DISCUSSION
(Community Meeting convened immediately following the 11:30am
Networking Session.)
Del opened the meeting around 11:58am by welcoming everyone and
announcing that he would be leaving shortly to attend the Partnership for
Pluralism event, which was being held at the same time as the AFSA
Community Meeting, and that he would be turning the floor over to VP
Candice Baldwin to convene the meeting. Applause followed.
Candi thanked everyone who contributed to AFSA via ROAR. The amount
raised that day was close to $2,000. She looks forward to even a better year
next year, doubling the efforts. Applause followed.
Venessa also applauded those who contributed to AFSA via ROAR.
Including pledges and the matches, the AFSA treasure will amount to
closely $5000. Among other things, this financial support will help to
strengthen AFSA financially and carrying out CASE (AFSA Strategic Plan).
Venessa encouraged all to keep up the great work and she looks forward to
next year being even better. Applause followed.
Candice provided a brief overview of CASE and opened the floor for
additional comments and questions. After opening the floor for discussion,
she has asked for a motion to adopt the AFSA CASE Strategic Map as
outlined by the AFSA E-Board. RESOLUTION: It was moved by Sarah
Sarchet and seconded by Joe Williams to approve CASE. Motion carried
unanimously.
Communication (Stephanie Paredes)
Reminder to sign the sign-in sheet, which among other things, ensures that
members are on the mailing list and receive Outlook meeting invites. The EBoard is exploring the possibility of using Constant Contact, a selfsustaining database program, for its distribution list---more to follow. In the
meantime, potential members should use the current opt-in feature, which
his included in AFSA correspondence. The AFSA website is in place but is
being revised. Plans are post minutes, opt-in link, updates and other
pertinent information. AFSA members should send weekly announcements,
send to Stephanie by Wednesday, which will avoid unnecessary
“spamming.” List of meetings will be distributed in the near future.

NATIVE AMERICAN MONTH IS NOVEMBER—events are planned—
more to follow.
MARTIN LUTHER KING’S DAY OF EXPRESSION—January 30, 2014,
12:00-2:00pm, Gordon Field House--Keynote speaker Tavis Smiley. That
evening, 6:00-8:00pm, will feature State of Race at East High School.
Signed Language interpreting will be provided--more to follow.
GOSPEL FEST—January 31, 2014--will feature a play—more to follow.

Advocacy (Candice)
Del and Candice have a meeting scheduled with Candi Boston and other of
leaders of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) to discuss, among
other things, opportunities for collaboration with AFSA.
Additional meetings are planned/already scheduled with Dean dt ogilvie,
(Saunders College of Business), Dean James Winebrake (College of Liberal
Arts) and Dean Sophia Maggelakis (College of Science)
In addition, a meeting is scheduled with the Kevin McDonald, VP and
Associate Provost for Diversity and Inclusion to develop a confidential,
anonymous database where anyone can register a concern and create a
process for addressing those concerns.
Service (Natasha Rogers-Dailey, Asst. Treasurer)
PILLARS OF HOPE (POH)—Kick-off meeting was on October 15.
Introductory session with City School #3 youths was held October 22. The
next meeting is scheduled for November 19 in the 2255 J. Gleason Hall
Building 9. This initiative, among other things, focuses on leadership skills
and time management. AFSA members were urged to get involved. For
more information, contact Venessa Mitchell.
UNITED WAY DAY OF CARING—May 8, 2014—plans are to maximize
attendance—location has not been determined but is based on the number of
participants—AFSA members were urged to get involved so that RIT is well
represented--more to follow.
Engagement (Jonathan Ntheketha, AFSA Member-At-Large/Membership)
Jonathan again shared his excitement in serving the AFSA Community in
particular with regard to Engagement, and commended AFSA organization
for its commitment and dedication for the years.

MOCHA (Men of Color, Honor and Ambition)—Reminder—this program
provides, among other things, leadership development, mentoring and
networking for young men of color, and is very similar to the POH.
Jonathan urged AFSA to get involved with MOCHA.
AFSA PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT—For suggested AFSA
professional development opportunities, contact Jonathan or Stephanie.

FUTURE FACULTY CAREER EXPLORATION PROGRAM—Thanks to
the leadership of Renee Baker, Executive Director Of Faculty Recruitment
& Retention, the program recently celebrated its 10th Anniversary in
September.

Save-the-Dates

AFSA COMMUNITY MEETINGS are more than just “food and drink” and
networking. First and foremost, it’s the combined efforts of all AFSA
members to carry out CASE. Among other things, efforts will be set forth to
reconnect with Alumni as well as actively promote, attend, and support other
campus activities as feasible so contact please Jonathan or Candi, so they
can help make the AFSA community aware of the events.
ELECTION DAY, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5 (Mia Hodgins) Reminder
for everyone to go out at vote for their candidates of choice. (Mia is a
candidate for the Rochester City School Board, which is just one of elections
taking place.)
NOVEMBER IS NATIVE AMERICAN MONTH (Nicole Scott, Future
Stewards Program)—Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address, Tuesday,
November 5, 6:30-8:30pm, in Ingle Auditorium--Tadodaho Sidney Hill,
keynote speaker. Contact Nicole for more details.
AFSA Holiday Party (Natasha Rogers-Dailey) Reminder: Friday December
13, 4:00pm, at Crossroads—details to follow.
NTID DIVERSITY GROUP (NDG)--Alex Jones, Chair, thanked
Thomastine and Sarah for interpreting for him and applauded AFSA for its
ongoing efforts related to diversity. He provided and overview of NDG,
which started back in 2011. NDG will be meeting with RIT/NTID
leadership on November 13, has developed a database and looks forward to
the continued collaboration with AFSA.
COMMUNITY PEACE—(Thomas Warfield, NTID Faculty) Evening of
February 2 at Hochstein’s—more details to follow. This community event
will feature music and poetry performances from the Rochester community.
Among other things, it will provide opportunities to connect and participate
with diverse cultures/groups. The main focus is to set forth efforts to
address Rochester poverty.
