The Game
Liberty (7-3, 0-0 Big South) will open defense of its Big South Conference title Saturday at 3 p.m., when the Lady Flames travel to Gardner-Webb (11-2, 0-0 Big South).
The matinee at Paul Porter Arena is a rematch of the 2009 Big South Championship title
game, which saw Liberty edge Gardner-Webb, 51-50.
Last Time Out
No. 21/23 Virginia used a late 8-0 run to pull away from Liberty in a back-and-forth
Marriott Cavalier Classic championship game, Tuesday night at John Paul Jones Arena.
The Cavaliers held off the Lady Flames, 63-54, after turning 30 Liberty turnovers into 35
points. Avery Warley made the all-tournament team after a 12-point, eight-rebound effort.
On Deck
Liberty will return to the Vines Center Tuesday evening for its first home game in a
month. The Lady Flames will host defending MEAC champion North Carolina A&T at 7
p.m., beginning a season-long five-game homestand.
Lady Flames On The Air
All Lady Flames basketball games may be heard LIVE on WWMC 90.9 FM “The
Light.” Jamie Hall, celebrating his 16th year of broadcasting Lady Flames basketball, will
once again be handling the courtside play-by-play duties for road games. Nick Pierce and
Josh Wood will serve as the primary commentators for home contests.
Lady Flames On TV
For the seventh season in a row, the Flames Sports Network (FSN) plans to broadcast all 15 home women’s basketball games. FSN’s regular announcing team will consist
of Ray Jones on play-by-play and Jamie Hall on color.

Liberty head women’s basketball coach Carey Green, in his 11th season with the
Lady Flames, has instilled quite a winning tradition during his tenure at the institution. His
teams have averaged more than 23 victories per year, putting his name alongside the nation’s premier women’s basketball coaches.
Green has accumulated a 244-80 record on the Liberty bench, good for a winning
percentage of .753. He currently ranks ninth all-time among NCAA Division I women’s
basketball coaches in winning percentage, ahead of renowned coaching names like Rutgers’ Vivian Stringer, LSU’s Van Chancellor and North Carolina’s Sylvia Hatchell.
More importantly, Liberty has won the Big South Tournament title and advanced to the
NCAA Tournament nine times with Green as head coach. Liberty has totaled 23 or more
victories during eight of those years, including the 2004-05 season, which saw the Lady
Flames reach the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history.
Green has actually been to the postseason on 21 occasions as a women’s basketball
coach, a span which includes a dozen years as an assistant coach at Clemson. In all but
one of the 21 appearances, he has experienced the NCAA Tournament.
Last season, Green earned his unprecedented fifth Big South Coach of the Year
award, after guiding a team decimated by ACL injuries to a 24-9 record and its 12th NCAA
Tournament appearance in the last 13 years. The Lady Flames also won the Hokie Hardwood Classic, claiming their first-ever victory over Virginia Tech in the tournament championship game.
At season’s end, Green saw his second player selected in the WNBA Draft, as Megan
Frazee was taken in the second round by the San Antonio Silver Stars. She then played
part of her rookie season alongside 2005 Liberty alum Katie (Feenstra) Mattera in San
Antonio.
Rebounding and defense have always been staples of Green-coached teams, and
the 2008-09 Lady Flames were no exception. Liberty outrebounded opponents by an average of 12.7 caroms per game, ranking second nationally. The Lady Flames have now
been listed among the nation’s top five teams in rebounding margin for six straight years.
Liberty led the nation in the category in 2003-04 and 2004-05. The Lady Flames also
ended the season ranked in the top 10 nationally for scoring defense (second, 52.6 ppg)
and field goal percentage defense (sixth, .345).
A key late-season conference victory over High Point in 2006 made Green the winningest coach in Big South Conference history. He is also Liberty’s career wins leader.
The 2004-05 year was a special one on Liberty Mountain, for many reasons. A seniorladen Lady Flames team recorded upset wins over No. 4 seed Penn State (78-70) and No.
5 seed DePaul (88-79) in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, becoming just the
second team ever to advance to the Sweet 16 as a No. 13 seed. The Lady Flames ended
the season with their highest national ranking to date, No. 21 (USA Today/ESPN).
Green’s track record shows he has the ability to meet those challenges. The Lady
Flames have recorded two wins over UNLV, Virginia and West Virginia and solo victories
over No. 19 DePaul, No. 17 Kansas State, No. 25 Penn State, Virginia Tech and Wake
Forest during Green’s tenure. The upset victory over No. 25 Virginia in 2003 marked Liberty’s first win over a Top 25 team.
His record against conference foes is equally impressive. He led the Lady Flames on
a Big South record 47-game winning streak and currently owns a .917 (154-14) winning
percentage against conference teams. Green has marched through conference play with
one or fewer setbacks seven times, while guiding the Lady Flames to two undefeated
conference seasons.

