The Game
After three-straight home contests, the Liberty Flames (1-3, 0-0 Big South) return to
the road to take on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame in South bend, Ind. for their opening
contest of the Chicago Invitational on Nov. 22. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. Liberty will then
head to Evanston, Ill. on Nov. 24, taking on Big Ten member Northwestern. The Flames
will have three days rest before moving over to Chicago’s UIC Pavilion to square off with
the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils on Nov. 27 at 3:30 p.m. In the final contest of the
invitational, The Flames will face either Kennesaw State or Jacksonville on Nov. 28. Tipoff
is set for 12:30 or 3 p.m., depending on seeding.
Recent Results
On Tuesday, a crowd of 8,143 watched Liberty host an ACC powerhouse for the first
time, making it the ninth-largest attendance in Vines Center history. The Flames looked to
make up for last year’s narrow loss to the Tigers, but Clemson prevented the team from
accomplishing the feat, taking a 79-39 decision in its first-ever trip to Liberty.
This past Thursday, The Old Dominion Monarchs visited the Vines Center in a rematch of last season’s BracketBuster contest. Old Dominion proved to be just as formidable this time around against Liberty as it was in the last meeting, defeating the Flames,
73-41.

Entering his first season as head coach of the Flames, Dale Layer is the eighth coach
in program history. Layer returns to Liberty Mountain after previously serving as an assistant coach for the Flames during the 2007-08 season.
This will be Layer’s third head coaching stint and first since leaving Colorado State
in 2007. Layer, 50, comes to Liberty most recently from a successful run as an assistant
coach at BIG EAST member and nationally ranked Marquette this past season where he
worked with the guards. Layer helped the Eagles to a 25-10 record and a second round
appearance in the NCAA Tournament despite lacking the full-time services of All-American Dominic James, who injured himself near the end of the season.
Dale Layer first served as an assistant at Liberty during the 2007-08 season, helping
the Flames to its best regular season finish since Liberty won the 2004 Big South Championship.
Layer has also demonstrated the ability to develop talent, including former Colorado
State center Jason Smith. The seven-footer scored over 1,500 points for Layer’s Rams
during his three seasons with the program before entering the NBA Draft following his
junior campaign. Due to his development under Layer’s tutelage, Smith was chosen with
the 20th selection of the NBA Draft’s first round by the Miami Heat in 2007. His rights were
traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. When Smith graduated high school he was ranked as
the 276th best player in his class and under Layer developed in three seasons to the 20th
selection in the NBA Draft. Several of Layer’s recruiting classes at Colorado State were
ranked among the top 40 nationally by various recruiting publications.
Layer has a career 271-196 record (17th year) as a head coach, including nine seasons at the helm of Queens University (formally Queens College) in Charlotte, N.C. He
also served as the athletics director while at the school and started the basketball program
in 1989 from scratch at the formerly all women’s institution. Layer’s student-athletes excel
in the classroom too. In Layer’s 16 seasons as a head coach, he has accompanied 43
seniors to be honored on senior night and all 43 earned a college degree, marking 100
percent graduation rate of all players who finish their eligibility under Layer.
After graduating from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1980, Layer started
his coaching career as an assistant under Jim Harley, his former coach. Before moving on
to Queens University, Layer spent seven of the next eight years at Eckerd College except
for the 1982-83 season, when he was an assistant at Eastern Kentucky.
Layer made the jump to Division I in 1998 when Ritchie McKay took the head coaching job at Colorado State and named him to his staff. During McKay’s two seasons with
the Rams, Layer helped lead Colorado State to the NIT Tournament in 1999, where they
beat Mississippi State and Colorado before falling to eventual champion, California.
While with the Rams, Layer had a 103-106 record, including a 17-13 mark in 2007. In
2003, Layer led Colorado State to the Mountain West Conference Championship and its
first NCAA Tournament bid in 13 years, falling to Duke in the first round.

