Choosing The Right Material
The designer must first consider the question of what the product is before he or she
looks for a material. The designer needs to be informed of the product’s physical
characteristics and chemical properties :

Is it powder, liquid, paste or solid?

Is it abrasive, fragile, or heavy?

How big is it?

Does it need protection against water, oxygen, light or heat?

Is it corrosive?

Does it smell?

Does it taint easily – that is, does it need protection against
outside contaminants?
A through undestanding of the product and its protective needs often points directly to
the type of packaging material required, especially when the designer has expert
assistance from the packaging material manufacturer. Another consideration is the
nature of the pack’s outher packaging: for example, will it be carton or tub?