Scouting Gardner-Webb
After losing its 2009-10 season opener to Houston (86-64 on Nov. 13), Gardner-Webb
has won 11 of its last 12 games, with the lone setback during the stretch coming at No.
11 North Carolina (81-65 on Dec. 13). The Bulldogs, who have won seven consecutive
games at Paul Porter Arena, own impressive wins over Big 10 foe Purdue (56-55 on Dec.
21) and 11-2 East Carolina (57-45 on Dec. 5).
Currently receiving votes in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Top 25 poll, Gardner-Webb
features five players who are averaging between 9.1 and 11.5 ppg. Margaret Roundtree, a
6-0 senior forward, leads the way with 11.5 ppg and 5.9 rpg. Courtney Epps, a 5-9 junior
guard, also averages 11.5 ppg. Twins Dominique and Monique Hudson, both 5-5 junior
guards, post 10.9 ppg and 10.2 ppg, respectively. Sandra Vaitkute, a 6-6 redshirt junior
center, adds 9.1 ppg and a team-high 6.2 rpg.
The Coaching Matchup
Liberty Head Coach Carey Green is in his 11th season with the Lady Flames, and has
led his team to nine Big South titles. A five-time Big South Coach of the Year, Green owns
a 244-80 career record and is the all-time wins leader at Liberty and among Big South
women’s basketball coaches. His career winning percentage (.753) ranked ninth all-time
among NCAA Division I women’s basketball coaches at the season’s outset. Green is 3-0
versus Gardner-Webb.
Gardner-Webb is coached by Rick Reeves, who is 334-322 in his 20th season as a
collegiate head coach and 67-84 in six years with the Bulldogs. He served as Liberty’s
head coach from 1990-91 through 1998-99, leading the Lady Flames to a trio of Big South
titles. Reeves is 0-3 against Liberty, with all three setbacks coming last season.
Liberty-Gardner-Webb Series Notes
Liberty is 3-0 all-time versus Gardner-Webb, with all three meetings coming during the
2008-09 season. Each of the teams’ matchups last year carried a bit of extra significance.
The Bulldogs traveled to Lynchburg Jan. 3, 2009, for their first-ever Big South Conference game. Led by Megan Frazee’s 19 points and nine rebounds, the Lady Flames dealt
Gardner-Webb a 55-42 setback.
Frazee starred once again on Feb. 9, 2009, helping Liberty snap Gardner-Webb’s
program-record nine-game home winning streak. The eventual Big South Player of the
Year tallied 31 points and 10 boards in the Lady Flames’ hard-fought 58-51 triumph.
The Lady Flames and Bulldogs then met in the Big South Championship title contest,
March 15, 2009 at High Point’s Millis Center. Liberty came back from a 28-23 halftime
deficit to claim a 51-50 win, but had to withstand Dominique Hudson’s shot attempt from
close range as time expired.

Liberty is 13-5 in Big South openers, since joining the conference prior to the 1991-92

A Rare Rematch
Saturday’s game is a rematch of the 2009 Big South Championship title contest. This
is the first time since the 1998-99 season that the opening day of Big South Conference
action features a rematch of the previous year’s tournament championship game.
On Jan. 9, 1999, the defending conference champion Lady Flames posted a 71-56
road win at UNC Asheville. Liberty, coached by Rick Reeves, was sparked by Elena Kisseleva’s 27-point effort.
New Year’s Resolution
Liberty owns a 155-105 all-time record in January contests, including a 71-8 mark under head coach Carey Green. The Lady Flames have won 17 straight games in January,
since a 64-62 overtime loss at High Point, Jan. 20, 2007.
Liberty is scheduled to play nine games this January, including five contests at the
Vines Center. The Lady Flames currently own a 37-game home winning streak during the
month of January, since a 77-72 setback versus Elon, Jan. 13, 2000.
Success on Saturday
The Lady Flames are 3-0 in Saturday contests this season, highlighted by a victory
over the host Midshipmen in the Navy Classic championship game on Nov. 21. Liberty
also defeated Lafayette (Nov. 28) and Glenville State (Dec. 5) by an average of 38 points
in Saturday meetings.
Tar Heel State Tilts
Saturday’s game at Gardner-Webb will be Liberty’s third contest this season against
a foe from North Carolina. The Lady Flames are 2-0 versus North Carolina opponents so
far in 2009-10, claiming victories over Winston-Salem State and UNC Greensboro in the
first two games of the year.
The Lady Flames will meet Gardner-Webb again on Feb. 8, at the Vines Center. Liberty is also slated to face Tar Heel State squads High Point (Jan. 30 and March 8), North
Carolina A&T (Jan. 5), North Carolina Central (Feb. 4) and UNC Asheville (Jan. 18 and
Feb. 27) later this season.
A Look Back
Liberty will open play in the decade of the 2010s Saturday at Gardner-Webb, after
closing out the most successful decade in program history Tuesday at No. 21/23 Virginia.
Here are a few of the Lady Flames’ accomplishments during the 2000s.
-- Liberty went 238-75 (.760) during the decade, including a 154-14 (.917) mark against
Big South Conference opponents.
-- The Lady Flames won nine Big South Conference titles and made nine NCAA Tournament appearances, including a run to the “Sweet 16” in 2005.
-- Three different Lady Flames combined to win six Big South Player of the Year awards:
Katie Feenstra (2003, 2004 and 2005), Megan Frazee (2008 and 2009) and Sharon Wilkerson (2000).
-- Feenstra and Frazee became Liberty’s first two WNBA players in program history.
A Challenging Slate
Gardner-Webb enters Saturday’s game with an 11-2 record. The Bulldogs are Liberty’s 10th opponent in the season’s first 11 contests which has boasted a record of .500
or better at the time of the matchup.
The Lady Flames have also faced two teams (No. 21/23 Virginia and No. 25 James
Madison) currently ranked in the Top 25.
On the Road with Green
The Lady Flames have been successful in Big South regular-season road games
under head coach Carey Green, going 62-8 (.886) over the past 10 seasons.