A Look at the Fighting Irish
Last season, Notre Dame finished with a 21-15 record, qualifying for the National Invitational Tournament. The Irish bested UAB (70-64), New Mexico (70-68) and Kentucky
(77-67), before falling to Penn State (67-59) in the semifinals.
Notre Dame is off to a 3-0 start this year, with wins over North Florida (86-65), St.
Francis (Pa.) (95-72) and Long Beach State (82-62). Through the first three contests,
Luke Harangody is leading the way, averaging 25.0 points and 9.3 rebounds per game,
followed by Ben Hansbrough, who is averaging 16.0 points per game.
First Meeting
Sunday’s contest marks the inaugural meeting between the Flames and the Fighting
Irish. The Chicago Invitational features three other teams the Flames have never faced
before in the history of the program - Mississippi Valley State, Kennesaw State and Tennessee State.
Liberty versus the BIG EAST
The Flames are 0-5 against the current members of the BIG EAST. Liberty is 0-1
against DePaul, 0-1 against Providence and 0-3 against Seton Hall.
Liberty’s most recent BIG EAST match-up occurred last season at the Findlay Toyota
Las Vegas Classic on Dec. 17, 2008. Liberty went down to the wire with the DePaul Blue
Demons, dropping the contest 64-63. Kyle Ohman and Jesse Sanders tallied 10 and six
points respectively. Tyler Baker returned to action in the contest after missing 40-straight
games, chipping in six points.
Last Season Scouting
Dale Layer has never faced Notre Dame as a head coach, but his recent memories
of the Fighting Irish are still rather vivid. Last season as an assistant at Marquette, Layer
helped coach from the sidelines in the Joyce Center, as the Hawks picked up a 71-64
win inside the Joyce Center on Jan. 26, 2009. Notre Dame’s Luke Harangody posted 29
points and 17 rebounds in the defeat.

Looking at the Wildcats
Last season, Northwestern finished the 2008-09 campaign with a 17-13 record. This
season, the Wildcats are off to a 1-1 start, with a win over Northern Illinois (77-55) and a
67-54 loss to Butler.
Liberty versus Northwestern
Northwestern is the only participant in the Chicago Invitational to have played against
the Flames previously. The Wildcats and the Flames have met one time (Dec. 17, 2001),
which resulted in a Northwestern win, 66-49.
On the Shelf
In Thursday’s contest against Old Dominion, senior forward Tyler Baker suffered an
ACL/MCL tear and will undergo surgery in the coming days. Prior to the injury, Baker was
averaging 5.3 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. On the Northwestern side, Wildcats
senior forward Kevin Coble suffered a left foot injury in practice before the start of the
season has yet to see any action this season. Last season, Coble averaged 15.5 points
and grabbed 4.8 boards per game.
Liberty versus the Big Ten
Besides Northwestern, Liberty has only met one other Big Ten member. On Dec. 22,
2002, the Flames faced off with Iowa, falling prey to the Hawkeyes 87-49.
Layer versus Big Ten Opponents
Dale Layer is currently 2-2 against Big Ten competition. As head coach of Colorado
State, Layer’s Rams went 1-0 against Michigan and 1-2 against the Purdue Boilermakers.
The coach’s first Big Ten encounter occurred during his second season at Colorado State
on Feb. 11, 2002, when the Rams defeated the Wolverines 70-66.
Coach Layer and the Rams matched up with the Boilermakers the next three seasons.
The first contest in the series resulted in an 84-56 defeat (Dec. 30, 2002). Exactly one year
later, Colorado State avenged the loss, winning 71-69 (Dec. 30, 2003). The final season
Layer’s Rams played the Boilermakers (Dec. 11, 2004), Purdue walked away with a narrow 69-68 victory.

being eliminated in the SWAC tournament by Prairie View A&M, 65-60. Mississippi Valley
State is off to a 1-2 start with losses to Washington State (94-66) and Gonzaga (92-74)
and a victory over Champion Baptist College (102-56).
Liberty versus the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC)
The Delta Devils are just the second opponent Liberty has faced from the SWAC.
The last time the Flames matched up with a current member of the conference was Dec.
22, 1990 at the Youngstown Holiday Christmas Tournament against Alabama State. The
Hornets defeated the Flames in the contest, 69-57.
Layer versus the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC)
Layer holds a perfect 3-0 record over current members of the SWAC. As head coach
of Colorado State, he picked up his first SWAC win over Prairie View A&M, 85-73, on
Dec. 27, 2002. The following season, on Dec. 4, 2003, the Rams soundly defeated Texas
Southern, 91-66. Layer’s most recent encounter with a SWAC team occurred in his final
season at Colorado State before coming to Liberty as an assistant. On Dec. 29, 2006,
Layer’s Rams edged Alabama State, 61-56.

