Workshop: International Approaches to Support Gender Equality in Research Careers Tuesday 24th March: 13.30 -‐ 16.00 G.30 Jubilee Building Workshop Panellists include: Prof Alice Abreu, (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) was the first International Council for Science director in Brazil, a former Vice President of the Brazilian National Research Council for Scientific and Technological Development and Director of the Office of Education, Science and Technology of the Organization of American States. Dr. Shirley Malcom, (Director, Education and Human Resources, American Association for the Advancement of Science) is a former member of the National Science Board, the policymaking body of the National Science Foundation. Shirley Malcom served on President Clinton’s Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology. She works to improve the quality and increase access to education and careers in STEM fields as well as to enhance public science literacy. Prof Louise Morley, Director of the Centre for Higher Education and Equity Research (panel chair) Louise Morley has recently completed an ESRC/DFID funded research project on Widening Participation in Higher Education in Ghana and Tanzania, and directed a DFID/ Carnegie funded research project on Gender Equity in Commonwealth Higher Education. Prof Clare Mackie, is Pro Vice Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, and Chair of the University’s Athena Swan Committee at the University of Sussex. Athena SWAN is a national scheme that recognises commitment to advancing women's careers in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine) in higher education and research. Prof Johan Schot, is the Director of SPRU at the University of Sussex. Since joining SPRU he has introduced a new research strategy, which aims to develop a new innovation theory that will address a number of key challenges our world is facing including inequality, the democratic deficit, and the need to develop new systems of provision for security, food, water, energy, healthcare and mobility.