70 is the Magic Number
Liberty is 4-0 this season when scoring at least 70 points in a game, extending a
lengthy streak. The Lady Flames have now won 86 consecutive games when reaching the
70-point plateau offensively.
No. 24 Boston College was the most recent team to defeat Liberty when the Lady
Flames tallied 70 points. The Eagles dealt the Lady Flames a 74-70 overtime loss, Dec.
6, 2003 at the Brown Classic.
Liberty has not dropped a game when scoring 70 points in regulation since Dec. 4,
2002. That day, the Lady Flames fell in a road contest at Commonwealth foe Richmond
by an 88-74 count.
Big Wins, Tight Losses
Liberty has won its seven games by wide margins this season, while keeping it close
in each of its three losses.
The Lady Flames’ seven victories have come by an average of 27.4 points. Liberty’s
tightest win was a 63-52 triumph over Tulane, Nov. 20 at the Navy Classic.
Meanwhile, Liberty has lost its three games by a total of 25 points. James Madison
posted the widest margin of victory over the Lady Flames, defeating Liberty 60-50, Dec. 1
at the Vines Center.
Coach Green Versus the Big South
Liberty head coach Carey Green has enjoyed considerable success versus the Big
South with the Lady Flames. His teams are 154-14 against Big South opponents, including 127-13 in the regular season and 27-1 in the Big South Championship.
Green has never lost to his alma mater, Coastal Carolina (23-0), Charleston Southern
(23-0), Gardner-Webb (3-0) or Presbyterian (3-0) during his time at Liberty.
All-Tournament Honors
Redshirt sophomore forward Avery Warley was voted to the all-tournament team at
the Marriott Cavalier Classic, after posting 11.0 ppg and 7.5 rpg during the Lady Flames’
contests against Cornell and No. 21/23 Virginia.
A Tale of Two Halves
Liberty has regularly stepped up its level of play during the second half this season.
The Lady Flames are outscoring opponents by an average score of 36.9-25.3 during the
final 20 minutes of play, thus far this season.
Liberty is shooting .547 from the field after halftime, while limiting opponents to a .303
second-half field goal percentage.
Memorable Debut
Redshirt freshman Devon Brown was among four Lady Flames who made their collegiate debuts during Liberty’s 71-26 win over Winston-Salem State on Nov. 13. Brown led
Liberty with 26 points and added seven rebounds.
-- It was the most points a Lady Flame has scored in her collegiate debut since Elena Kisseleva scored 30 points against Bluefield on Nov. 23, 1996.
-- It marked the first time since Feb. 26, 1976 that a Liberty player has matched or exceeded the opponent’s score. That day, Trena Criss (33 points) outscored Roanoke College (22) by herself.
National Statistical Rankings
Through the contests of Dec. 20, the Lady Flames were ranked among the NCAA’s
top 25 teams in six statistical categories. At that juncture, Liberty sat No. 5 in field goal
percentage (.488), No. 6 in both rebound margin (+11.8) and three-point field goal percentage defense (.223), No. 7 in scoring defense (49.1 ppg), No. 9 in field goal percentage
defense (.329) and No. 22 in scoring margin (+18.3).