A Look at the Owls
Kennesaw State is looking to bounce back after going 7-22 in 2008-09. The Owls are
off to a 2-0 start with wins over North Greenville (89-79) and North Georgia (78-65). Freshman forward Markeith Cummings is leading the way for Kennesaw State as the team’s
leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 16.5 points per game while grabbing 8.5 boards
per contest.
Liberty versus the Atlantic Sun Conference
Liberty is 10-18 all-time against current members of the Atlantic Sun Conference.
The Flames are 1-1 against Belmont, 9-9 against Campbell, 0-5 against East Tennessee
State. 0-2 against Lipscomb and 0-1 against Stetson.
Liberty’s rivalry with Campbell dates back to the program’s NAIA days and includes
match-ups from when both teams were members of the Big South. Campbell is slated to
depart from the Atlantic Sun and rejoin the conference in the 2011-2012 season.
Layer versus the Atlantic Sun Conference
If the Flames meet Kennesaw State in the Chicago Invitational, it will be Dale Layer’s
third match-up with an Atlantic Sun team. Layer has two previous wins over Stetson as
head coach of Colorado State, defeating the Hatters 79-70 and 93-57 in back-to-back
seasons (2003-04, 2004-05).
Atlantic Sun on the Docket
Kennesaw State is not the only Atlantic Sun team the Flames could encounter on the
schedule this season. Liberty could potentially face the Jacksonville Dolphins on Dec. 30
at the UCF Holiday Classic in Orlando, Fla.

Liberty versus the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC)
The Flames hold 4-3 record over current members of the Ohio Valley Conference.
Liberty is 2-1 against Eastern Kentucky and 2-2 against Morehead State. Liberty picked
up its two wins over Eastern Kentucky during the 1988-89 season, defeating the Colonels, 77-70 and 62-61. The teams’ most recent meeting took place in the 1989-90 campaign, when Eastern Kentucky edged out the Flames, 79-78.
Liberty also faced Morehead State during those two seasons, losing their first meeting 66-63 on Dec. 19, 1988. The following season, Liberty defeated the Eagles, 70-64.
Morehead State responded the following year, besting the Flames 77-70. In the final
contest of the series (Feb. 20, 1992), Liberty picked up a 98-78 win over the Eagles.
Layer versus the Ohio Valley Conference
If the Flames face off with Tennessee State, it will only be Dale Layer’s second
contest against an Ohio Valley Conference member since becoming a Division I head
coach. Layer’s Rams lost to Austin Peay, 74-72 in his first season with the Rams.
Minaya knows best
While the Flames themselves have not faced off against Tennessee State, one
member has. Liberty guard David Minaya competed against the Tigers during his one
year at fellow Ohio Valley Conference member Tennessee Tech. On Jan. 26, 2008,
Minaya received the start for the Golden Eagles, recording seven points in the contest.
The Tigers narrowly took the contest 73-72. The next meeting between the two teams
occurred on Feb. 9, 2008. Minaya’s Golden Eagles won the match-up, 78-75.

Recent Invitational Success
Last season, Liberty hosted the Liberty Thanksgiving Classic in the Vines Center,
Nov. 28-29. The mini tournament featured three other teams - Coker, South Carolina State
and William & Mary. In their first contest, the Flames picked up a solid win against Coker,
defeating the Cobras, 88-66. Jesse Sanders recorded 15 points in the contest, picking up
11 in the first half. Kyle Ohman chipped in with 13 points.
Game two pitted the Flames against intra-state competitor William & Mary. Liberty
saw its first overtime game in 75 contests, as the match-up went to two extra periods. The
Flames bested the Tribe in double overtime, 80-74, to win the invitational.
No Rest in November
The 2009-10 schedule features eight contests in November, tying for the most 11thmonth match-ups in school history. The last season Liberty played eight November games
was back in 1979 during the program’s NAIA days. The team was coached by Dale Gibson and finished with a 4-4 November record (28-11 on the season).
The Flames played their eighth contest on Nov. 30 against Mt. Vernon Nazarene and
then jumped into their December slate the next night against the Cougars. This season,
the Flames will receive five days rest between their last November and first December
contests, as Liberty plays its last game of the Chicago Invitational on Nov. 28 and then
returns to Lynchburg, Va. to open conference play against Charleston Southern on Dec.

Liberty Selected Seventh in Big South Preseason Poll
The Flames were predicted to finish seventh out of 10 teams in the Big South Conference for the 2009-10 season, as voted on by the conference’s head coaches and members of the media. Liberty is coming off a 23-12 season and a third-place finish in the
Big South. The Flames went 12-6 in conference play a year ago, and participated in the
inaugural CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT).

