Peter
Aluma, Ed Vickers, Julius Nwosu, Eric Gordon and others. Three members of the 1,000
point club are also members of Liberty’s 2,000-point club — Karl Hess (2,373), Larry Blair
(2,211) and Bailey Alston (2,115).
Watch List Week
The Nov. 17 contest against Clemson marked Liberty’s first encounter with a member
of the 2009-10 Naismith Award Watch List this season, as Trevor Booker entered the
Vines Center, collecting 12 points and 12 rebounds. The second meeting with a watch
list member took place on Nov. 22, when the Flames traveled to South Bend, Ind., for a
match-up with Notre Dame’s Luke Harangody. The Fighting Irish’s center posted 32 points
and nine rebounds on the night.
The Naismith Award Watch List consists of the nation’s top 50 players, who are selected based on their performances last season and expectations heading into the 200910 campaign. The list will be narrowed down to 30 players in February and four finalists in
March. In addition to making the list, Harangody is also nominated for the 2009-10 Lowe’s
Senior CLASS Award.
Like Father, Like Son
The addition of Evan Gordon to the Flames’ roster this season makes him the program’s first second-generation player. Evan’s father, Eric Gordon, Sr., suited up for the
Flames from 1981-1984. The three-year letterwinner is currently No. 16 on Liberty’s all
time scoring list with 1,154 points.
While Gordon is the first second-generation Flame, he is not the first player whose
father is also in the Liberty men’s basketball annals. Mark Manley, who played three seasons with the Flames between 1998 and 2002, is the son of Dan Manley, the program’s
first head coach (1973-77).
All-American Brothers
Two members of the 2009-10 Flames roster are younger brothers of 2008 All-Americans. Eric Gordon, Jr., is the older brother to freshman guard Evan Gordon. The elder
Gordon spent one season at Indiana and was Third Team All-America member in his lone
season with the Hoosiers. Gordon was picked seventh overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2008 NBA Draft and averaged 16.1 ppg his rookie season in the league. He is
currently averaging 18.9 ppg with the team.
Sophomore point guard Jesse Sanders’ older brother Thomas received an honorable mention on the 2008 All-America listing. The elder Sanders played four seasons
at Gardner-Webb prior to the team joining the Big South. In his senior season with the
Runnin’ Bulldogs, he was named 2008 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year. He currently plays
professionally in Spain.
Foreign Born
Freshman forward Patrick Konan, a native of the Ivory Coast, is the first Flame hailing
from outside the United States since the 2004-05 season, when Liberty’s roster featured
three foreign-born players ― power forward Leo Lightbourne (Andros, Bahamas), guard
John Clarke (Freeport, Bahamas) and Glyn Turner (Auckland, New Zealand).
Standing out among the trio was Lightbourne, who was named to the 2005 Big South
second team his senior season. After finishing his collegiate career at Liberty, Lightbourne
began playing professionally in Europe.