Liberty has played in a pair of tournaments this season, the Navy Classic (Nov. 20-21)
and the Marriott Cavalier Classic (Dec. 28-29). The Lady Flames won the Navy Classic,
while finishing second at this week’s Marriott Cavalier Classic.
Liberty has won four regular-season tournament championships during the last three
years, a list which also includes the 2008 National City Xavier Invitational, the 2008 UNLV
Lady Rebel Christmas Classic and the 2009 Hokie Hardwood Classic.
Clamping Down on Defense
The Lady Flames have held 94 consecutive opponents under 50 percent field goal
shooting. The last Liberty foe to sink more than half of its field goal attempts was Marist,
at the Maryland Terrapin Classic on Dec. 29, 2006.
In 2008-09, the Lady Flames ranked No. 6 nationally in field goal percentage defense,
allowing opponents to shoot just 34.5 percent for the season.
Liberty is off to a strong start this season, holding its first 10 opponents to 49.6 ppg
and 33.3 percent shooting from the field. The Lady Flames lead the Big South and rank in
the top 10 nationally in both categories.
Wanted for Theft
Liberty has employed an aggressive, trapping defense this season, helping the Lady
Flames rank third in the Big South with 10.8 steals per contest. Liberty has tallied doubledigit steals seven times in its first 10 games of the year. Leading the way is senior Amber
Mays, who has accounted for 31 of the Lady Flames’ 108 thefts.
The Container is Half Full
This season, the Lady Flames are 4-0, when shooting 50 percent or higher from the
field. Liberty is now 63-0 under head coach Carey Green, when the Lady Flames sink at
least half of their field goals.
Liberty Versus Non-Conference Opposition
Liberty is 7-3 against non-conference opponents this season, boosting its all-time
non-conference ledger to 273-296. The Lady Flames have won 14 of their last 17 non-Big
South tilts at the Vines Center.
Liberty’s best-ever season against non-conference foes came in 1997-98, when the
Lady Flames went 14-1 outside the Big South. Liberty’s lone non-conference setback that
season came to eventual national champion Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA
Tournament.
Lady Flames to Face Wide Variety of Non-Conference Foes
Liberty is scheduled to face opponents from nine different conferences this season,
including ACC (Virginia), CAA (James Madison), Conference USA (Tulane), Ivy (Cornell),
MEAC (North Carolina A&T & Winston-Salem State), Patriot (Lafayette & Navy), SEC
(Auburn), Southern (UNC Greensboro) and WVIAC (Glenville State) foes.
Painting a Masterpiece
Last season, Liberty regularly controlled the area around the basket, outscoring 29 of
33 opponents in the “points in the paint” statistical category.
This year, the Lady Flames are off to an outstanding start in racking up “points in the
paint” once again. Liberty has outscored all 10 opponents inside the paint in 2009-10, by
an average margin of 26.2 points (41.8 to 15.6).
At this week’s Marriott Cavalier Classic, the Lady Flames notched 80 points in the
paint, as compared with only 34 for Cornell and No. 21/23 Virginia, combined.
There is Only One
Starting point guard Amber Mays is the only senior on this year’s team roster. Liberty
has not had so few seniors since the 2005-06 Lady Flames played the season without a
single senior.

Longest-Tenured Assistant Coaches
The 2009-10 season is Heather Stephens’ seventh campaign as an assistant coach
on Carey Green’s coaching staff. This season, she snapped a tie with Jeri (Wiley) Porter
as the longest-tenured assistant coach in Liberty women’s basketball history. Porter is
now the head coach at George Mason.
The Lady Flames have gone 153-48 and won five Big South titles during Stephens’

Same Number, New Face
It may take a few games for Liberty fans to get used to seeing a new player wearing
the No. 40 uniform, after Megan Frazee donned the number for the last four seasons.
Among many other accomplishments and accolades, Frazee graduated as the No. 2 scorer (1,883 points) and No. 3 rebounder (951 rebounds) in program history, leaving some
very big shoes to fill.
Liberty’s new No. 40, Devon Brown, has worn the number proudly so far. The redshirt freshman from Waynesboro, Va. is averaging 18.1 ppg and 8.4 rpg, pacing the Lady
Flames in both categories. She also leads the Big South in scoring, something no conference freshman has achieved since Liberty’s Elena Kisseleva in 1996-97.

International Flavor
Freshman Jelena Antic hails from Skopje, Macedonia and sophomore Tolu Omotola
was born in London, England, giving Liberty international players on its roster for the 16th
consecutive season. The last time the Lady Flames’ roster consisted solely of Americanborn players was the 1993-94 campaign. Every Carey Green-coached team at Liberty has
featured at least one international player.

Even though Jelena Antic was born in Macedonia, she played high school basketball
at Liberty Christian Academy in Lynchburg, Va. She is one of four current Lady Flames
who attended high school within 70 miles of the Liberty campus, joining Kylee Beecher