All-American Brothers
Two members of the 2009-10 Flames’ roster are younger brothers of 2008 All-Americans. Eric Gordon, Jr., is the older brother to freshman guard Evan Gordon. The elder
Gordon spent one season at Indiana and was Third Team All-America member in his lone
season with the Hoosiers. Gordon was picked seventh overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2008 NBA Draft and averaged 16.1 ppg his rookie season in the league. He is
currently averaging 18.9 ppg with the team.
Sophomore point guard Jesse’s Sanders older brother Thomas received an honorable mention on the 2008 All-America listing. The elder Sanders played four seasons
at Gardner-Webb prior to the team joining the Big South. In his senior season with the
Runnin’ Bulldogs, he was named 2008 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year. He currently plays
professionally in Spain.
Foreign Born
Freshman forward Patrick Konan, a native of the Ivory Coast, is the first Flame hailing
from outside the United States since the 2004-05 season, when Liberty’s roster featured
three foreign-born players ― power forward Leo Lightbourne (Andros, Bahamas), guard
John Clarke (Freeport, Bahamas) and Christian Webborn (La Ceiba, Honduras).

Almost Perfect
Kyle Ohman is currently shooting 20-22 (90.9 percent) from the foul line this season.
In the contest against Southern Virginia, Ohman netted all 10 of his shots from the charity
stripe. This past Thursday against Old Dominion, he shot 7-7 from the line. The senior’s
pair of missed free throws occurred in Liberty’s first contest of the season against George
Mason.
Rebounding Machine
Standing at 6-2, Evan Gordon is not letting his stature stop him from taking boards
from the big men. The freshman guard is currently averaging 5.3 rebounds per game, tying Kyle Ohman and Jesse Sanders for the team lead.
Gordon achieved a game high in rebounds Thursday against Old Dominion, grabbing
seven boards. During Tuesday’s ESPN College Tip-Off Marathon match-up against No.
22 Clemson, Gordon tallied six rebounds in the brunch-time contest.
Starter and Stopper
In Thursday’s contest against Old Dominion, freshman Patrick Konan earned the first
start of his collegiate career. During the contest, Konan tallied six points while grabbing
six boards. The forward looked even more impressive on the defensive end, helping hold
Old Dominion’s leading scorer and big man Gerald Lee to just four points.
Mr. 800
With his 17-point performance against Old Dominion Thursday, Kyle Ohman now has
exactly 800 points as a Liberty Flame. Ohman achieved the milestone at the foul line with
3:57 left in the contest. By reaching the eighth-century mark, Ohman now ranks 25th on
Liberty’s all-time scoring list, surpassing David Dees. Ohman just needs 32 points to take
24th place and 43 points to grab the 23rd position.
Offensive Spark
In the Flames’ first two contests this season, Kyle Ohman was the first player to light
up the scoreboard for Liberty. In the season opener against George Mason, Ohman tallied
the Flames’ first eight points, six coming from three-point land, giving Liberty a 6-0 start.
The following night on Nov. 14, Liberty found itself down early to the Southern Virginia
Knights when Ohman came through once again, scoring six-straight points for the Flames
to close the gap. The Flames went on to win 89-53.
Watchlist Week
Tuesday’s contest with Clemson marked Liberty’s first encounter with a member of
the 2009-10 Naismith Award Watchlist, as Trevor Booker entered the Vines Center this
past Tuesday, collecting 12 points and 12 rebounds. The second meeting with a Watchlist
member will take place this Sunday when the Flames travel to South Bend, Ind., for a
match-up with Notre Dame’s Luke Harangody as well as the rest of the Fighting Irish.
The Naismith Award Watchlist consists of the nation’s top 50 players who are selected
based on their performances last season and expectations heading into the 2009-10
campaign. The list will be narrowed down to 30 players in February and four finalists in
March. In addition to making the list, Harangody is also nominated for the 2009-10 Lowe’s
Senior CLASS Award.
Like Father, Like Son
The addition of Evan Gordon to the Flames’ roster this season makes him the program’s first second-generation player. Evan’s father, Eric Gordon, Sr., suited up for the
Flames from 1981-1984. The three-year letterwinner is currently No. 16 on Liberty’s all
time scoring list with 1,154 points.
While Gordon is the first second-generation Flame, he is not the first player whose
father is also in the Liberty men’s basketball annals. Mark Manley, who played three seasons with the Flames between 1998 and 2002 is the son of Dan Manley, the program’s
first head coach (1973-77).

The Flames (0-1) jumped out to quick 6-0 lead
thanks to back-to-back treys from senior forward
Kyle Ohman. Following a George Mason basket, the
Mechanicsburg, Pa., native tallied two more points
to maintain the six-point cushion at 16:12 in the first
half. The Patriots soon erased the deficit, racking up
five quick points off a three-point play and a steal
to cut Liberty’s lead to one. An Ohman free throw
gave the Flames a 9-7 advantage at 15:35, but the
Flames’ lead would end when Patriots guard Cam
Long hit a three-pointer to put George Mason up
10-9 at 14:25. The Patriots gradually extended their
lead over the course of the half’s remaining 14 minutes. The largest Mason lead occurred at 3:33, as
the Flames trailed the home team 35-20. Guards
Jesse Sanders and Jeremy Anderson provided the
Flames with scoring, posting a quick layup and threepointer to cut the deficit to 10, 35-25, with 2:39 left
on the clock. George Mason would answer with a
trey of its own followed by a dunk, going back up by
15. Freshman guard Chris Perez put up a layup at
0:55 making it 40-27 at halftime. At the start of the
second half, Sanders made the first strike, posting
a jumper to cut the Patriots’ lead to 11. George Mason then began gradually increasing its advantage
over the Flames just as it did in the first half. A free
throw at 14:19 would give the Patriots’ their largest
lead of the contest, holding a 53-34 advantage over
the Flames. Liberty received another scoring punch
from Sanders less than a minute later, as the guard
nailed a trey and a layup to trim the deficit to 14. Both
teams would trade baskets the next four minutes.
The Flames began chipping away at the George Mason lead as Ohman recorded a layup to give Liberty
a spark, making it 62-50 with 8:04 remaining. The
deficit was cut to seven points three minutes later
thanks to a trey from freshman guard Evan Gordon,
trimming the Patriots lead to seven points, 64-57, at
6:07. Liberty would later come within three points
of the Patriots at 2:31 off two free throws from red
shirt freshman Carter McMasters, 68-65. Both teams
traded baskets down the stretch, with George Mason
extending its lead to seven off free throws at 0:07.
Guard David Minaya closed out the game with a
three-pointer for Liberty, but George Mason was able
to escape with their 17th-straight home victory.

Game 2
Lynchburg, Va.
The Knights struck early with a three-pointer from
guard Bryce Pendleton, tacking on a layup and a
second trey to take an early 8-0 lead at 16:50. Kyle
Ohman then answered by scoring the Flames’ first
points six points for the second-straight game to
spark Liberty’s offensive attack. At 12:41, Carter McMasters knotted the game at eight with a baseline
jumper. Following a Knights’ basket, freshman Evan
Gordon made a layup to kick start a 15-0 Flames run.
Pendleton ended Liberty’s run with a trey, making it,
25-13, at 5:37. The Flames added six more points,
before the Knights answered with one at the foul
line. After a layup from point guard Jesse Sanders,
freshman guard Chris Perez made his mark with twostraight baskets to give Liberty a 37-14 advantage
with 2:52 remaining in the half. Southern Virginia
stopped the 6-0 spurt with a layup a minute later.
Patrick Konan scored the first points of his collegiate
career, hitting a layup at 1:29 to give the Flames a
23-point margin. The Knights concluded the 20-minute period with a three-pointer by Derek Cutler, making it 39-19 Liberty at halftime. In the second half,
forward Tyler Baker racked up six-straight points in
the first two and a half minutes to extend Liberty’s
advantage. Liberty managed to hold the Knights
scoreless for nearly three minutes of play, before
Southern Virginia’s Cory Evans nailed a jumper at
17:19, to make it 45-21. A minute later, David Minaya
electrified the Vines Center crowd with a two-handed
jam, finishing off a layup attempt from Gordon. Both
teams traded baskets over the next five and a half
minutes, with Liberty holding a 53-33 lead over the
Knights at 10:55. The Flames began to distance
themselves further from the Knights in the contest’s
final 10 minutes. With 8:26 remaining, Gordon faked
out his defender with a spin move en route to a layup
to increase Liberty’s bulge to 65-40. The fast breaks
began for Flames with under eight minutes left, when
Perez found Minaya for a quick dunk. Perez found
himself on the opposite end of a one-two scoring
punch soon after, when Baker dished it to him for
a layup to give the Flames a 29-point advantage at
7:16. Liberty went on to outscore the Knights 20-
13 over the final seven minutes to capture their
first win of the 2009-10 season, 89-53.