Gaining Some National Recognition
Liberty earned a single vote in the most recent ESPN/USA Today Coaches Top 25
Poll, released on Dec. 8, marking the second straight week the Lady Flames received a
vote.
Liberty also collected one vote in the AP Top 25 Poll, released on Nov. 30.
Turning Up the Heat in the Furnace
The 2009-10 campaign is the 18th season the Liberty women’s basketball team has
called the Vines Center its full-time home. The “Furnace” has served as a favorable venue
for the Lady Flames over the years. Liberty is 191-52 (.786) all-time at the Vines Center,
including 10-2 last season.
The Lady Flames are 3-1 to start this year’s 15-game home schedule and are 99-10
in their last 109 home games, dating back to the 2001-02 season.
Noting the 90s
The Lady Flames scored a season-high 90 points during their Nov. 28 victory at Lafayette. It was the 10th time Liberty has reached the 90-point plateau under head coach
Carey Green.
The Lady Flames’ most recent 90-point outburst came during a 92-68 home win over
St. Paul’s, Dec. 13, 2008.
Liberty had not scored 90 points in a road game since a 94-75 triumph at Richmond,
Dec. 4, 1999 in the opening round of the Wachovia Women’s Invitational.
Corralling the Caroms
Liberty has ranked among the nation’s top five teams in rebounding margin for six
consecutive seasons, including a No. 2 listing in 2008-09. Even though two of the top
three rebounders from last year’s squad graduated, the Lady Flames have gotten off to a
strong start again this season.
Liberty has won the rebounding battle in nine of its first 10 games this season, by an
average of 12.0 boards per contest. Leading the way are redshirt freshman Devon Brown
(8.4 rpg) and redshirt sophomore Avery Warley (7.8 rpg).
Lack of Overtime
Liberty has played only one overtime game in its last 189 outings, a 64-62 setback at
High Point on Jan. 20, 2007. Since that contest at the Millis Center, the Lady Flames have
played 88 consecutive games without needing extra time.
The Lady Flames’ most recent overtime victory came on Jan. 6, 2004, when Liberty
defeated American, 76-72, on the road in double overtime. No current Lady Flame has
won an overtime contest in college.
Liberty’s most recent overtime contest at the Vines Center was a memorable one. The
Lady Flames defeated Virginia, 77-69, in overtime on Nov. 26, 2002, to claim their firstever win over the Cavaliers. It also marked Liberty’s first win over a ranked opponent, as
Virginia entered the game with a No. 25 national ranking.
Big Shoes to Fill
Seven seniors graduated from last year’s Liberty team, which went 24-9 and won its
second consecutive Big South title. Alexandria Bream, Megan Frazee, Molly Frazee, Moriah Frazee, Rachel Hammond, Rebecca Lightfoot and Jessica Nelson accounted for 57.0
percent of the Lady Flames’ points and 41.7 percent of the team’s rebounds in 2008-09.
Headlining the group was Megan Frazee, who claimed the Big South Player of the
Year and Big South Championship MVP awards.
Youth will be Served
Underclassmen have stepped up to fill the void left by the seven seniors who graduated from the 2008-09 Liberty roster. Through the first 10 games of the 2009-10 campaign,
the Lady Flames’ freshmen and sophomores are accounting for 73.2 percent of the team’s
points and 77.2 percent of Liberty’s rebounds.
The Lady Flames’ top five rebounders are all either freshmen or sophomores, as are
four of the top five scorers.

The Lady Flames were tabbed to repeat as Big South Conference champions in the
preseason coaches and media poll, with High Point voted a conference co-favorite. Liberty claimed nine of 20 first-place votes and earned 160 total points, which was the same

Living Out of a Suitcase
Saturday’s contest at Gardner-Webb will wrap up a month-long gap between home
games for the Lady Flames. Since Liberty defeated Glenville State at the Vines Center on
Dec. 5, the Lady Flames have played at Auburn, dispersed for a 10-day Christmas break
and then competed in a pair of contests at the Marriott Cavalier Classic in Charlottesville,
Va.
Furious Comeback
The Lady Flames fell behind Navy, 20-4, 7:56 into the Navy Classic championship
game on Nov. 21. Liberty then outscored the host Midshipmen, 51-23, during the remainder of the game to claim an improbable 55-43 victory.
It was the Lady Flames’ largest comeback since Nov. 27, 2001, in a matchup with
VCU at the Vines Center. The Rams owned a 38-22 advantage with 18:41 remaining in
the second half, before the Lady Flames rallied for a 65-60 victory.
Watch Out for Washington
After totaling 19 points during her first four collegiate games, freshman LaKendra
Washington exploded for 21 points at Lafayette on Nov. 28. The Milwaukee, Wis., native
and Devon Brown have both recorded 20-point outings as freshmen this season. This is
the first time since 2001-02, multiple Liberty rookies have recorded 20-point games. That
season, Katie Feenstra and Stephanie Walker accomplished the feat.
Freshman of the Week
LaKendra Washington’s 21-point, four-steal performance at Lafayette on Nov. 28 was
recognized by the Big South Conference on Dec. 1. The freshman guard was named the
Big South Freshman of the Week, marking the second consecutive week a Liberty rookie
was honored by the Big South.
First Since Frazee
After averaging 21.0 ppg and 10.7 rpg during Liberty’s 3-0 week, Devon Brown was
honored as Big South Player of the Week on Nov. 24. She became the first Lady Flames
freshman to win the award since Megan Frazee captured it twice during her rookie season
(Dec. 5, 2005 & Jan. 16, 2006).

Liberty’s defense set the tone for its seasonopening victory over Winston-Salem State,
keeping the Lady Rams off the scoreboard
for the first 8:44 of play. Meanwhile, redshirt
freshman Devon Brown took care of things at
the offensive end, exploding for 26 points in
the Lady Flames’ 71-26 triumph at the Vines
Center. As previously mentioned, the Rams
did not find the bottom of the net for the first
8:44, as Liberty jumped out to a 13-0 lead.
The first seven points of Brown’s collegiate
career came during the Lady Flames’ gameopening surge. The Rams scored six of the
contest’s next seven markers, trimming their
deficit to 14-6 on Jillian Charlet’s layup at
the 6:38 mark of the opening half. However, Winston-Salem State managed only six
points for the remainder of the stanza, while
Liberty’s lead ballooned to 18. Brown sent
the Lady Flames into halftime with a 30-12
advantage, swishing back-to-back triples in
the final minute of the period to close out at
15-point half. Liberty put the game away with
a 20-4 run to open the second half, sparked
by a pair of freshmen. Brown had 13 points
and LaKendra Washington tallied five markers during the surge, which lasted 9:09.
Winston-Salem State got no closer than 31
for the remainder of the contest, and the
Lady Flames went on to wrap up a 45-point
win, 71-26. It was the fewest points a Liberty
opponent has scored since the Lady Flames
limited Winthrop to 26 markers on Feb. 28,
2005.

Liberty held its second straight opponent
to below 30 percent field goal shooting and
put three players in double figures versus
UNC Greensboro. As a result, the Lady
Flames opened the campaign with their
second straight victory, a 60-42 triumph at
the Vines Center. Devon Brown scored 26
points for the second consecutive game to
open her college career. Neither team found
the bottom of the net for the first 2:38 of the
game, before UNC Greensboro’s Amanda
Leigh drained a 15-foot jumper to break the
ice. However, the blue-clad Spartans only
made one field goal over the next 10:37.
During their stretch of cold shooting, Liberty opened up a 16-4 lead, aided by six
Brown points. UNCG scored six of the next
nine points, trimming its deficit to 19-10 on
Lakiah Hyson’s jumper at the 5:27 mark.
The Spartans were still within nine at 23-14,
before Brown sparked a 9-3 Liberty burst
with seven points and a steal. Her theft led
to Amber Mays’ layup, which gave the Lady
Flames their largest lead of the opening half,
32-17. UNC Greensboro then scored the
stanza’s final four markers, cutting Liberty’s
halftime advantage to 11 points, 32-21. The
Spartans emerged from the locker room with
a 7-3 surge. Hyson’s triple at 16:51 closed
the run, bringing her team to within 35-28.
Another UNCG three-pointer, by Dayshaun
Richbow at 12:58, again cut Liberty’s edge
to seven, 41-34. However, the Spartans did
not make their next field goal until a Leigh
three-pointer 7:36 later. By that time, Liberty
had opened up a 54-38 advantage with a
13-4 run. Mays contributed five points to the
surge, which wrapped up with her layup at
the 6:58 mark. UNC Greensboro got no closer than 13 the rest of the evening, as Liberty
finished off a 60-42 victory in its first home
game against the Spartans since the 1997
Big South Championship title contest.

A 24-2 first-half run gave Liberty a lead it
never relinquished, and the Lady Flames
went on to win the opening game of the Navy
Classic, 63-52 over Tulane. After Tulane’s
Brittany Lindsey scored the game’s first hoop
on a lob play, the Green Wave only managed
two points over the next 12:46. During that
time, Liberty outscored green-uniformed Tulane, 24-2. Rachel McLeod scored six points
during the extended surge, including a pair
of free throws at 7:12 which gave the Lady
Flames a 24-4 advantage. The Green Wave
then began to chip away at their deficit. A
10-3 surge, capped off by Chassity Brown’s
triple from the top of the key, brought Tulane
to within 30-19, 10 seconds before the intermission. LaKendra Washington connected
on a driving layup as the buzzer sounded,
pushing Liberty’s halftime lead to 13 points,
at 32-19. Two triples by Indira Kaljo during
the first three minutes of the second period
helped Tulane cut the Lady Flames’ lead to
36-27. Brown then notched the last 10 points
of Liberty’s ensuing 12-1 run, including a 25foot three-pointer from the right wing as the
shot clock expired with 12:44 remaining on
the second-half clock. The Waynesboro, Va.,
native’s long-distance connection bolstered
the Lady Flames’ advantage back up to 4828. Tulane was not done yet, as two more
Kaljo trifectas bookended an 8-0 burst. Her
three-pointer at 10:48 made the score 48-36,
Liberty. The Lady Flames quickly pushed the
lead back to 16, 52-36, on baskets by Dymond Morgan and Brown within 42 seconds
following Kaljo’s triple. The Green Wave cut
their deficit to single digits one last time, at
61-52, when Lindsey canned a layup with
1:54 left. However, those were Tulane’s final
points of the afternoon.

After falling behind by 16 points within the
game’s first eight minutes, Liberty came
back to win the Navy Classic championship
over host Navy, 55-43. Homestanding Navy
made seven of its first 10 field goal attempts,
opening up a 20-4 advantage to start the
game. Liberty then held Navy without a point
for nearly four and a half minutes. However,
the Lady Flames only managed a pair of Avery Warley layups during the home team’s
drought, cutting their deficit to 20-8 at the
7:55 mark of the opening half. A quick 5-0
burst, capped off by a second-chance layup
by LaKendra Washington, briefly brought
Liberty to within single digits, at 24-15, 5:43
before the intermission. The Midshipmen
bolstered their lead to 30-17, before Liberty
closed the stanza on a 7-2 run. The surge
featured Brown’s first five points of the
evening, including a three-pointer from the
right wing as the halftime buzzer sounded.
Her triple made the score 32-24, Navy, at
the break. Liberty’s defense held Navy to
one made field goal during the first 11:45 of
the second half. In the meantime, the Lady
Flames composed a 20-3 run, taking their
initial lead of the contest when Dymond
Morgan drained a runner as the shot clock
expired at 12:20. Her clutch hoop made the
score 36-35, Liberty. Brown tallied 10 points
during the extended surge, including an acrobatic layup at the 8:31 mark which lifted
the Lady Flames’ advantage to 44-35. Navy
trimmed Liberty’s lead to 46-41 with 4:41
left, after three-pointers by Erin Edwards
and Consedine. The Midshipmen were also
within five, 48-43, when Angela Myers converted a steal into a fast break layup at 1:27.
However, Navy did not score again, and the
Lady Flames closed out their win by making
seven-of-nine free throws during the final
minute.