The Tigers began their offensive attack early, off
a three-pointer from David Potter. Turnovers and
solid defensive pressure from Clemson stifled the
Flames in the opening minutes, while the visiting
squad managed to pull out to a 6-0 lead at 15:58.
Tyler Baker tallied Liberty’s first point 30 seconds
later, going one-for-two at the foul line. Clemson
responded by going on another 11-0 tear, making it
17-1 at 13:12, which forced Liberty to call a timeout.
Following the stoppage, Jesse Sanders raced down
the court and laid it in for Liberty’s first field goal of
the contest. After a Clemson basket, Kyle Ohman
sank two free throws to cut the deficit back to 14.
The Flames received quality minutes from Patrick
Konan, as he posted a layup with 11:03 left in the half
and later found Carter McMasters alone underneath
the basket for a two-handed jam. Clemson created
a fast break opportunity at 9:42 when Andre Young
snatched a pass from Sanders and dished it to Trevor Booker for a quick dunk. Shortly after stepping
onto the court, Johnny Stephene drained a baseline
jumper just before the shot clock sounded to make it
32-13 at 6:26. Sanders followed up the Florida native’s effort with a layup to give Liberty two-straight
baskets, but Clemson answered the brief burst with
another 9-0 run. Minaya ended the Tigers’ scoring
streak at 1:35 with a layup. Minaya’s teammate and
fellow Oldsmar Christian alum Chris Perez chipped
in another hoop less than a half-minute later to give
Liberty a first half total of 19. Booker then tacked on
one more point at the foul line for a 42-19 Clemson
lead at halftime. Liberty came out in the second half
immediately applying defensive pressure. However,
the Tigers managed to pick up where they left off,
posting six unanswered points. Baker ended the run,
shooting a trey to make it 48-22 at 17:03. Booker
countered by tallying five points off back-to-back
long-range jumpers. After two made free throws from
Konan, both teams went scoreless for the next three
and a half minutes, until Potter ended the drought
with his fifth three-pointer of the contest to give the
Tigers a 56-24 lead with 12:18 remaining. Clemson
then tacked on a made free throw to extend its lead
to 33. Less than a minute later, Stephene capitalized
on an old-fashioned three-point play to cut it back to
30. With the offensive pace slowing on both sides,
the Tigers managed to distance themselves further
from the Flames, forcing turnovers and hitting outside shots, outscoring Liberty 22-12 in the last 11
minutes. Liberty ultimately fell to the No. 22 team in
the country, 79-39.
Game 4
Lynchburg, Va.
The Monarchs looked to run early, lighting up the
scoreboard with a layup in just 13 seconds of
the opening. A scoring lull ensued over the next
two minutes, until Old Dominion’s Ben Finney
drained a shot from outside the three-point arc.
The Flames quickly answered with a stick back
from Patrick Konan. The basket by the freshman, who got his first career start on the night,
trimmed the lead to three, 5-2, at the 17:16
mark. Konan then made his presence known
again 28 seconds later, picking the pocket of
Darius James, which resulted in a jumper from
David Minaya. The Monarchs responded by going on an 11-0 run, to take a 16-4 advantage at
13:20. Ohman ended the streak, hitting a jump
shot to cut the deficit to 10, 16-6, less than a
minute later. Turnovers became a factor as the
Monarchs capitalized on Liberty’s miscues to
go on another 13-0 run. Ohman came through
for the Flames once again with an old-fashion
three-point play, trimming the Monarch’s lead
to 20, 29-9, with 4:28 remaining. The Monarchs
pace slowed in the closing minutes of the period,
as the two Commonwealth teams headed into
the locker room with the halftime score favoring
the visitors 35-14. The Monarchs extended their
margin in the second half with 10-unanswered
points. Minaya netted the first basket for the
Flames during the second half, making it 45-16
in favor of Old Dominion at 15:31. Old Dominion then posted six-straight points to extend its
lead to 35. The Monarchs led by as much 36,
but Liberty would find its range, trading baskets
with Monarchs down the stretch. Old Dominion
would go on to take the contest 73-41, handing
the Flames their second-straight home loss and
the third on the season.