LaKendra Washington’s career-high 21
points paced four Liberty players in double figures at Lafayette, helping the Lady
Flames record an impressive 90-55 road
victory over the Leopards. Second-chance
hoops by Amber Mays and Avery Warley initiated a game-opening 6-0 run by the Lady
Flames. Lafayette quickly cut its deficit to 6-4
at 17:04, after notching its first two baskets
of the afternoon within a 21-second span.
However, that was as close as the Leopards got for the remainder of the opening
half. Another 6-0 burst by red-clad Liberty,
culminating with a Warley layup at the 14:47
mark, pushed the visitors’ advantage back to
12-4. Lafayette pulled to within three points,
6:12 before halftime, when Lauren Jackson
nailed the first three-pointer of the contest by
either team. Her long-distance connection
trimmed Liberty’s advantage to 23-20. The
Leopards still trailed by three, 29-26, before
the Lady Flames put together their best run
of the opening 20 minutes. Liberty outscored
Lafayette, 13-2, for the remainder of the
half, aided by six Washington tallies. As a
result, the Lady Flames took a 42-28 advantage into the locker room. Lafayette drained
three of its first four field goals to start the
second half, trimming Liberty’s lead to 4535 on Amanda Smith’s mid-range jumper at
17:05. The Leopards did not make another
field goal until the 8:19 mark, when Jackson
hit a jump shot from the right corner. During
that time, Liberty put the game away with a
19-2 surge. Brown totaled eight points during
the extended run, including a layup at 11:34
which made the score 64-37, Lady Flames.
Lafayette got no closer than 17 the rest of
the game, and Liberty remained unbeaten
with a 90-55 triumph in its first-ever meeting
with the Leopards.

In the end, visiting James Madison held off
Liberty for a 60-50 victory. James Madison
held the Lady Flames without a made field
goal for a total of 5:27, while the Dukes recorded an 11-1 run. Five straight points by
Kiara Francisco off the bench gave JMU an
11-3 lead, 13:55 before the intermission.
James Madison’s advantage reached 15
points, 22-7, when Nichelle Glover canned
a jumper from the paint at 6:12. A 5-0 Liberty burst, solely consisting of Devon Brown
free throws, pulled the Lady Flames to within
10, at 22-12. However, that was as close as

Eight Lady Flames scored at least six points
in an 86-45 rout of Division II Glenville State.
Liberty grabbed a Vines Center-record 67
rebounds and racked up 64 points in the
paint. The Lady Flames jumped out to a 7-0
lead within the first 1:58 of play, with Devon
Brown contributing five of the points. Liberty’s advantage reached eight points, before
blue-clad Glenville State pulled to within 1411 with a 5-0 burst. Beth Deren’s three-pointer from the left corner at 14:21 capped off the
visitors’ surge. The Lady Flames then limited
the high-scoring Pioneers to two points over
the next eight minutes, tallying a 12-2 run
during the span. Dymond Morgan split a pair
of free throws, 7:39 before the break, giving
Liberty a 26-13 edge. Three-pointers by Miranda Reed and Ginny Petties highlighted
Glenville State’s ensuing 10-3 surge. Petties’
triple at the 3:35 mark closed the gap to 2923. Brown then scored seven points during
the Lady Flames’ 10-0, half-ending burst.
The surge bolstered Liberty’s halftime lead
to 39-23. Liberty scored the first six points of
the second half, extending its overall run to
16-0. Back-to-back layups by Brown pushed
the Lady Flames’ advantage to 22 points, at
45-23. Four straight Glenville State tallies
trimmed the Pioneers’ deficit to 18, 45-27,
with 16:51 remaining on the second-half
clock. Layups by Avery Warley bookended
a 9-0 Liberty run, which enabled the Lady
Flames to double up Glenville State’s score
once again, at 54-27. The Pioneers never
got any closer than 24 points down for the remainder of the game. Liberty’s lead reached
42 points, before the Lady Flames closed
out their second 40-point home win of the
season, 86-45.
Game 8
Auburn, Ala.
Liberty’s furious second-half comeback
sliced Auburn’s lead from 14 points to three.
However, the Tigers were able to fend off the
Lady Flames and hold on to claim a 70-64
victory at Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum.
The lead changed hands four times during
the early-going, and Devon Brown’s oldfashioned three-point play made the score
14-13, Auburn. The Lady Flames then
scored only two points over the next 9:44.
Liberty’s offensive drought enabled Auburn
to compose a 14-2 run, featuring three Alli
Smalley triples. Blanche Alverson’s transition layup wrapped up the surge, 3:37 before the intermission. Her hoop bolstered
the homestanding Tigers’ advantage to 2815. Alverson’s second triple of the opening
20 minutes sent the Tigers into the locker
room with a 33-19 lead. Liberty notched five
of the second half’s first six points, shaving
Auburn’s edge to 34-24 on Kylee Beecher’s
free throw with 18:45 remaining. Chantel
Hilliard pushed the Tigers’ lead back to 14,
44-30, when she made a baseline jumper
at 14:19. That was Auburn’s last made field
goal until Hilliard’s putback, 4:51 later. The
Lady Flames fashioned a 14-4 surge during
the span, culminating with LaKendra Washington’s first basket of the game, a driving layup at 9:51. Her conversion made the score
48-44, Auburn. Brown converted a lob pass
by Amber Mays into a layup at the 4:19 mark,
trimming the Lady Flames’ deficit to 57-54. A
5-0 Auburn spurt, finished off by KeKe Carrier’s foul shot at 1:38, increased the home
team’s lead to 62-54. Brown then nailed
back-to-back three-pointers from the left corner, sandwiching a Morgan Toles charity toss
for the Tigers. Brown’s second trifecta, which
came at the 50-second mark, closed the gap
to 63-60.That was as close as Liberty got,
though, as Auburn closed out the contest by
making seven out of eight free throws.

Devon Brown tallied 18 points against Cornell, leading three Lady Flames in double
digits. As a result, Liberty reached the Marriott Cavalier Classic title game with an impressive 70-40 victory over the Big Red at
John Paul Jones Arena. Liberty’s trapping
defense forced four early Cornell turnovers,
leading to an 8-0 Lady Flames advantage
out of the gate. Amber Mays’ steal and fast
break layup at the 16:00 mark punctuated
Liberty’s game-opening surge. Clare Fitzpatrick broke the ice with a 12-foot jumper
on Cornell’s ensuing possession, before
Liberty reeled off six more points in succession. Back-to-back hoops by Brown pushed
the Lady Flames’ lead to 14-2, 13:25 before
halftime. Cornell’s most successful stretch
of the opening 20 minutes saw the Big Red
hold the Lady Flames scoreless for 3:24.
Meanwhile, Cornell posted a 5-0 run, cutting its deficit to 20-11 when Allie Fedorowicz
connected on both ends of a one-and-one
at 6:43. However, the Big Red managed
only one more field goal, a Lauren Benson
three-pointer, for the remainder of the half.
Liberty closed the stanza with an 11-2 surge,
capped off by Brown’s fifth made field goal.
Her jumper put the Lady Flames in front,
31-14. The two teams traded hoops for the
first five minutes of the second period, before Liberty put the game away with an 18-2
surge. Jelena Antic, making the first start of
her young career, scored five points during
the extended run. Fellow freshman LaKendra Washington closed the surge with a
jumper at the 9:18 mark, giving Liberty its
largest lead of the night, 59-23. Liberty went
on to claim its fourth 30-point win of the season, 70-40.

Tournament MVP Monica Wright keyed
a late 8-0 Virginia run, helping the Cavaliers hold off Liberty and claim the Marriott
Cavalier Classic title. No. 21/23 Virginia
captured a hard-fought 63-54 victory over
the Lady Flames. Avery Warley scored the
Lady Flames’ first six points of the evening,
helping Liberty take an 8-5 advantage, 4:25
into the game. Virginia took its largest lead of
the early-going, 18-14, when Paulisha Kellum canned a layup at the 9:05 mark. Her
transition hoop capped a 6-0 Cavalier spurt.
The home team maintained a four-point
lead until Liberty fashioned a 10-0 run. Lady
Flame freshmen keyed the surge, which featured a LaKendra Washington old-fashioned
three-point play and a Jelena Antic triple.
The run gave blue-clad Liberty its largest
advantage of the game, 28-22. The Cavaliers responded with an 11-1 run over the
final 2:35 of the stanza, taking a 33-29 halftime advantage. Wright notched six of her
half-leading 13 points during the burst. The
Lady Flames emerged from the locker room
by scoring the second half’s first five points.
Amber Mays’ contested layup reclaimed the
lead for Liberty, 34-33. Five consecutive
points by Rachel McLeod boosted the Lady
Flames’ edge to 41-37, with 14:37 remaining
on the second-half clock. Visiting Liberty still
owned a 43-42 edge, before a 9-2 Cavalier
surge. Telia McCall contributed four points
to the run, including a pair of free throws at
8:09 which made the score 51-45, in favor
of Virginia. After the Lady Flames pulled to
within three on a Mays free throw with 7:06
left, Virginia put together its crucial 8-0 run.
McCall’s hoop at the 3:34 mark bolstered Virginia’s advantage to 59-48. Liberty pulled to
within seven points twice in the closing minutes, but ended up losing, 63-54.
